In the search for new carriers capable of transporting toxic drugs to a target, particular attention has been devoted to supramolecular systems with a ribbon-like micellar structure of which Congo red is an example. A special promise of the possible use of such systems for directing drugs to a target emerges from their particular affinity to immune complexes and as an independent property, binding many organic compounds including drugs by intercalation. Serum albumin also appeared able to bind micellar particles of such systems. It may protect them against dilution in transport. The mathematical tool, which relies on analysis of the distribution of polarity and hydrophobicity in protein molecules (fuzzy oil drop model), has been used to find the location of binding area in albumin as well as anchorage site for Congo red in heated IgG light chain used as a model presenting immunoglobulin-like structures. Results confirm the suggested formerly binding site of Congo red in V domain of IgG light chain and indicated the cleft between pseudo-symmetric domains of albumin as the area of attachment for the dye.

Several studies of biofilms must accept that biofilms may develop in an enormous number of environments. This biofilm forms colonization on the solid surfaces by extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs) secreted by the microbial cells. The EPSs secreted by microbial cell stimulate corrosion in the engineered materials due to the presence of polyanionic neutral macromolecules. Many techniques have been described measuring and inhibiting microbiologically influenced corrosion; however, none has been accepted as an industry standard. This is because the risks posed to the marine biosphere due to the use of antifouling inhibitors. Recently, a large amount of literature has been edited on the influence of toxic biocides on non-targeted organisms in the marine environment are most likely. It has been shown that the modifications of antifouling inhibitors by the non-toxic drugs can reduce microbial adhesion and some disentangle effects toward the environment. Hence, in this paper, the inhibition effect of neomycin trisulfate on the Klebsiella oxytoca on mild steel corrosion has been investigated using weight loss measurement, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). These studies have shown that neomycin trisulfate shows better inhibition toward the microbe. The agreement with the experimental data was also found to be satisfactory. Further, surface morphological examination through SEM confirms that the inhibitor inhibits the microbes by blocking the EPS

SUMMARY INTRODUCTION Iron overload is a broad syndrome with a large spectrum of causative etiologies that lead to iron deposition. When iron exceeds defenses, it causes oxidative damage and tissular disfunction. Treatment may prevent organ dysfunction, leading to greater life expectancy. METHODS Literature from the last five years was reviewed through the use of the PubMed database in search of treatment strategies. DISCUSSION Different pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies are available for the treatment of iron overload and must be used according to etiology and patient compliance. Therapeutic phlebotomy is the basis for the treatment of hereditary hemochromatosis. Transfusional overload patients and those who cannot tolerate phlebotomy need iron chelators. CONCLUSION Advances in the understanding of iron overload have lead to great advances in therapies and new pharmacological targets. Research has lead to better compliance with the use of oral chelators and less toxic drugs.

To the Editor.— The paper by Avery et al,1 further demonstrates the potential usefulness of corticosteroids in chronic lung disease of prematurity. However, initial reports in 1974 and 1975 met with criticism for the use of potentially toxic drugs in premature infants.2,3 In 1983 we retrospectively reviewed 23 infants with chronic lung disease of prematurity who received corticosteroids and identified distinct differences between responders and nonresponders which suggested different types of lung disease.4 Our responders all showed a greater than 30% decrease in AaPo2 by day 6 and showed maximal response by ten days of therapy.
