In the wake of the Egyptian revolution, the role of the youth and their sense of belonging, the level of their understanding and responsibility have all been reevaluated in the society at large. It was a general belief that the youth were disconnected from the surrounding political events, their living environment, their history and any consideration of the future. The revolution challenged many of these convictions and this resonated in educational institutions. This paper presents a design studio experiment where students were given an area at the heart of the city, which carries historical significance, both in terms of events and its built environment. The area witnessed drastic change over the years, transforming it from elegance to chaos, where listed buildings have come to decay, occupied by ill uses. The area rarely attracts the youth who instead are attracted to emerging hubs in the city. The paper explores an important pedagogical query; the capacity of the design studio to reinforce issues of identity, sense of ownership and belonging. It also raises questions of the role of the teaching staff in fostering cultural responsibility. Literature strongly recommends relating academic scope to the students’ surroundings and environment and for topics to be discussed in an integrated manner. It also suggests that the studio offers the ideal setting for integrating knowledge; where synthesis and application, reflection and action take place and where a student’s architectural identities develop. Less is mentioned in literature of a student’s cultural identity and sense of belonging. Through a project in 2012, the students were divided into groups tackling four main aspects for a given location (the social, economic, physical and environmental aspects), then discussed and debated among themselves, facilitated by the tutors, in an active learning environment. Students collected their data using surveys, interviews, observations and document analysis which informed their design of a master plan and single buildings in the area. A critical pedagogy was adopted in the studio, encouraging students to think critically about the area reflecting on experiences and social contexts in which they are embedded. The studio experience was assessed using focus groups, interviews and individual project content analysis at two stages over the students’ final year. Assessing the learning experience over a long term, clarified the changes that occurred to the students’ vision towards the issues and problems that their design projects dealt with as well as their affiliation with the historic area. Results have implications both to the quest of identity and to the methods used to support a critical pedagogy.

This paper reports on a pilot project in which two postgraduate students were supported to function in the role of teaching assistants (TAs) as part of their learning experience. The project embraced the notion of students as producers rather than consumers. Using a reflective approach, this case study was jointly written by TAs and their teaching staff. It incorporates feedback from other students collected through an anonymous module feedback survey, which was analysed by attribution to themes. The role of TAs benefitted others students, staff, and the TAs; the project is a strong affirmation of the principle of treating students as producers. The impact of the role on both the students undertaking the TA role and the tutors was profound, and student experience was enhanced as a result. TAs can assist in bridging student-teacher communication gaps and support students’ learning through sharing their knowledge by creating resources. This article is written from the perspectives of both the TAs and the tutors.

Associations between the urban living environment and mental health are becoming increasingly apparent. People who live in the city often have increased pre-existing risk factors for mental illness. However, intrinsic features of the city’s built environment can further exacerbate people’s risk of mental ill health. Cities can increase people’s exposure to socio-economic disparities and discrimination, deliver sensory input overload, and erode many of the protective factors that are associated with maintaining good mental health. Cities have not yet fully explored and leveraged the role of urban planners and designers in promoting and supporting public mental health. However, opportunities abound. Urban mental health may be improved by designing cities to provide residents with regular access to green space, integrating physical activity opportunities, facilitating positive, natural social interactions, and fostering feelings of safety. Integrating pro-mental-health design features into urban guidelines and recommendations can contribute to public mental health promotion and strengthen cities.

The book aims to identify the prevalent characteristics of the Tuscan landscape in the fourteenth century through the artistic and literary expressions of two of the main protagonists of the century, Giotto and Boccaccio. Emerging from a critical reading of the Decameron by Boccaccio and the paintings by Giotto is the relationship between fourteenth-century man and nature: having overcome the fear of existence, man is aware of the territory/landscape and his capacity of control over nature. This emerges in the relationship between the city and the landscape outside the walls, in the two artists' careful observation of nature, in the sense of belonging to places, in the role of open spaces, in the conditions of well-being of the environment, in the sense of protection and security; and it is also highlighted in the characteristics of the landscape, such as the sense of proximity, distance, time and aesthetics, in relation above all to gardens and the countryside. From the studies performed there emerges a curiosity that was not yet capable of expressing itself in autonomous forms, but was already appreciable in the innovative techniques heralding the next century.

In addition there is still an understanding that fathers must be given the highest priority in any case, including in terms of eating compared to other family members. The findings show that they live in  dirty living environment with poor sanitation and inadequate clean water sources. Furthermore, this research study finds that the community assistants, including Social Worker, have not played their role adequately. The most striking obstacles faced are economic factors, accessibility and knowledge as well as lack of awareness from families in overcoming the problem of malnutrition in children under five in fishing families Abstrak.

ABSTRACTIn this article, we present an innovation project involving more than 200 teachers in Infant, Primary and Secondary Education at schools in the Republic of El Salvador, which caused strategies and instruments to be reflected upon, trained and designed, and integrated projects to be set in motion. This innovative initiative promoted a change in the role of teachers toward a function as mediator, and the role of students, transforming them into active researchers and protagonists of their learning process. Similarly, the innovative action boosted participants’ social commitment to bringing about a transformation in the relevant contexts. Aware that the key to changing the educational model are teaching staff in a mediator or learning facilitator role, a process was implemented in which teachers were given advisory and monitoring support in each of its phases. The process was based on analysis and self-reflection on the teacher’s working method, taking into account the specific requirements in each different context and students’ interests and motivations. The results showed satisfaction on behalf of the teachers, and a student body engaged in their own learning process and social contexts. Contacto principal: [email protected]
