BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common structural spine deformity affecting 2%–4% of adolescents. Due to the unknown cause of idiopathic scoliosis, its therapy is a long-term and often unsatisfactory process. In the literature, it is often suggested that problems related to the feeling of one’s own body are caused by AIS. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the feeling of one’s own body among children with and without scoliosis on the example of feeling the head position, pelvis shape and balance. METHOD: The research included 62 children: 30 with scoliosis and 25 without diagnosed scoliosis with an age range between 11 to 19 years. The minimum scoliosis value was 7∘ and the maximum was 53∘. The average value was 25∘. During the study, three functional tests were used: Cervical Joint Position Error Test (CJPET), Clinical Test of Sensory Integration on Balance (CTSIB) and Body proportion demonstration test (BPDT). RESULTS: The results of the tests showed statistically significant differences (CJPET p= 3.54* 10-14, CTSIB p= 0.0376, BPDT p= 0.0127). However, none of the studies showed a correlation between the results of people with scoliosis and the value of their Cobb angles.

Abstract Background Postural instability is a possible symptom in children with otitis media, which often occurs in this population. The child with balance disorders usually has intolerance to sudden movements, difficulties in moving in the dark, nausea, vomiting and numerous fall events. To verify whether changes in the middle ear can influence the balance postural in children from 3 to 5 years. Methods The sample consisted of 31 children of both sexes, aged between 3 and 5 years. To collect data, a tympanogram was used to analyze the integrity of the tympanic membrane and the Modifid Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance (MCTSIB), with four different sensory conditions, to assess static postural balance. Results Regarding the tympanogram, it was verified that the majority of the sample showed no changes, 45.2% of which were type A and 32.3% of type C1. Regarding the type B and C2 tympanogram, it was found that 12.9% of the sample had type B tympanogram and 9.7% type C2. When comparing these values with the MCTSIB results, there were no significant differences between the tympanogram with changes (B and C2) and the tympanogram without changes (A and C1), regarding the child's balance performance. Conclusions In this study, it was concluded that the alterations of the middle ear, proved through the tympanogram, did not influence the postural balance. However, it was found that the unilateral changes reported by the tympanogram, suggest higher values of postural oscillation, compared to bilateral changes.

The authors advocate a modernization of the neurologic exam with regard to the evaluation of static equilibrium through the application of some easily performed and interpreted bedside maneuvers like the Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance - modified and the Functional Reach Test. The authors also believe that these and other assessments, such as that of the risk of falling for elderly patients, should be incorporated into the routine neurological examination.

Abstract Objective The modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction and Balance (mCTSIB) is used to clinically assess vestibular sensory integration (VSI), the process by which the central nervous system integrates vestibular afference to maintain balance. The rate and effects of impaired VSI (IVSI) on prosthetic mobility in people with lower limb amputation (LLA) is unknown. The objective of this study was to use the mCTSIB to classify VSI in active community ambulators with LLA and to examine the relationship between IVSI and prosthetic mobility, as measured by the Component Timed Up and Go (cTUG) test. Methods This was a cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 130 community ambulators with unilateral LLA. Classification of VSI was determined based on a time-based pass/fail mCTSIB performance. Participants were classified as having normal sensory integration (NSI) if they could balance for 30 seconds in every mCTSIB condition. Participants who failed condition 4 exclusively were classified as IVSI. Prosthetic mobility, as measured by the cTUG, was compared between NSI and IVSI groups. Results Of the 130 participants, 29 (22%) were classified as IVSI and 95 (73%) were classified as having NSI. Prosthetic mobility significantly differed between IVSI and NSI groups, with IVSI participants performing all components of the cTUG significantly slower. Medium to large effect sizes were found between groups during cTUG. Conclusions These results suggest that 1 in 5 community ambulators with LLA have IVSI, with associated limitations in balance confidence and prosthetic mobility. Impact The ability to integrate vestibular information was found to have a strong relationship with prosthetic mobility in active community ambulators with LLA, especially with performing a 180-degree step turn. Physical therapists can use the mCTSIB to classify sensory integration during prosthetic rehabilitation and develop an appropriate balance intervention. Lay Summary Active adults with LLA can use information from their senses to maintain their standing balance. Adults with LLA who have difficulty balancing on foam with closed eyes were slower to get in and out of a chair, walk, and perform a 180-degree step turn.

Objective. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of a submaximal level of exercise on balance performance under a variety of conditions.Material and Method. Thirteen community-dwelling older persons with intact foot sensation (age = 66.69 ± 8.17 years, BMI = 24.65 ± 4.08 kg/m2, female,n=6) volunteered to participate. Subjects’ balance performances were measured using the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Integration of Balance (mCTSIB) at baseline and after test, under four conditions of stance: (1) eyes-opened firm-surface (EOF), (2) eyes-closed firm-surface (ECF), (3) eyes-opened soft-surface (EOS), and (4) eyes-closed soft-surface (ECS). The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) protocol was used to induce the submaximal level of exercise. Data was analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test.Results. Balance changes during EOF (z=0.00,P=1.00) and ECF (z=-1.342,P=0.180) were not significant. However, balance changes during EOS (z=-2.314,P=0.021) and ECS (z=-3.089,P=0.02) were significantly dropped after the 6MWT.Conclusion. A submaximal level of exercise may influence sensory integration that in turn affects balance performance, particularly on an unstable surface. Rehabilitation should focus on designing intervention that may improve sensory integration among older individuals with balance deterioration in order to encourage functional activities.

Compromised attentional resources during perceived fatigue has been suggested to alter motor control. The authors determined if measures of postural control and gait are predicted by state and trait physical and mental fatigue and energy, and how these relationships are modified by sex, sleep quality, and physical activity. Young adults (n = 119) completed the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Integration, overground walking, and questionnaires to quantify fatigue and energy, sleep quality, and physical activity. Regression models indicated that trait fatigue, trait energy, and sleep quality were predictors of postural control (p ≤ .02, R2 ≥ .04). State fatigue, state energy, and sex were predictors of gait (p ≤ .05, R2 ≥ .03). While the variance explained was low (3–13%), the results demonstrate perceptions of fatigue and energy may influence posture and gait.

ABSTRACT The balance system requires the interaction of appropriate sensory inputs, a sound processor and coordinated outputs. The human body relies primarily on three important sensory inputs, i.e. somatosensory, visual and vestibular. Not only do these inputs provide vital information as regards body orientation and position but also interact with each other so as to provide a balanced fodder for the central nervous system to process. Situations arise in clinical practice wherein patients lack one or more of these inputs, and need to excessively rely on the others for maintaining balance. Such patients may be able to ordinarily maintain their sense of balance during daily activities, and only when exposed to adverse or stressful situations, do they need to practice caution; and then, there are some who do not even have the luxury of managing their daily activities with ease. It is vital for the therapist to assess and identify the weaknesses of a patient as regards the sensory inputs and help them to capitalise on their strengths. The clinical test for the sensory integration of balance is a simple test that has been devised to easily and rapidly assess the dependence of a patient on various inputs and devise a rehabilitative strategy customized to each patient. The aim of this research was to assess relationships between the level of vocabulary and selected elements of sensory integration and balance in 5-year-old girls and boys, showing the differences between them. The study group consisted of 290 5-year-old children (172 boys and 118 girls) with different levels of vocabulary development and selected disturbances in sensory integration and balance processes. To evaluate the developmental deficits of speech with regard to vocabulary, the Children’s Dictionary Test was used. The Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance was also employed. In our research’s overall assessment, 118 children, i.e., 41%, had a low level of vocabulary, while 108 (37%) had an average level and 64 (22%) had a high level. However, the average score of all examined children (3.71 stens) indicates a low level of vocabulary development. Less developed vocabulary skills included the ability to create subordinate words and define concepts. There were no significant differences in the level of vocabulary between girls and boys. We observed disorders concerning selected elements of sensory integration and balance in most of the children, and more often in boys. There were statistically significant relationships between the level of vocabulary and selected disorders of sensory integration and balance; however, they were not unambiguous. Children with the lowest level of vocabulary in overall assessment obtained significantly the worst results in the Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance (CTSIB) open eyes, hard surface test. However, in the closed eyes, hard surface test, the lowest score was obtained by children with a high overall assessment. In turn, in the open eyes, soft surface test, the lowest score was noted for children with average overall assessment. In the complex CTSIB test, the lowest score was achieved by children with low ability to define concepts. The problem of the relationship between vocabulary level of and sensory integration as well as balance requires further research. The demonstrated significant relationships between some aspects of vocabulary level and selected elements of sensory integration as well as balance confirm the need to care for the overall psychomotor sphere of a child.
