The optimized monitoring system of the Siberian moth Dendrolimus sibiricus Tchetverikov (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) was developed during the implementation of the Forest Resources and Technologies (FOREST) international project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in 2001-2005. It includes successive stages of forest pathology zoning of the subjects of the Russian Federation, individual forestry enterprises, organization of pheromone monitoring of sparse Siberian moth populations and, only when the population growth is recorded by the means of traps (above 100 male moths / trap / season) - transition to caterpillar sampling. In the course of the project, the technology for pheromone monitoring of the pest was developed for the first time (a pheromone analogue was synthesized, a dispenser, trap and fixing insecticidal strip were created, a methodology of accounting and a decision-making algorithm was recommended). The project financed the creation of a three-volume handbook "Diseases and Pests in Russian Forests", subsequently published by the Forestry Agency of Russian Federation. The monitoring system tested and implemented in the course of the project in the Tomsk, Irkutsk, and Sakhalin Districts, Krasnoyarsk, Khabarovsk, Primorskiy krays and the Republic of Buryatia serves as a vivid example of fruitful cooperation between scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences and forestry universities with forestry practitioners.

The technical and the legal aspects of aircraft noise having been adequately covered by others the present paper does not stray unnecessarily into those specialised fields but confines itself largely to the practical aspects of this very wide subject. It examines under six headings what can be done in practice, and covers in some detail what has been done at Heathrow. It describes several of the more interesting arrangements at other international airports, and with reference to the differences between them, poses some questions which must be answered when planning an automatic noise monitoring system. It concludes with reference to some features which, although desirable, may not be practicable for Heathrow. Before talking about what can be done about noise in the vicinity of an airport it is important to emphasise that worthwhile control can be achieved only as a result of co-operation between the civil aviation and airport authorities, the airlines and the pilots. Such co-operation exists at Heathrow but continuous effort is required to keep it effective.

Civil aviation authorities have a requirement for the application of devices which are capable of determining the geometric height of aircraft above flight level 290 with a high degree of precision. These devices, called height monitoring units (HMUS), should pave the way for a safe and expeditious introduction of reduced vertical separation of 1000 ft above flight level 290.In this paper the design philosophy as well as the prototype development of such a device, which is called the dual-synchronized autonomous monitoring system (DAMS), are outlined. This device operates fully independently of any airborne equipment such as secondary surveillance radar transponders. The configuration basically consists of two standard marine radars with both axes of revolution situated in a horizontal plane. With this configuration it is possible to determine the trajectory of an aircraft and, in particular, the geometrical height above ground level within typical radar slant range coverage of some 18 km. The basic application of this equipment will be in the field of height monitoring of aircraft targets in environments with reduced vertical separation standards of 1000 ft above flight level 290, but a wider application of this concept is foreseen for local precision tracking of aircraft targets.

Abstract. The study examined the psychometric properties of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R, UK edition) in a large European sample of civil airline pilots. The NEO PI-R is a comprehensive and robust measure of personality that has been validated across cultures and contexts. Furthermore, the personality profile of the pilot sample was examined and compared to a normative sample representing the UK working population. Data from 591 pilots (95.1% male) were collected. Analyses include the internal reliability and factorial validity (precisely, Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling) to examine the measurement equivalence of the NEO PI-R with reference to UK norms ( N = 1,301). Internal reliability estimates of the NEO PI-R scores were good at the domain level, but generally weak at the facet level. The structural model in the pilot sample was congruent with the general working population sample. Furthermore, there was convincing evidence for a distinct personality profile of civil pilots, although the stability of this profile will require further validation. The NEO PI-R’s validity in the assessment of general personality in civil airline pilots is discussed, along with implications of the results for the utility of personality assessment in civil aviation contexts.
