Geothermal drives Kenya power sector boost

Subject Kenya power outlook. Significance The government's geothermal generation programme is driving a structural change in the power sector. Plans are for electricity generation to roughly double to 3,000 megawatts (MW) over the next few years, with hydroelectricity losing its dominant role. Kenya's medium-term economic growth prospects turn on the success of the government's rising spending on infrastructure investment in the energy and transport sectors. Impacts Focus on industry sources (diesal, gas, coal) obscures the dominant role of bio-energy (firewood, charcoal) in the energy mix. Increasing the role for natural gas in domestic power sectors will be pushed by regional governments with new offshore finds. Policymakers will continue to advocate the efficacy of mini grid or off-grid systems to augment the limited reach of 'national' grids.

Significance The economic and political impacts from the Odebrecht bribery scandal are beginning to make themselves felt. As well as hitting President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski’s popularity rating, the scandal has further reinforced public distrust in the country’s ruling elites. It is also negatively affecting this year’s growth prospects. Impacts Odebrecht and other Brazilian construction companies will find themselves excluded in Peru, opening opportunities for others. The bribery upset will lead to a slowdown in infrastructure investment in the short-to-medium term. There may have to be a major shake-up in the workings of agencies that oversee public investment bidding.

Subject Tanzania power sector outlook. Significance Basic development initiatives, including improved access to electricity, are vital for Tanzania's economic growth and poverty reduction goals. The pace and capacity of power-generating projects will largely determine the country's medium-term growth prospects. Impacts Tanzania's gas and coal reserves could provide quick sources of power but will raise environmental concern. Negotiations and disputes with current private-sector partners will provide insights into the future business climate. Innovations in off-grid options for power will provide opportunities for firms in rural areas if prices and access are viable.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the crowding-in or crowding-out relationship between public and private investment in India. Design/methodology/approach The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach is used to estimate the long run relationship between public and private investment using annual data from 1971-1972 to 2009-2010. Findings Based on the empirical findings, it is observed that aggregate public investment has a positive effect on private investment both in the long run and the short run. In contrast to the findings of previous studies, no significant impact of public infrastructure investment on private investments is found in the long run, while non-infrastructure investment has a positive impact on private investment in the short run. Among the various categories of infrastructure sector, a positive and significant impact in the case of electricity, gas and water supply is observed. Similarly, the result indicates that public investment in machinery and equipment and construction have substantially influenced the private sector machinery and equipment in the long run and the short run. In the case of the role of macroeconomic uncertainty, the results find a negative and significant impact on private investment and the impact is higher in the short run than in the long run. Originality/value The present study extends the literature in three important ways: First, the study attempts to capture heterogeneity of public investment as well as disaggregate effects of two different categories of public infrastructure on private investment. The extent to which two different types of public assets impact the private investment in machinery and equipment investment is also examined. Second, ARDL model is used to examine the long-run relationship between public and private investment. Third, the study incorporates macroeconomic uncertainty into the empirical analysis to examine the role of macroeconomic volatility in determining private investment decision.

Significance President Andry Rajoelina's new political platform, Isika rehetra miaraka amin'i Andry Rajoelina (IRD), is fielding candidates across all 119 districts, while presidential runner-up Marc Ravalomanana has 109 candidates running under his Tiako I Madagasikara (TIM) party. The bulk of the candidates, 515 in total, are running as independents. Impacts A failure by Rajoelina to pass a law on the recovery of illicit assets could strain international relations. A large independent contingent in parliament would make it difficult for Rajoelina to secure a stable majority. Reforming water and power utility Jirama over the short-to-medium term could have a major bearing on future growth prospects.

Purpose The dominant role of the employer regarding the access and use of healthcare services by migrant domestic helpers (MDH) often has a negative impact on healthcare provision for migrants in Cyprus. Research relating to the perceptions of MDH employers remains scarce. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of employers on the access and use of healthcare services by their MDH. Design/methodology/approach Three studies were carried out using semi-structured interviews with MDH (n=13) and employers of MDH (n=12) and structured questionnaires with MDH (n=625). Content analysis for qualitative findings was carried out using QSR Nvivo 10 and for quantitative using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 17. Findings Findings provide information about migrant health needs from different views leading to improved documentation via multiple triangulation. Employers play a key gatekeeping role but are not in position to provide sufficient information and guidance to their MDH. MDH reported a need for health services which was not met (18 percent), attributing this to their employers not granting them permission. Originality/value The role of the employer is critical and has an impact on the quality of care provided to this migrant group. The involvement of the employer in MDH health matters functions as a barrier. A significant gap exists between employers and MDH regarding the health needs of the latter.

PurposeThis paper draws on the conservation of resources (COR) theory to understand how organizational embeddedness develops through psychological ownership and organizational justice. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of three dimensions of organizational justice on organizational embeddedness and psychological ownership and the effect of psychological ownership on organizational embeddedness. The mediating role of psychological ownership between organizational justice and organizational embeddedness was also examined.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 300 engineers in Pakistan's power sector using a three-wave quantitative survey. Partial least squares path modeling was used to analyze the data.FindingsThe results show that distributive and procedural justice results in the development of organizational embeddedness. Simultaneously, psychological ownership mediates the link between all three dimensions of organizational justice and organizational embeddedness.Practical implicationsBy highlighting the importance of organizational justice and psychological ownership, this study offers managers with two distinct strategies for enhancing their employees' organizational embeddedness.Originality/valueThere is a lack of research investigating the distinct effects of three dimensions of organizational justice on the three dimensions of organizational embeddedness. Further, research to investigate the intervening mechanisms that connect organizational justice and embeddedness is scarce. Finally, the COR theory has been utilized to explain how embeddedness works. However, it had not been utilized previously to understand the process through which embeddedness is accumulated. This study fills these gaps by examining the distinct effects of three dimensions of organizational justice on three dimensions of organizational embeddedness and examining these relationships' mediation through psychological ownership.

✓ Spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) was measured over a wide range of artificially varied mean systemic arterial blood pressures (MAP) in a group of monkeys with alpha adrenergic receptors blocked by the intravenous administration of phenoxybenzamine (Dibenzyline). The SCBF was found to vary linearly with changes in MAP. Autoregulation appeared to have been abolished. These data are cited as evidence for a dominant role of the sympathetic nervous system in control of the spinal circulation.

Significance The new forecast is based on strong results in the second quarter, better-than-expected tourism revenues over the summer months and the approval of the Greek Recovery and Resilience Plan by the European Commission in July. Mitsotakis also announced several new measures, including tax cuts to stimulate spending. Impacts High unemployment (14.2% of the labour force) and structural labour market weaknesses will constrain growth. Structural reforms lost momentum during the pandemic, dampening medium-term economic growth prospects. Public opposition to vaccination might necessitate new movement restrictions by year-end, inhibiting growth. Availability of a EUR30bn liquidity buffer will support sovereign ratings and investor interest in the short term. Short- and medium-term public debt refinancing risks remain low as 75% of debt stock is held by the official sector.

Subject Russia's arms industry. Significance Russia's defence industry plays a dominant role in the economy, and its status has been enhanced by operations in Syria seen as a political as well as military triumph. Foreign policy and arms exports are closely interlinked. As energy revenues fall, arms sales are becoming a key income source for the state. The industry is particularly unsuited to play its assigned role of economic driving force due to over-consolidation, inefficiencies and politics. Impacts Russia will use arms sales to cement alliances, and vice versa. Continual delays and cost overruns are likely, especially for equipment based on new technologies. Monopolistic structures will slow innovation.

Subject Prospects for the global economy in 2016. Significance Adverse trends visible across many regions at end-2015 suggest that global growth will stay subdued in 2016. Leading international institutions forecast an upturn in activity, but also emphasise obstacles and risks ahead. They encourage efforts to support growth prospects. However, little has been done so far regarding infrastructure investment, structural reforms and other pro-growth policies except for the ECB considering a boost to its quantitative easing (QE) programme.
