This paper provides a characterization of the electrical energy consumption of agrifood industries located in the central region of Portugal that use refrigeration systems to ensure the food safety. The study is based on the result analysis of survey data and energy characteristics of the participating companies belonging to the following agrifood sectors: meat, dairy, horticultural, distribution and wine. Through the quantification of energy consumption of companies is possible to determine the amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions indexed to its manufacturing process. Comparing the energy and GHGs emissions indexes of companies of a sector and between sectors is possible to create reference levels. With the results of this work is possible to rating the companies in relation to reference levels of energy and GHGs emissions and thus promote the rational use of energy by the application of practice measures for the improvement of the energy efficiency and the reduction of GHGs emissions.

There are a lot of research programs focusing on the development of new solvents for carbon dioxide capture. The most important priority should be reducing the energy consumption needed at the regeneration step, but minimizing solvent degradation and its corrosivity is also considered as a priority. In this research, the aqueous blends of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP: 1 kmol·m−3) and 1-amino-2-propanol (MIPA: 0.1–0.5 kmol·m−3) are characterized in terms of density, viscosity, and surface tension. The carbon dioxide absorption rate and capacity, the regeneration capacity, and the corrosivity of these solvents are also evaluated.

The adhesive strength of ceramic - copper interfaces was measured in four point bending using a central notch for crack initiation. According to our method, plastic deformation may occur during the delamination process. FEM simulations were employed in order to separate elastic and plastic contributions to the energy consumption of the experiment. In conclusion, a novel delamination criterion based on the stress intensity at the crack tip was established. Here, the stress invariant J3is used as indicator for delamination of the interface. Agreement between experiments and theoretical interpretation is demonstrated for copper layers directly bonded to aluminum oxide.

ABSTRACTWe present a novel logic family alternative to classic CMOS logic and its experimental demonstration for digital application of organic electronics. The proposed logic family is a modified version of the complementary pass-transistor logic (mCPL), which allows use of a stronger transistor (in our case the p-FET) to provide more of the current required to switch the capacitance in the device. We report the integration and characterization of this new class of gates and compare them with the equivalent CMOS structures. The characterization of inverters shows improved tolerance to process variation, up to 2.5× better delay, and 1.7× smaller area for the mCPL devices. Comparison of NOR and NAND gates shows 1.8× and 4.1× reduced gate delay. A 3× reduced energy consumption per operation is also simulated. The improved performance of the mCPL design makes it an alternative architecture for logic application of organic electronics.

This paper provides a characterization of the electrical energy consumption of agrifood industries located in the central region of Portugal that use refrigeration systems to ensure the food safety. The study is based on the result analysis of survey data and energy characteristics of the participating companies. The agrifood industries included in the survey belong to the following sector: meat, dairy, horticultural, distribution and wine. The comparison of energy indicators for the specific electrical energy consumption of companies of a sector and between sectors is analysed and discussed, providing reference levels for the energy performance of agrifood industries. Since the agrifood sector accounts for high level of energy consumption, the energy performance level knowledge can promote the rational use of energy as well as helping on the decision making of practice measures for the improvement of the energy efficiency.
