The corrosion behavior of Mg-3Al-xGe (x = 1, 3, 5) alloy in as-cast and as-solid was investigated by virtue of microstructure, corrosion morphology observation, and electrochemical measurement. Among the as-cast alloys, the corrosion rate of Mg-3Al-1Ge with a discontinuous bar-morphology was the highest, which was 101.7 mm·a−1; the corrosion rate of Mg-3Al-3Ge with a continuous network distribution was the lowest, which was 23.1 mm·a−1; and the corrosion rate of Mg-3Al-5Ge of Ge-enriched phase with sporadic distribution was in-between, which was 63.9 mm·a−1. It is suggested that the morphology of the Mg2Ge phase changes with a change in Ge content, which affects the corrosion performance of the alloy. After solid solution treatment, the corrosion rate of the corresponding solid solution alloy increased—Mg-3Al-1Ge to 140.5 mm·a−1, Mg-3Al-3Ge to 52.9 mm·a−1, and Mg-3Al-5Ge to 87.3 mm·a−1, respectively. After investigation of the microstructure, it can be suggested that solid solution treatment dissolves the Mg17Al12 phase, which changes the phase composition of the alloy and also affects its microstructure, thus affecting its corrosion performance.

In this paper, the effects of Sb and RE on the solutionized microstructure and microhardness of Mg-6A1-1Zn-0.7Si magnesium alloy are investigated. The research results indicate that the solid solution treatment can result to the modification of Chinese script shaped Mg2Si phases in the microstructure of experimental alloy, and adding small amounts of RE and Sb can strengthen the modification efficiency. In addition, after the solid solution treatment at 420°C, the Mg-6A1-1Zn-0.7Si alloy added 0.4%Sb and 0.25%RE exhibits higher microhardness, but the effect of Sb and RE additions on the changing law between microhardness and solutionized time, is not obvious.

A series of Mg-6Al-2Sr-1.5Y-xNd (x=0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2) alloy samples were prepared and their microstructures were observed and mechanical properties were measured. The existing forms of Y and Nd were studied. The effects of Y and Nd on microstructure and mechanical properties of AJ62 alloy were investigated. The results show that the main existing forms of Y and Nd in AJ62 alloy are Al2Y and Al2Nd. The combined addition of rare earth Y and Nd can refine α-Mg matrix obviously and reduce the amount of the β-Mg17Al12phases; after solid solution treatment, the tensile strength of the alloys rise first and fall later with increasing content of Nd. When the content of Nd is about 0.6%wt, the values of tensile strengthes are up to the maximum both at room temperature and at 448 K.

The effects of solid solution treatment on high cycle fatigue behavior of cast magnesium alloy AZ91D were investigated using an up-and-down load method. High cycle fatigue tests were carried out up to 107cycles at a stress ratio R=0.1 and frequency of 90Hz on specimens using a high frequency fatigue machine. The results showed that the fatigue strength of cast AZ91D magnesium alloy increase from 54.5Mpa to 71.5Mpa after solid solution treatment (T4) at 415°C, keeping temperature 16hours. The micro-fatigue fracture surface of alloy included fatigue initiation area, fatigue crack propagation area and fatigue fracture area. Fatigue crack of the alloys initiate principally at inclusions and shrinks under subsurface. The fatigue fracture of test specimens show the rupture characteristics of quasi-cleavage(as-cast alloy) and toughness(T4 alloy), respectively.

After solid solution treatment at 1335°C for 4 hours and cooling to room temperature at different rate, the nickel-based single crystal superalloy were made into three kinds of nickel-based single crystal superalloy materials containing different size γ′ phases, respectively. The tensile test of I-shaped specimens was carried out at 980°C, and their effect of γ′ phase microstructure on the tensile properties was studied. The results show that the yielding strength of the material air-cooled to room temperature was lower than that with cooling rate at 0.15°C/s, but both of them were lower than the yielding strength of original material. Little difference was found on the elastic modulus of I-shaped specimens made of three kinds of materials. When the cubic degree of the γ′ phase is higher and the size is larger, the tensile properties of the material is better, which can be attributed to the larger size and narrower channel of the matrix phase that lead to higher dislocation resistance.
