With increasing age, muscle strength decreases excessively rapidly if physical activity is not maintained. However, physical activity is increasingly difficult with aging. This is due to balance, strength or coordination difficulties, arthritis, etc. Moreover, many nursing home residents become unable to experience natural surroundings. Augmenting a conventional biking exercise with a recreational virtual environment (RVE) has shown to serve as an intrinsic motivation contributor to exercise for nursing home residents. RVEs might be able to provide some of the health benefits that regular nature experiences do. More studies on content of proper custom designs for RVEs are necessary. This paper reviews the background for RVE design, describes four custom RVE designs for recreational VE exploration and presents user preferences among nursing home users concerning content and other pivotal design considerations.

Safety commuting environment can promote children’s walking and cycling, thus reducing the risk of obesity and other diseases. Most of the existing studies on children’s safety focus on open space, but pay little attention to children's commuting environment. Moreover, few studies pay attention to the differences between open blocks and gated communities in winter city. Taking Harbin, a winter city in China, as an example, this study uses the optimized IPA method to explore the built environment factors affecting pupils’ commuting safety from three aspects: environment design, social management and road traffic. The results show that the influencing factors of road traffic have the highest impact on pupils‘ commuting safety. In addition, the occupation management in social management also has a great impact. In terms of satisfaction, the satisfaction with gated communities is generally higher than that with open blocks, but the satisfaction of open block is higher in neighbourhood relationship and street thermal environment. By coupling the importance and satisfaction of influencing factors, it is found that safety guardrail, signal identification, occupation management are in urgent need of renovation.

Thermal environmental design in an outdoor space is discussed by focusing on the proper selection and arrangement of buildings, trees, and covering materials via the examination of redevelopment buildings in front of Central Osaka Station, where several heat island countermeasure technologies have been introduced. Surface temperatures on the ground and wall were calculated based on the surface heat budget equation in each 2 m size mesh of the ground and building wall surface. Incident solar radiation was calculated using ArcGIS and building shape data. Mean radiant temperature (MRT) of the human body was calculated using these results. Distribution of wind velocity was calculated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) reproducing buildings, obstacles, trees, and the surroundings. The effect of MRT on SET* was greater than that of wind velocity at 13:00 and 17:00 on a typical summer day. SET* reduction was the highest by solar radiation shading, followed by surface material change and ventilation. The largest ratio of the area considered for the thermal environment was 83% on Green Garden, which consists of 44% of building shade, 21% of tree shade, 7% of water surface, and 11% of green cover. It is appropriate to consider the thermal environment design of outdoor space in the order of shade by buildings, shading by trees, and improvement of surface materials.

Based on the recognition of original defective residential housing environment in Daping village, constructional measures were improved and updated. Objective test and subjective investigation on indoor thermal comfort were carried out and analyzed in the typically new and old residential houses to propose measures for further improvements. This paper aims to summarize experience and deficiencies in aspects of indoor thermal environment design and to provide reference to building design after disasters in future.

Open space is an important part of Campus, also has an important influence to the thermal environment of campus. The measurement of summer outdoor thermal environment of campus open space showed that: the piloti can effectively improve the thermal environment in hot summer; underlying surface materials, sky view factor has a great influence on the outdoor thermal environment. Using appropriate surface structure, increasing piloti and increasing square shading are suggested as outdoor thermal environment optimizing measures based the measure results. Advices were given for hot environment design and passive energy saving design
