Effect of Loading on Stress Intensification Factors

The basic objective of this investigation is to determine the effect of loading on the stress intensification factors of Markl’s fatigue evaluation method for metal piping. Markl’s method is based on the fatigue testing of 4 in. schedule 40 carbon steel cantilever piping. Subsequent testing using a four-point loading showed that the S-N data were different from that predicted by the procedure and equation developed by Markl. Markl’s method is based on determining the elastic-plastic forces in a piping system by multiplying the elastic system stiffness by the actual deflection. In this manner a fictitious force is calculated to determine piping stresses assuming the elastic beam bending equation, Mc/I, applies even in partially plastic pipes. Previous analytical work on this topic by Rodabaugh and Scavuzzo (“Fatigue of Butt Welded Pipe and the Effect of Testing Methods–Report 2: Effect of Testing Methods on Stress Intensification Factors,” Welding Research Bulletin 433, July 1998) showed that these measured differences should occur between cantilever and four-point tests using Markl’s method. The basic assumption in this analytical comparison is that strain-cycle correlations lead to the correct prediction of fatigue life. Using the measured alternating strain, both types of test geometries lead to the same prediction of fatigue life using these strain-cycle correlations. In this study, the same analytical assumptions used by Rodabaugh and Scavuzzo (above) are applied to a pipe where the load is varied from a four-point loading through its extremes. Loads were varied from a cantilever to an end moment by changing the dimensions of four-point loading. Also, the shape of a bilinear stress-strain curve was varied from a perfectly plastic material to various degrees of work hardening by increasing the tangent modulus in the plastic regime. The results of the study indicate that Markl’s method is conservative by predicting too short a fatigue life for four-point loading for a given stress. As indicated by this study, the differences can be very large in the low-cycle regime for a perfectly plastic material and for a four-point loading approaching an end moment. Thus, piping could be over designed with unnecessary conservatism using the current ASME Code method based on stress intensification factors.

The traditional Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) evaluation method is based on elastic analysis with Neuber’s rule which is usually considered to be over conservative. However, the effective strain range at the steady cycle should be calculated by detailed cycle-by-cycle analysis for the alternative elastic-plastic method in ASME VIII-2, which is obviously time-consuming. A Direct Steady Cycle Analysis (DSCA) method within the Linear Matching Method (LMM) framework is proposed to assess the fatigue life accurately and efficiently for components with arbitrary geometries and cyclic loads. Temperature-dependent stress-strain relationships considering the strain hardening described by the Ramberg-Osgood (RO) formula are discussed and compared with those results obtained by the Elastic-Perfectly Plastic (EPP) model. Additionally, a Reversed Plasticity Domain Method (RPDM) based on the shakedown and ratchet limit analysis method and the DSCA approach within the LMM framework (LMM DSCA) is recommended to design cyclic load levels of LCF experiments with predefined fatigue life ranges.

An energy-based fatigue life prediction framework for calculation of torsional fatigue life and remaining life has been developed. The framework for this fatigue prediction method is developed in accordance with our previously developed energy-based axial and bending fatigue life prediction approaches, which state: the total strain energy dissipated during a monotonic fracture and cyclic processes is the same material property, where each can be determined by measuring the area underneath the monotonic true stress-strain curve and the area within a hysteresis loop, respectively. The energy-based fatigue life prediction framework is composed of the following entities: (1) development of a shear fatigue testing procedure capable of assessing strain energy density per cycle in a pure shear stress state and (2) incorporation of an energy-based fatigue life calculation scheme to determine the remaining fatigue life of in-service gas turbine materials subjected to pure shear fatigue.

The most important failure mode to be prevented in the design is creep-fatigue at elevated temperatures in fast reactors. 316FR stainless steel is a candidate material for the reactor vessel and internal structures. Development of the procedure for evaluating creep-fatigue life is essential. The method for evaluating creep-fatigue life implemented in the Japan Society Mechanical Engineers code is based on the time fraction rule for austenitic stainless steel such as SUS304. Necessary equations such as fatigue curve and creep rupture curve for calculation of creep-fatigue life are evaluated, and the predicted creep-fatigue life by using the time fraction rule in 316FR stainless steel is compared with experimental data. The longest time to failure is about 100,000 h for evaluating creep-fatigue life. Fatigue curve, creep rupture curve, stress-strain curve and creep strain curve are provided for calculating creep-fatigue life. The creep-fatigue life is predicted within a factor of 2 even the test condition of the longest time to failure. Furthermore, comparison with the ductility exhaustion method was done to investigate the conservatism of the proposed method. Finally, the procedure based on the time fraction rule for evaluation of creep-fatigue life is proposed in 316FR stainless steel.

Finally, a procedure based on the time fraction rule for the evaluation of creep–fatigue life is proposed for 316FR stainless steel.

Elbow is a type of components widely used in a piping system, and so it is very important to know the plastic carrying capacity of elbow. In this study, the elastic-plastic behavior of elbows with various ratios of t/rm and relative bending radius R/rm were investigated in detail by using of three-dimensional (3D) non-linear finite element (FE) analyses, assuming elastic-perfectly-plastic material behaviour and taking geometric nonlinearity into account. The analyses indicated that elbow exhibited different behavior obviously at the elastic-plastic states subjected to In-Plane opening bending moment and closing bending moment. The closed form equations of elbow involving effect of tangent pipes were established.

This work is to address the creep analysis for components at elevated temperatures based on isochronous stress-strain curve and the elastic-perfectly plastic material model through numerical analyses. Numerical results presented that the creep deformation is very sensitive to the target inelastic strain chosen for analysis. A small inelastic strain, corresponding to a small yield stress, can cause very conservative result for the case studied. Moreover, the target inelastic strain, corresponding to the minimum inelastic strain along with the given path, is different from each other for various internal pressures.

The present paper establishes and interprets the global uniaxial stress-strain behavior of regularly perforated plate, throughout the elastic, partly plastic, and fully plastic regimes up to fracture, as function of hole size and number. The elastic part of the stress-strain curve is described by means of an effective modulus of elasticity which is obtained by using the strain energy stored in the plate. During the partly plastic range, perforated plate response has been found to be governed essentially by the remaining elastic portion and consequently appears as part of the elastic behavior. Beyond global yield point, the material is nearly perfectly plastic for a large range of strains and upper and lower limits of collapse load are calculated by using upper and lower-bound techniques for a perfectly plastic material. Experiments were conducted and serve as the basis for the theoretical interpretation.

Several standard fatigue testing methods are used to determine the fatigue stress-life prediction model (S-N curve) and the endurance limit of Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams, including the application of constant cyclic tension-tension loads at different stress or strain ranges. The standard fatigue testing methods are time-consuming and expensive to perform, as a large number of specimens is needed to obtain valid results. The purpose of this paper is to examine a fatigue stress-life predication model of RC beams that are developed with an accelerated fatigue approach. This approach is based on the hypothesis of linear accumulative damage of the Palmgren–Miner rule, whereby the applied cyclic load range is linearly increased with respect to the number of cycles until the specimen fails. A three-dimensional RC beam was modeled and validated using ANSYS software. Numerical simulations were performed for the RC beam under linearly increased cyclic loading with different initial loading conditions. A fatigue stress-life model was developed that was based on the analyzed data of three specimens. The accelerated fatigue approach has a higher rate of damage accumulations than the standard testing approach. All of the analyzed specimens failed due to an unstable cracking of concrete. The developed fatigue stress-life model fits the upper 95% prediction band of RC beams that were tested under constant amplitude cyclic loading.

The literature in the area of material fatigue indicates that the fatigue properties may change with the number of cycles. Researchers recommend taking this into account in fatigue life calculation algorithms. The results of simulation research presented in this paper relate to an algorithm for estimating the fatigue life of specimens subjected to block loading with a nonzero mean value. The problem of block loads using a novel calculation model is presented in this paper. The model takes into account the change in stress–strain curve parameters caused by mean strain. Simulation tests were performed for generated triangular waveforms of strains, where load blocks with changed mean strain values were applied. During the analysis, the degree of fatigue damage was compared. The results of calculations obtained for standard values of stress–strain parameters (for symmetric loads) and those determined, taking into account changes in the curve parameters, are compared and presented in this paper. It is shown that by neglecting the effect of the mean strain value on the K′ and n′ parameters and by considering only the parameters of the cyclic deformation curve for εm = 0 (symmetric loads), the ratio of the total degree of fatigue damage varies from 10% for εa = 0.2% to 3.5% for εa = 0.6%. The largest differences in the calculation for ratios of the partial degrees of fatigue damage were observed in relation to the reference case for the sequence of block n3, where εm = 0.4%. The simulation results show that higher mean strains change the properties of the material, and in such cases, it is necessary to take into account the influence of the mean value on the material response under block loads.

Standards for the fatigue testing of wearable sensing technologies are lacking. The majority of published fatigue tests for wearable sensors are performed on proof-of-concept stretch sensors fabricated from a variety of materials. Due to their flexibility and stretchability, polymers are often used in the fabrication of wearable sensors. Other materials, including textiles, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and conductive metals or inks, may be used in conjunction with polymers to fabricate wearable sensors. Depending on the combination of the materials used, the fatigue behaviors of wearable sensors can vary. Additionally, fatigue testing methodologies for the sensors also vary, with most tests focusing only on the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) regime, and few sensors are cycled until failure or runout are achieved. Fatigue life predictions of wearable sensors are also lacking. These issues make direct comparisons of wearable sensors difficult. To facilitate direct comparisons of wearable sensors and to move proof-of-concept sensors from “bench to bedside,” fatigue testing standards should be established. Further, both high-cycle fatigue (HCF) and failure data are needed to determine the appropriateness in the use, modification, development, and validation of fatigue life prediction models and to further the understanding of how cracks initiate and propagate in wearable sensing technologies.
