This paper presents a metamorphic kinematic pair extracted from origami folds in the context of mechanisms, its evolved metamorphic chain, and the novel metamorphic parallel mechanism. This paper starts from the generic issues of topological representation for metamorphic mechanism, leading to unified elementary matrix operation for presentation of topological variation. Phase matrix and augmented adjacency matrix are developed to present the topological state and geometry of metamorphic mechanism in an evolutionary process. The metamorphic kinematic pair has the ability of changing mobility to generate different motion patterns based on mobility change correlated with the link annex induced topological phase change. This paper then investigates topological variation of the metamorphic chain and the topological subphases are enumerated in accordance with structure evolution. Using the metamorphic chain as chain-legs, a multiloop metamorphic mechanism with ability of performing phase change and orientation switch is constructed. The disposition of constraints and geometric constraints induced bifurcated motion are analyzed based on screw theory. The topological variation of the metamorphic parallel mechanism is addressed and the foldability is verified by physical device.

This paper proposes the concept of full configuration state of metamorphic mechanism. Based on the concept, the configuration synthesis principle of metamorphic parallel mechanism is put forward. Firstly, a metamorphic parallel mechanism in full configuration state is synthesized, and then full configuration state evolves into a specific configuration state by increasing constraints or decreasing degrees of freedom. A reconfigurable moving platform based on the triple symmetric Bricard spatial closed-loop mechanism with a single degree of freedom is proposed. Based on this, a new method for switching motion configuration states of the metamorphic parallel mechanism is constructed. According to the configuration synthesis principle presented above, a novel metamorphic parallel mechanism that can switch between three- and four-degree-of-freedom is synthesized, and then the triple symmetric Bricard spatial closed-loop mechanism is used as the reconfigurable moving platform (that is, the reconfigurable foot of a walking robot) of the metamorphic mechanism, and thus, a novel metamorphic parallel leg mechanism is created. The screw theory is used to verify the degrees of freedom of the new type of metamorphic parallel leg. The proposed metamorphic parallel leg mechanism is expected to improve flexibility and adaptability of walking robots in unstructured environment.

Lower mobility parallel mechanisms have been developed in different structures and widely applied in industry, but still have disadvantages in various tasks and functional requirements. A 2-PrRS-PR(P)S metamorphic parallel mechanism with two working configurations and a transiting configuration is presented. First, the architecture and the way of metamorphosis about the mechanism are described in detail. The mobility of the metamorphic parallel mechanism is obtained with screw theory. Furthermore, the parasitic motions in different configurations are derived based on the geometry constraint conditions. Both the inverse kinematic problem and forward kinematic problem of the mechanism are investigated by the closed-loop equation and validated via numerical examples. Then, the velocity and acceleration in two working configurations are obtained by the derivation of the inverse kinematic problem. Finally, the reachable orientation workspaces are discussed using the three-dimensional search method in different configurations. A comparison with the 3-PRS PM without metamorphic mechanism in workspace is presented and an example of the metamorphic parallel mechanism in robotic supporting leg is presented. The above analyses provide theoretical foundations for application of this mechanism.

This paper presents a metamorphic parallel mechanism (MPM) which can switch its motion between pure translation (3T) and pure rotation (3R). This feature stems from a reconfigurable Hooke (rT) joint of which one of the rotation axes can be altered freely. More than that, based on the reconfiguration of the rT joint, workspace of both 3T and 3R motion can be tunable, and the rotation center of the 3R motion can be controlled along a line perpendicular to the base plane. Kinematics analysis is presented based on the geometric constraints of the parallel mechanism covering both 3T and 3R motion. Following this, screw theory based motion/force transmission equations are obtained, and their characteristics are investigated and linked to the singularity analysis using Jacobian matrix. Motion/force transmission indices can be used to optimize basic design parameters of the MPM. This provides reference of this mechanism for potential applications requiring 3T and 3R motion.

The actuating input selection is an important basic problem for the parallel mechanism. Based on the screw theory, the constraint screw can be got after locking a kinematic pair in any limb, which can be taken as actuating wrench acted on the moving platform of the parallel mechanism. The constraint screw matrix is composed of the structure constraint screws and the constraint screws of the actuating pairs. The reasonableness of input selection can be judged by the rank of the constraint matrix. The performance of the combinations of actuating inputs is evaluated by the condition numbers of the force constraint matrix and the torque constraint matrix respectively. The theory presented is validated by the simulation and the maching test.

Based on previous research results presented by authors, this paper proposes a novel systematic approach for structure synthesis of all parallel mechanisms (excluding Bennett mechanism etc), which is totally different from the approaches based on screw theory and based on displacement subgroup. Main characteristics of this approach are: (a) the synthesized mechanisms are non-instantaneous ones, and (b) only simple mathematical tools (vector algebra, theory of sets, etc.) are used. Main steps of this approach include: (1) Determining functional and structural requirements of the parallel mechanism to be synthesized, such as position and orientation characteristic (POC) matrix, degree of freedom (DOF), etc. (2) Type synthesis of branches. (3) Assembling of branches (determining the geometry constraint conditions among the branches attached between the moving platform and the frame, and checking the DOF). (4) Identifying the inactive joints. (5) Selecting the actuating joints. In order to illustrate the whole procedure, the type synthesis of spherical parallel mechanisms is studied using this approach.

This paper presents the kinematic analyses of a 5-DOF 3-RCRR parallel mechanism. The end-effector of this mechanism can rotate round rotation center and one reference point on it can translate in a plane parallels to the base platform. Since the traditional Kutzbach-Gru¨bler formula is not valid for this mechanism, the modified Kutzbach-Gru¨bler formula and screw theory are used in the mobility analysis. The Duffy’s spherical analytic theory is used in forward/reverse position analyses. In forward/reverse velocity/acceleration analyses, virtual mechanism principle is used to build a virtual parallel mechanism (3-PvRCRR), which is equivalent to the initial mechanism (3-RCRR) on kinematics if all rates of virtual pairs (Pv) are set to be zero. At the end, some kinematics curves are presented with a numerical example.

This paper deals with the dimensional synthesis of a novel parallel manipulator for medical applications. This parallel mechanism has a novel 2T2R mobility derived from the targeted application of needle manipulation. The kinematic design of this 2T2R manipulator and its novelty are illustrated in relation to the percutaneous procedures. Due to the demanding constraints on its size and compactness, achieving a large workspace especially in orientation, is a rather difficult task. The workspace size and kinematic constraint analysis are considered for the dimensional synthesis of this 2T2R parallel mechanism. A dimensional synthesis algorithm based on the screw theory and the geometric analysis of the singularities is described. This algorithm also helps to eliminate the existence of voids inside the workspace. The selection of the actuated joints is validated. Finally, the dimensions of the structural parameters of the mechanism are calculated for achieving the required workspace within the design constraints of size, compactness and a preliminary prototype without actuators is presented.

This paper presents the explicit mapping relations between topological structure of parallel mechanism and position and orientation characteristic (in short, POC) of its motion output link. It deals with: (1) The symbolic representation and the invariant of topological structure of mechanism; (2) The matrix representation of POC of motion output link; (3) The POC equations of parallel mechanism and its symbolic operation rules. The symbolic operation involves simple mathematic tools and fewer operation rules, and has clear geometrical meaning. So, it is easy to use. The forward operation of the POC equations can be used for structural analysis; its inverse operation can be used for structural synthesis. The method proposed in this paper is totally different from the methods based on screw theory and based on displacement subgroup.
