The present paper is a contribution to the building blocks of an investmentmodel within the framework of an integrated macroeconomic model of anIslamic economy. Investment behavior in the model is guided by an Islamicethicalvalue system and profit-sharing financial contracts. The typical firm’sinvestment decision is believed to emerge from a dynamic inter-temporalmaximization exercise within an infinite time horizon. The method of Calculusof Variations is applied to arrive at the optimal investment and employmentcriteria for the firm. The result is then incorporated into a macroeconomicmodel to study the behavior of key endogenous variables like national incomeand the rate of profit-share. This work presents an extensive analysis of the properties of distributed vibration absorbers (DVAs) and their effectiveness in controlling the sound radiation from the base structure. The DVA acts as a distributed mass absorber consisting of a thin metal sheet covering a layer of acoustic foam (porous media) that behaves like a distributed spring-mass-damper system. To assess the effectiveness of these DVAs in controlling the vibration of the base structures (plate) a detailed finite elements model has been developed for the DVA and base plate structure. The foam was modeled as a poroelastic media using 8 node hexahedral elements. The structural (plate) domain was modeled using 16 degree of freedom plate elements. Each of the finite element models have been validated by comparing the numerical results with the available analytical and experimental results. These component models were combined to model the DVA. Preliminary experiments conducted on the DVAs have shown an excellent agreement between the results obtained from the numerical model of the DVA and from the experiments. The component models and the DVA model were then combined into a larger FE model comprised of a base plate with the DVA treatment on its surface. The results from the simulation of this numerical model have shown that there has been a significant reduction in the vibration levels of the base plate due to DVA treatment on it. It has been shown from this work that the inclusion of the DVAs on the base plate reduces their vibration response and therefore the radiated noise. Moreover, the detailed development of the finite element model for the foam has provided us with the capability to analyze the physics behind the behavior of the distributed vibration absorbers (DVAs) and to develop more optimized designs for the same.

AbstractAn ensemble Kalman filter reanalysis has been archived in the Research Data Archive at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. It used a CAM6 configuration of the Community Earth System Model (CESM), several million observations per day, and the Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART). The data saved from this global, $$\sim 1^\circ $$ ∼ 1 ∘ resolution, 80 member ensemble span 2011–2019. They include ensembles of: sub-daily, real world, atmospheric forcing for use by all of the nonatmospheric models of CESM; weekly, CAM6, restart file sets; 6 hourly, prior hindcast estimates of the assimilated observations; 6 hourly, land model, plant growth variables, and 6 hourly, ensemble mean, gridded, atmospheric analyses. This data can be used for hindcast studies and data assimilation using component models of CESM; CAM6, CLM5, CICE5, POP2. MOM6, MOSART, and CISM; and non-CESM Earth system models. This large dataset (~ 120 Tb) has a unique combination of a large ensemble, high frequency, and multiyear time span, which provides opportunities for robust statistical analysis and use as a machine learning training dataset.

Background: Hate crimes against Muslim Americans have increased exponentially in the past 20 years, but there is currently no scale for measuring perceived anti-Muslim discrimination in the United States. To fill this gap, this study used a mixed-method approach to develop scales for measuring perceived anti-Muslim discrimination. Method: Qualitative data informed the development and validation of the 19-item Societal Anti-Muslim Discrimination Index and the 9-item Interpersonal Anti-Muslim Discrimination Index. Quantitative data ( N = 347) were collected from Muslim Americans using an online survey and used to assess the anti-Muslim indexes. Results: Qualitative data contributed to the refinement scale items. Quantitative results indicated one-component models and modest to high reliability of the Interpersonal Anti-Muslim Discrimination Index (.77) and Societal Anti-Muslim Discrimination Index (.88) scales. Discussion: Study results established the validity of these novel scales for measuring the distinct facets of anti-Muslim discrimination not captured by the Everyday Discrimination Index. These scales will facilitate research on anti-Muslim discrimination and the health implications of this form of religious-based discrimination.

AbstractWhile it is typical in the econometric signal extraction literature to assume that the unobserved signal and noise components are uncorrelated, there is nevertheless an interest among econometricians in the hypothesis of hysteresis, i.e. that major movements in the economy are fundamentally linked. While specific models involving correlated signal and noise innovation sequences have been developed and applied using state space methods, there is no systematic treatment of optimal signal extraction with correlated components. This paper provides the mean square error optimal formulas for both finite samples and bi-infinite samples and furthermore relates these filters to the more well-known Wiener–Kolmogorov (WK) and Beveridge–Nelson (BN) signal extraction formulas in the case of ARIMA component models. Then we obtain the result that the optimal filter for correlated components can be viewed as a weighted linear combination of the WK and BN filters. The gain and phase functions of the resulting filters are plotted for some standard cases. Some discussion of estimation of hysteretic models is presented, along with empirical results on an economic time series. Comparisons are made between signal extractions from traditional WK filters and those arising from the hysteretic models.
