A recent stream of research has focused on tax aggressiveness, the downward management of taxable income through tax planning activities, and has analyzed its antecedents and consequences, mainly on public companies. Only very few studies, however, have been carried out in the context of private family business and have investigated whether some family firms are more tax aggressive than others, considering some specific features of family firms, such as their distinctive agency conflicts and socioemotional wealth. In this paper, we investigate the antecedents of tax aggressiveness in a sample of private Italian family firms. Our research findings show that tax aggressiveness is positively associated with ownership concentration, the presence of independent members in the board, and the adoption of reporting mechanisms. Instead, we found a negative relation between tax aggressiveness and the use of both strategic planning and a combination of managerial control systems (both planning and reporting mechanisms). We did not find any relation between family CEO and tax aggressiveness. In summary, overall, our findings show that family involvement in ownership, an independent board. and managerialization (the use of managerial mechanisms) are relevant antecedents of tax aggressiveness in private family businesses.

In this paper, a modular dynamic model of an industrial robot (IR) for predicting and analyzing its energy consumption is developed. The model consists of control systems, which include a state-of-the-art feedback linearization controller, permanent magnet synchronous drives and the mechanical structure with Coulomb friction and linear damping. By using the developed model, a detailed analysis of the influence of different parameter sets on the energy consumption and loss energy of IRs is investigated. The investigation results show that the operating parameters, robot motor drives, and mechanical damping and elasticity of robot transmissions have a significant effect on the energy consumption and accuracy of IRs. However, these parameters are not independent, but rather interrelated. For example, a higher acceleration and velocity shortens IRs’ operating periods, but needs a greater motor current, tends to excite vibrations to a greater extent, and thus produces a higher amount of loss energy.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to explore Crowdfunding as a new form of Open Innovation for SMEs and family business in the Agri-Food sector which usually do not have the same skills and tools to operate with conventional own Crowdsourcing methods. The study first has analyzed the principal literature and data available on Crowdfunding and the Food industry in order to describe the state of the art in this subject. Afterwards the focus of the paper goes to the analysis of the Italian case. The study used a deep qualitative approach because of an important lack of data and information on this subject. Nine depth interviews to key informants of the sector have been carried out investigating the market players, the normative regulations, the businesses models and the evolution of Crowdfunding for the Agri-Food industry in Italy. The research finds that Crowdfunding for Agri-Food industry can be important for both its profitability and the development of the sector, but that nowadays the Italian market is still in its primordial phase. Crowdfunding is very suitable for SMEs business which represents the vast majority of the Agri-Food Italian market and the use of this instrument could be beneficial for it.

This article focuses on the launch of Sputnik that transfixed the world by Carpenter Technology Corp. By incorporating advanced processing equipment, including a rolling mill, shape controller, annealing furnaces, wet grinders, and leveler with state-of-the-art automated control systems, Carpenter has improved the productivity and quality of its high value strip at a time when Space Shuttle launchings are taken in stride. The Carpenter specialty strip facility installed a cold rolling mill designed by Joseph Frohling GmbH of Olpe, Germany, in November last year, to increase rolling capacity and guarantee that the steel strip it produces meets the desired shape and thickness. In the Frohling mill, strip passes between two working rolls that reduce its thickness to sizes between 0.150 and 0.008 inch, at speeds up to 1500 feet per minute. Carpenter also installed three Ebner vertical annealing furnaces. Coiled strip on mandrels is unwound through each furnace, annealed, then rewound continuously to promote productivity.

Abstract With the well-known Transonic Compressor Darmstadt (TCD) in operation since 1994, profound knowledge in designing and operating a sophisticated test-rig is available at the Institute of Gas Turbines and Aerospace Propulsion of TU Darmstadt. During this period, TCD has been subject to a vast number of redesigns within different measurement campaigns (see [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]). To expand the capabilities and ensure a sustainable process of compressor research, a new test facility was designed and built by the institute. The new test rig Transonic Compressor Darmstadt 2 (TCD2) features increased power for higher pressure ratios and higher mass-flow, a state of the art control system, increased flexibility towards different compressor geometries and modern data acquisition hardware and software. Following the successful commissioning of the test-rig in March 2018, a first measurement campaign has been conducted. Early test results regarding aerodynamic performance and aeroelastic effects of the test compressor are presented together with a detailed overview of test-rig infrastructure and control systems as well as the test compressor and the measurement hardware.
