Owing to the deep integration of the information and communication technologies, power cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have become smart but are vulnerable to cyber attacks. To correctly assess the vulnerability of power CPSs and further study feasible countermeasures, we verify that a data-driven target attack on a nonlinear Granger causality graph (NGCG) can be constructed successfully, even if adversaries cannot acquire the configuration information of the systems. A NGCG is a unified framework for the processing and analysis of nonlinear measurement data or datasets and can be used to evaluate the significance of power nodes or lines. In addition, an algorithm including data-driven parameter estimation, noise removal and data reconstruction based on symplectic geometry is introduced to make the NGCG a parameter-free and noise-tolerant method. In particular, three new indexes on the weight analysis of the NGCG are defined to quantitatively evaluate the significance of power nodes or lines. Finally, several case studies of a nonlinear simulation model and power systems in detail verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed data-driven target attack. The results show the proposed target attack can select the key attack targets more accurately and lead to physical system collapse with the least number of attack steps.

This article discusses various aspects of a course on cyber-physical systems (CPS) in the educational programs of defense organizations. CPS are engineered systems that are built from, and depend upon, the seamless integration of computational algorithms and physical components. The article also highlights various objectives of the CPS course. A central challenge to deploying resilient CPSs involves the appreciation for the multi-disciplinary challenges and the lack of a unified framework for CPS analysis, design and implementation. A significant part of the course focuses on a case study in industrial control of a Vinyl Acetate (VAc) chemical plant. The course described herein presents fundamental concepts within the rapidly expanding field of CPS and has been tailored to and is well received by U.S. Naval Academy Systems Engineering senior level engineering students. The U.S. Naval Academy thrust in cyber security studies includes a new major, Cyber Sciences, and construction of a new facility, Hopper Hall, to house the assembled multi-disciplinary teaching and research team.

In recent years, the rise in the demand for quality products and services along with systems that could integrate the control mechanisms with high computational capabilities led to the evolution of cyber-physical systems (CPS). Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several industries have remained closed, causing several monetary losses. Automation can help in such scenarios to keep the industries up and running in a way that the system could be monitored and controlled remotely using voice. The chapter deals with the integration of both industrial automation and cyber-physical systems in various industries like the automobile industry, manufacturing industries, construction industries, and so on. A proposed approach for machine handling using CPS, deep learning, and industrial automation with the help of voice. The proposed approach provides greater insights into the application of CPS in the area and the combination of CPS and deep learning to a greater extent.
