The optimized monitoring system of the Siberian moth Dendrolimus sibiricus Tchetverikov (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) was developed during the implementation of the Forest Resources and Technologies (FOREST) international project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in 2001-2005. It includes successive stages of forest pathology zoning of the subjects of the Russian Federation, individual forestry enterprises, organization of pheromone monitoring of sparse Siberian moth populations and, only when the population growth is recorded by the means of traps (above 100 male moths / trap / season) - transition to caterpillar sampling. In the course of the project, the technology for pheromone monitoring of the pest was developed for the first time (a pheromone analogue was synthesized, a dispenser, trap and fixing insecticidal strip were created, a methodology of accounting and a decision-making algorithm was recommended). The project financed the creation of a three-volume handbook "Diseases and Pests in Russian Forests", subsequently published by the Forestry Agency of Russian Federation. The monitoring system tested and implemented in the course of the project in the Tomsk, Irkutsk, and Sakhalin Districts, Krasnoyarsk, Khabarovsk, Primorskiy krays and the Republic of Buryatia serves as a vivid example of fruitful cooperation between scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences and forestry universities with forestry practitioners.

The founder of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Tadeusz Stanisław Wróblewski (1858–1925), began to enrich the library of his parents, which he inherited in 1891, through his acquisitions of books, manuscripts, periodicals, collections of iconographic documents, and other valuables. One of such book collections, offered to him for sale in 1907, was from the Pustynia Estate located near the town of Kraslava, then part of the Vitebsk Province (Kraslava now is a municipality center in the Republic of Latvia, situated not far from Daugavpils and near the border with the Russian Federation). This collection belonged to Count Henryk de Broel-Plater (1868–after 1926). Having studied its catalogue, Wroblewski purchased from the count his entire collection (over 6000 volumes) on October 30, 1907, for 2.5 thousand roubles. However, Plater had hid several hundred of his most valuable books, which he later offered to Hieronym Wilder’s antique bookshop in Warsaw. Wroblewski had to exercise a considerable effort to reclaim the books he rightly owned. Based both on archival materials kept in the Wroblewski Library of LAS and on evidence collected about publications carrying the Pustynia Estate provenance mark (350 copies have been identified so far), the article discusses the circumstances of the purchase of Plater’s book collection and overviews its content and development. The Pustynia estate library was rather universal by its content and contained extremely valuable editions. Wroblewski purchased from the count, among other rarities, Joannes Radvanus’s Radivilias (Vilnae, Metropoli Litvanorum: ex officina Ioannis Kartzani, 1592), a Latin biography by the Lutheran pastor Paul Oderborn Ioannis Basilidis magni Moscoviae ducis vita (Witebergae: excudebat haeredes Ioannis Cratonis, 1585), and a treatise on the differences between the Catholic and the Orthodox faiths by the Kraków canon Jan Sakran, Elucidarius errorum ritus Ruthenici (Cracoviae: typis Joannis Haller, post V 1501). There are no more copies of these and several other Plater’ s books in Lithuania.

The subject of this research is museum sources on the religion of Bashkir people. The goal lies in examination of the items of Islam and pre-Islamic beliefs from the ethnographic collections of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography of R. G. Kuzeev Institute of Ethnological Research of the Ufa Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is determined that the Museum stores over 50 items related to religion that were collected in the late XX century in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Kurgan Oblast, and Orenburg Oblast. These Islamic (Sunni Muslims) items are rather associated with the traditions and lifestyle of the Bashkir people: prayer rugs – namazlik, Quran, tasbih, tagiyah, ablution items – kumgan, dress of the Mullah. Prayer rugs are decorated with floral embroidery, with images of mosque, kumgan, crescent moon, and Arabic inscription. The collections also feature the items related to Shia Muslims – a stone used in prayer. Islam first infiltrated Bashkir culture in the X – XI centuries; by the XIII – XIV century it spread significantly; strengthening its positions with each century, it has fully integrated into life of Bashkir population by the end of the XIX century. Despite this fact, certain items pre-Islamic beliefs have retained in everyday life of the Bashkir people: amulets (amulet stones, juniper, feathers of wood grouse, goose down, etc.). Bashkirs were able to synthesize the pre-Islamic and Islamic tradition, which remain existing harmoniously in the territory of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

The article continues the series of publications dedicated to the three-hundredth anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the fruitful cooperation of the Academy with the Free Economic Society of Russia. The article shows the path of A. Storch to an honorary academic title, tells about his multifaceted activities at the Academy. The encyclopedic nature of his knowledge and high moral qualities are noted. It is emphasized that twenty years of activity of the academician as a teacher and mentor of the children of the imperial family, daughters and sons of Paul Ist played an important role in the creation of the main scientific work of A. Storch «The Course of Political Economy, or an exposition of the principles that determine the well-being of the people» in six volumes. The priority positions of the academician in political economy, which still retain their relevance, are especially considered, primarily in his doctrine of internal benefits and civilization.

Introduction and reintroduction requires the movement of different groups of animals over considerable distances. In this case, there is a risk of the spread of infectious and parasitic diseases. The current veterinary rules and requirements contain instructions on measures for the import (movement) of zoo and circus animals, but there are no instructions on animals in protected areas. This paper proposes options for disinfection and disinfestation of various objects at the points of introduction and reintroduction of animals, based on the instructions approved by the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation. The work was carried out in connection with the need to develop recommendations to prevent the spread of infectious and invasive animal diseases, including anthropozoonoses, on the territory of the steppe scientific station of the Steppe Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences «Orenburg Tarpania».
