This paper describes an experimental investigation into the dynamic characteristics of corrugated foil (bump foil) strips used in compliant surface foil journal bearings and dampers. In the experimental method described herein, a test facility with a journal supported by a compliant foil journal bearing was built. The nonrotating journal was driven by two shakers which were used to simulate dynamic forces acting on bump foil strips. The dynamic structural stiffness and equivalent viscous damping coefficients are calculated based on the experimental measurements for a wide range of operating conditions. The results are compared to the analytical predictions obtained by a theoretical model developed earlier.

Both theoretical and experimental results show that an increase in the excitation frequency decreases the direct damping term. The effect of frequency on the cross-coupling terms is much less than on the direct terms.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the dynamic structural stiffness and damping characteristics of a 21.6‐cm(8.5in.)-diameter compliant surface foil journal bearing. The goal of this development was to achieve high levels of damping without the use of oil, as is used in squeeze film dampers, while maintaining a nearly constant dynamic stiffness over a range of frequencies and amplitudes of motion. In the experimental work described herein, a full compliant foil bearing was designed, fabricated, and tested. The test facility included a non-rotating journal located inside the bearing. The journal was connected to an electrodynamic shaker so that dynamic forces simulating expected operating conditions could be applied to the structurally compliant bump foil elements. Excitation test frequencies to a maximum of 400Hz at amplitudes of motion between 25.4 and 102μm were applied to the damper assembly. During testing, both compressive preload and unidirectional static loads of up to 1335 and 445N, respectively, were applied to the damper assembly. The experimental data from these tests were analyzed using both a single degree of freedom model and an energy method. These methods of data analysis are reviewed here and results are compared. Excellent agreement in results obtained from the two methods was achieved. Equivalent viscous damping coefficients as high as 1050N.s∕cm(600lbf.s∕in) were obtained at low frequencies. Dynamic stiffness was shown to be fairly constant with frequency.

The dynamic structural stiffness and equivalent viscous damping coefficients were calculated based on the experimental measurements for a wide range of operating conditions. The results were compared to the analytical predictions obtained by a theoretical model developed earlier, and the agreement is considered reasonably well. Both experimental and theoretical results show that the direct structural stiffness and damping coefficients increase with increasing bearing static load.

This paper presents a solution to the problem of hydrodynamic lubrication of journal bearings taking into account the elastic distortions of the shaft and the bearing. The exact solution for determining the elastic deformation for a given pressure distribution around a bearing is given, together with the reiterative procedure adopted to find the pressure distribution which satisfies both the hydrodynamic and elastic requirements of the system. Results are given which have been derived for a material with a Poisson’s ratio of 0.28, but other values such as 0.33 do not incur substantial errors. The results can be applied to a wide range of operating conditions using the nondimensional group of terms suggested in the paper. The bearing is assumed to be infinite in length, and infinite in thickness. The latter assumption is shown to be valid for a particular case where the outside diameter of the bearing shell is 3.5 times the shaft diameter. A further assumption in the calculation is a condition of constant viscosity of the lubricant existing around the bearing.

Abstract This paper describes an experimental investigation into the dynamic characteristics of corrugated foil (bump foil) strips used in compliant surface foil bearings. This study provided the first opportunity to quantify the dynamic structural stiffness of bump foil strips for a wide range of operating conditions. The experimental data were compared to results obtained by a theoretical model developed earlier, and the comparisons show very good agreement. The effects of bearing design parameters, such as static loads, dynamic displacement amplitudes, bump configurations, pivot locations, surface coatings, and lubricant were also evaluated. An understanding of the dynamic characteristics of bump foil strips resulting from this work offers designers a means for enhancing the design of high-performance compliant foil bearings.

Hydrodynamic journal bearings are essential components of high-speed machinery. In severe operating conditions, the thermal dissipation is not a negligible phenomenon. Therefore, a three-dimensional thermohydrodynamic (THD) analysis has been developed that includes lubricant rupture and re-formation phenomena by conserving the mass flowrate. Then, the predictions obtained with the proposed numerical model are validated by comparison with the measurements reported in the literature. The effects of various geometric factors (length, diameter and radial clearance) and operating conditions (rotational speed, applied load and lubricant) on the journal bearing behaviour are analysed and discussed in order to inform bearing designers. Thus, it can be predicted that the bearing performance obtained highly depends on operating conditions and geometric configuration.

This paper presents the results of an investigation into the theoretical and experimental performance of oil lubricated journal bearings. DNV has developed a new calculation tool for the analysis of journal bearing performance as part of shaft alignment analysis. The results of the calculation tool have been compared to other research and analysis methods under static and dynamic conditions. In addition, white metal bearings were tested with decreasing Sommerfeld number until loss of hydrodynamic lubrication. The experiments were carried out in a bearing test rig and with three different lubricants, normal mineral oil, emulsifying oil, and water-soluble oil. The tests were done with increasing water content in the lubricant. Results from the test were compared with calculation using the DNV analysis tool.

A theoretical analysis has been carried out to determine the stability of rigid rotor supported on two symmetrical finite two-layered porous oil journal bearings. The stability curves have been drawn for different eccentricity ratios and Sommerfeld numbers. The effect of bearing feeding parameter, L/D ratio on the stability is also investigated. This paper also deals with a theoretical investigation of stability using a non-linear transient method. This analysis gives the journal centre locus and from this the system stability can be determined. With the help of graphics, several trajectories of the journal centre have been obtained for different operating conditions. Finally a comparison between single-layered porous bearing and the two-layered porous bearing is presented here.

The cogeneration, or the combined production of electric (and/or mechanical) and thermal energy, is a well established technology, which has important environmental benefits and it has been noted by the European Community as one of the first elements to save primary energy, to avoid network losses and to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, the study will be focused on the micro-cogeneration process with micro-combined heat and power system, or MCHP (electric power output ≤ 15 kW), which represents a valid and interesting application of this technology applicable, above all, to residential and light commercial users. This paper presents the Energy, Economic and Environmental (3-E) analysis of a natural gas-fired MCHP in combination with an electric heat pump (EHP). The 3-E analysis of the MCHP/EHP begins with the results of a detailed experimental activity developed in a test facility [1] for a wide range of conditions. Two operating conditions were simulated: a heating mode with co-production of electric and thermal energy, and a cooling mode with co-production of electric, thermal and cooling energy (tri-generation). The annual operating performance, also based on the typical features of the Italian market, is also discussed with a simplified approach.
