An optimal preview control of a vehicle suspension system traveling on a rough road is studied. A three-dimensional seven degree-of-freedom car-riding model and several descriptions of the road surface roughness heights, including haversine (hole/bump) and stochastic filtered white noise models, are used in the analysis. It is assumed that contact-less sensors affixed to the vehicle front bumper measure the road surface height at some distances in the front of the car. The suspension systems are optimized with respect to ride comfort and road holding preferences including accelerations of the sprung mass, tire deflection, suspension rattle space and control force. The performance and power demand of active, active and delay, active and preview systems are evaluated and are compared with those for the passive system. The results show that the optimal preview control improves all aspects of the vehicle suspension performance while requiring less power. Effects of variation of preview time and variations in the road condition are also examined.

Within the road investments the very important element determining repeatedly the success of the whole project is an adequate information about the characteristics of the site, its load capacity, stability and the possible impact of geological characteristics that may interfere with subsequent service life, not only for the road surface itself, but also for the surrounded objects. The surface is incessantly influenced by geological characteristics, determining its durability and functional usefulness. The main aim of this paper is to answer the question how by the usage of modern technics for obtaining data it is possible to find a link confirming the characteristics of land on which the specific road projects are supposed to be carried out, or where these projects have already been accomplished, concerning their requirements with high accuracy of location and also the stability and durability of the ground. This article makes also an attempt to answer not only the question how to identify the construction of road surface, but also how to locate underground cavities, created or influenced by the flow of water, or due to geological structures characterized as an inconsistent ground. The results were supported with geophysical researches using GPR method, and also data collected with laser scanners.

The article reviews the stability of an automobile on the road pavement with ruts. The problems of road safety depend on many factors. One of those is the quality of the road surface. Big heavy lorries deform the road surface causing ruts especially in the first line of the road. The article analyzes the influence of the geometry of ruts on the stability of the automobile. A mathematical model of a 3D automobile and the interaction between wheels and the road surface and the geometry of the road surface are presented. The mathematical criterion of the stability of the moving automobile on the road surface with ruts is laid down. The results of mathematical simulation and the criterion of the stability of the moving automobile (60 km/h) on the road surface depending on the depth of ruts are introduced.

In recent years, the construction of roads and bridges in China has been made remarkable achievements; the construction quality and road performance have been greatly improved. But the soft foundation settlement processing still prevents the quality of driving from improving. The improper handling of soft foundation settlement would result in vehicle bump at bridge head, and cause damage to the road surface of the bridge and telescopic device. On the principle of effective stress of the soil, a method is used to accelerate the foundation settlement in the negative pressure zone, and it has effectively reduced the differential settlement of bridge-head which improves the stability of roadbed.

In order to estimate the damping consumption of traditional suspension, this paper established the tracked vehicle model based on the dynamic simulation software RecurDyn, and the road models of B、D and F grad are constructed by harmony superposition method. Through the simulation of the suspension vibration, the relation between suspension consumption and different road surface and velocity is performed. The results supply some reference for the research on regenerative-energy suspension of tracked vehicle.

In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a quarter-car with two degree-of-freedom which consists of sprung mass and unsprung mass is examined. Nonlinearity occurred due to nonlinear hysteretic suspension damper and spring. Vehicle tire is modeled as a nonlinear hardening spring. The disturbance of road assumed to be sinusoid. Frequency response diagram of the model has been obtained. Results show that the dynamic response of the vehicle can be chaotic. Influence of road roughness amplitude on vehicle vibration is investigated and critical amplitude of the road surface profile is found, above which the system can vibrate chaotically. The comparison between the results obtained from the proposed model and those from the single degree-of-freedom quarter-car model shows that the unsprung mass has great influence on the dynamical behavior of the system, which cannot be ignored.
