Special economic zones (SEZs) are important in Laos due to their ability to attract foreign investment, realize industrialization, and promote economic globalization. Based on Laos’ SEZs in operation, this study explored land-use intensity, structural evolution and land-use efficiency in Laos’ SEZs via the land-use dynamic degree, information entropy, super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) and gray relational analysis (GRA). The study determined that the total land-use area in Laos’ SEZs continuously increased from 2014 to 2020. The land-use intensity changes in the SEZs can be divided into three types, i.e., high intensity, medium intensity and low intensity, and most SEZs belonged to the medium-intensity type. The proportion of land used in production systems in Laos’ SEZs increased the most, and the proportion of infrastructure land notably decreased. The overall information entropy of the land-use structure exhibited an initial downward and then an upward trend. In 2018, the land-use efficiency in the Savan-Seno SEZ, Vientiane Industrial and Trade Area, Dongphosy SEZ, and Golden Triangle SEZ was relatively optimal. The basic factors of the industrial space and the factors reflecting international cooperation attributes were highly related to the land-use efficiency in Laos’ SEZs.

Cellular automata belong to a family of discrete, connectionist techniques being used to investigate fundamental principles of dynamics, evolution, and self-organization. In this paper, a cellular automaton is developed to model the spatial structure of urban land use over time. For realistic parameter values, the model produces fractal or bifractal land-use structures for the urbanized area and for each individual land-use type. Data for a set of US cities show that they have very similar fractal dimensions. The cellular approach makes it possible to achieve a high level of spatial detail and realism and to link the results directly to general theories of structural evolution.

Family planning has been China’s basic national policy since 1980, but it changed from a one-child policy to a two-child policy at the end of 2015 as which will further stimulate the rapid growth of China’s population and have a profound impact on the population structure and land use in China. Based on the forecast of total population change in national and provincial dimensions after the two -child policy, the paper forecasted the spatial pattern of China's population and provincial differentiation over the next 15 years, and discussed the far-reaching impact on the future urban and rural land use and planning. Conclusions as follows: the two-child policy will achieve rapid population growth in the next 5 years, then there will be a stable growth phase; the peak of China’s population increase will occur in 2030 with a total population of about 1.55 billion people,which will continuethe regional differentiation of urbanization,andurbanization level in southeastern region will remain generally higher than that of the northwest. In addition, population growth brings new demands in urban and rural construction land, therefore, more intensive use of land will be the inevitable choice for the future development for China.

Using information entropy,this paper analyzed the temporal and spatial variation of land use structure in Shandong Province from 2003 to 2008. The results are as follows:The information entropy and equilibrium degree went up and the dominance degree went down year by year. That reflects that the disorder of the land use system was strengthening, while the structure weakening, and that the types of land utilization tended to be equilibrium during the study period.

Chaohu basin is located in the central economic belt, as an important part of the Yangtze River Basin. Based on the data of land use classification from 2000 to 2015, this paper makes a dynamic econometric analysis on the spatial structure of land use in Chaohu basin. The results show that: (1) The agricultural land has been in a downward trend from 2000 to 2015. However, the construction land has been increasing. From 2005 to 2010, the change of agriculture and the construction land have reached the maximum value, which are -0.279% and 1.814%, respectively. (2) During 2000-2015, every five years, the change of land use degree in Chaohu basin is greater than 0. The land use in the study area is in the development period, among which the change of land use from 2000 to 2005 is the largest. (3) The information entropy of land use in Chaohu basin is more than 1, and the change of information entropy is more than 0, which indicates that the information entropy is on the rise and the land use is in disorder. The results are of practical significance to the ecological security and optimal regulation of Chaohu Basin.
