Domestic heating contributes to a significant amount of energy usage in the Netherlands. Due to scare energy resources, attention to develop new and efficient technologies is increasing. At ECN, a burner driven heat pump employing thermoacoustic technology is being developed for possible applications in households and offices. The desired temperature lift is from 10 °C to 80 °C. As a first step the heat pump is driven by a linear motor. Measurements and performance analysis of the heat pump are presented in this paper. The heat pump has a coefficient of performance which is the ratio of heat produced to the work input of 1.38 when operating between 10 °C to 80 °C. The performance relative to maximum possible Carnot value is 26.5%.

Abstract Big data analytics (BDA) in e-commerce, which is an emerging field that started in 2006, deeply affects the development of global e-commerce, especially its layout and performance in the U.S. and China. This paper seeks to examine the relative influence of theoretical research of BDA in e-commerce to explain the differences between the U.S. and China by adopting a statistical analysis method on the basis of samples collected from two main literature databases, Web of Science and CNKI, aimed at the U.S. and China. The results of this study help clarify doubts regarding the development of China’s e-commerce, which exceeds that of the U.S. today, in view of the theoretical comparison of BDA in e-commerce between them.

Learning analytics can be used to enhance student engagement and performance in online courses. Using learning analytics, instructors can collect and analyze data about students and improve the design and delivery of instruction to make it more meaningful for them. In this paper, the authors review different categories of online assessments and identify data sets that can be collected and analyzed for each of them. Two different data analytics and visualization tools were used: Tableau for quantitative data and Many Eyes for qualitative data. This paper has implications for instructors, instructional designers, administrators, and educational researchers who use online assessments.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the principles that underpin library assessment, methods used for impact and performance evaluation and how academic libraries should use the findings, and it discusses how value frameworks help. Design/methodology/approach This is a literature review covering aspects of value (value propositions, value co-creation), value frameworks (including the 2015 ACRL framework, Holbrook typology with worked example), data analytics and collaborative projects including LibQUAL+ initiatives and the use of balanced scorecard principles (including a values scorecard). Findings The use of data analytics in library assessment requires collaboration among library services to develop reliable data sets. Scorecards help ongoing impact and performance evaluation. Queries that arise may require a framework, or logic model, to formulate suitable questions and assemble evidence (qualitative and quantitative) to answer new questions about the value of library services. The perceived value framework of Holbrook’s typology, the values scorecard and the ACRL framework all support the deeper level of inquiry required. Research limitations/implications Includes examples of possible application of frameworks. Practical implications A value framework might help data analytic approaches in combining qualitative and quantitative data. Social implications Impact assessment may require assessing how value is co-created with library users in use of e-resources and open data. Originality/value The study contrasts the varying approaches to impact evaluation and library assessment in academic libraries, and it examines more in-depth value frameworks.

In the wake of the Montara spill many companies have renewed efforts to review and implement leading safety and environmental performance; however, the issue is conceivably even more fundamental. With the recent Deepwater Horizon spillage, BP has booked a $US 32.2 billion provision to cover the costs of the spill—with the result that the company recorded the worst quarterly loss in British corporate history. What would a board need to know, in what form, and by when, in such a situation? Does the governance of such issues need to be strengthened? And in what way? How material and how effective is the oversight exercised by boards over operations of high technical expertise and remote location? What are the questions that boards should be asking about safety and environmental performance? And what are the real lead indicators of risk and performance shortfall? This presentation will draw from research by Deloitte’s Centre for Corporate Governance, as well as from interviews with Australian directors. It will also explore the issue of safety and environmental risk from the human capital perspective of talent management and shortage—mindful that the very impetus for the recently released report by the National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce was the decision to sanction the Gorgon LNG Project now underway. Finally, this presentation will outline some of the latest data analytics available to boards and management to gain insight into OHS and environmental incidents so that they can design measurable interventions to minimise risk.

The location analytics industry has the potential to stimulate critical sociological discussions concerning the credibility of data analytics to enact new spatial classifications and metrics of socio-economic phenomena. Key debates in the sociology of geodemographics are revisited in this article in light of recent developments in algorithmic culture to understand how location analytics impacts the structural contexts of classification and relevance in digital marketing. It situates this within a locative imaginary, where marketers are experimenting with consolidating the epistemes of behavioural targeting, classification and performance evaluation in urban environments through spatial analytics of movement. This opens up future research into the political and cultural economies of relevance in media landscapes and the social shaping of valuable subjects by third-party data brokers and analytics platforms that have become matters of public and regulatory concern.

<p>Evaluation and estimation of energy consumption are essential in order to classify the amount of energy used and the way it is utilized in building. Hence, the possibility of any energy savings potential and energy savings opportunities can be identified. The intention of this article is to study and evaluate energy usage pattern of the Central Queensland University campus’ buildings, Queensland, Australia. This article presents the field survey results from the audit of an office building and performance-related measurements of the indoor environmental parameters, for instance, indoor air temperature, humidity and energy consumption concerned to the indoor heating and cooling load. Monthly observed energy usage information was employed to investigate influence of the climate conditions on energy usage.</p>
