RedOx processes determine the resistance of the organism to pollutants. The aim of the study was to establish a possible relationship between copper and zinc concentration in the blood of calves and the enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase. The study was conducted in 2019 on 50 calves with a weight of 201-250 kg. The samples of venous blood were taken to estimate the level of hemoglobin, glutathione, metallothioneins, as well as zinc, copper, and superoxide dismutase activity. The obtained average values of these substances concentration were compared between each other. A positive correlation between the activity of superoxide dismutase and the concentration of zinc (r = 0.64) and copper (r = 0.87) in the blood of calves has been established. It may be because both metals are obligatory components of superoxide dismutase. There is also a positive relationship between the levels of copper and zinc (r = 0.68). For the other parameters, no reliable relationship was found. The data obtained indicate a positive relationship between the activity of superoxide dismutase and metal concentrations of copper and zinc in the blood of calves. At the same time, a more significant positive relationship is established for copper.

Objective : To investigate the effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and pentoxifylline in a model of remote organ injury after hind-limb ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) in rats, the lungs being the remote organ system. Methods : Thirty-five male Wistar rats were assigned to one of five conditions (n = 7/group), as follows: sham operation (control group); hind-limb ischemia, induced by clamping the left femoral artery, for 2 h, followed by 24 h of reperfusion (I/R group); and hind-limb ischemia, as above, followed by intraperitoneal injection (prior to reperfusion) of 150 mg/kg of NAC (I/R+NAC group), 40 mg/kg of pentoxifylline (I/R+PTX group), or both (I/R+NAC+PTX group). At the end of the trial, lung tissues were removed for histological analysis and assessment of oxidative stress. Results : In comparison with the rats in the other groups, those in the I/R group showed lower superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione levels, together with higher malondialdehyde levels and lung injury scores (p < 0.05 for all). Interstitial inflammatory cell infiltration of the lungs was also markedly greater in the I/R group than in the other groups. In addition, I/R group rats showed various signs of interstitial edema and hemorrhage. In the I/R+NAC, I/R+PTX, and I/R+NAC+PTX groups, superoxide dismutase activity, glutathione levels, malondialdehyde levels, and lung injury scores were preserved (p < 0.05 for all). The differences between the administration of NAC or pentoxifylline alone and the administration of the two together were not significant for any of those parameters (p > 0.05 for all). Conclusions : Our results suggest that NAC and pentoxifylline both protect lung tissue from the effects of skeletal muscle I/R. However, their combined use does not appear to increase the level of that protection.

This study analyzed the effect of the elements from fraud triangle, which included pressure (LEV, ROA, ACHANGE), opportunity (BDOUT), and rationalization (AUDCHANGE) in detecting fraudulent financial statement. Control variables that will be included in this study are firm’s age, firm’s size, liquidity risk, and managerial ownership. The sample that will be used in this study is non-financial companies that are listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange in the periode of 2011-2016. From the result, this study showed that change of assets (ACHANGE) and change of auditors (AUDCHANGE) has a significant positive relationship with the fraudulent financial statement, while the other variables such as leverage (LEV), return on asset (ROA) and ineffective monitoring (BDOUT) has no significant in the relationship with the fraudulent financial statement.

SUMMARY Incubation of hamster adrenal tissue in Krebs bicarbonate Ringer solution gave rapid conversion of added [4-14C]cortisol to cortisone. Moreover, incubation in Ringer solution with [4-14C]progesterone as precursor invariably yielded cortisone in greater amounts than cortisol. On the other hand it has been confirmed that cortisol is the major free ultraviolet absorbing steroid in the adrenal venous blood of the hamster. Incubation of adrenal tissue with [4-14C]progesterone in hamster whole blood gave relatively greater amounts of cortisol which were more in keeping with the findings in vivo. This suggested that the blood contains factors which affect the cortisone-cortisol equilibrium by modifying adrenal enzyme activity. Some reduction of [3H] cortisone to cortisol was also observed during incubation with blood alone.

As illegal mining in Ghana has become increasingly rampant ever, this study aimed at examining the effect of illegal mining on the dimensions of sustainability performance among crop farmers and the challenges they face because of illegal mining in the Ashanti Region, Ghana. To investigate the intriguing connections among illegal mining and sustainability performance among crop farmers, this paper draws on multidisciplinary literature and collects empirical data from 250 respondents in the Atwima Nwabiagya and Atwima Mponua Districts, Ghana to test the proposed model and hypotheses using structural equation modeling. All the three (3) elements or paradigms of sustainability performance were negatively affected by illegal mining activities. It was also observed that a significant positive relationship exists among all the elements of sustainability performance hence a consequence on one element may affect the other. Unlike most research on illegal mining that has been theoretical, this study represents one of the few empirical analyses of how illegal mining may affect sustainability performance

Hepatic antioxidant enzymes as oxidative stress biomarkers were investigated and correlated with the identified dominant gut microbial phyla. The results showed that while the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) levels were reduced in the polluted PO site, significant elevation (*P ≥ 0.05) was observed at the clean reference CR site indicating negative correlation to pollution stress. On the other hand, among five significant bacterial genera, Lactobacillus and Vagococcus showed a positive relationship to the oxidative pollution stress between PO and CR sites. Diversity and bacterial richness had been observed in the PO site compared to the CR site. As a result, 429,346 sequences were obtained from the pooling of 20 samples identified into 10 phyla and 79 genera in which Firmicutes was dominant in both PO and CR sites. The number of common OTUs was 221 for both CR and PO samples. The results revealed that under the stressed environmental state, the homo-lactic Vagococcus genus is dominant over the hetero-lactic Lactobacillus, which uses less energy in the derived process.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the relationship between the parameters of glycemic control, and zinc concentrations in blood and superoxide dismutase enzyme activity in type 2 diabetes patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Seventy-three individuals, aged between 25 and 59 years, were divided into the experimental group (type 2 diabetes patients, n = 36) and control group (n = 37). Plasma and erythrocyte zinc concentrations, superoxide dismutase activity, and parameters of glycemic control were analyzed. RESULTS: Mean plasma zinc concentration was 74.1 ± 10.7 µg/dL and 68.8 ± 9.6 µg/dL, erythrocyte zinc concentration was 48.1 ± 9.5 µg/gHb and 41.2 ± 8.0 µg/gHb, and superoxide dismutase activity was 2248.9 ± 300.0 U/gHb and 2059.6 ± 285.4 U/gHb, in the experimental group and the control group, respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Type 2 diabetes patients showed a positive response to oxidative stress due to adequate zinc concentration in blood and increased activity of superoxide dismutase, and the enzyme was influenced by serum insulin.
