Design Implementation of the Intercooler System of the WR-21

This paper describes the design implementation of the Intercooler System of the WR-21 Intercooled Recuperated Gas Turbine Engine (ICR). The Intercooler System extracts heat from the gas exiting the Intermediate Pressure Compressor (IPC) by means of on-engine, air-to-liquid heat exchangers. The heat transfer liquid is 50/50 ethylene glycol/water (EG). The heat is carried out of the engine by the EG to an off-engine EG-to-seawater heat exchanger. The seawater ultimately dumps the heat into the sea. The ICR is designed primarily for ship application where space is at a premium. Three design innovations that provide solutions to operational and emergency problems, resulting in a compact off-engine skid assembly will be introduced. 1. A system design that will handle pump shut downs and allow engine operation while the intercooler is isolated (bypass mode) — without putting the liquid system outside the enclosure under pressure. 2. A reservoir that is vented to atmosphere, that is only about 130 gallons in volume, that provides make-up and allows flow of 800–1000 US gpm (3000–3785 l/min) without causing turbulence in the reservoir. 3. A device that removes slugs of air trapped in the system during initial fill-up and continually deaerates the system.

Heat transfer improvement is the main parameter in a heat exchanging equipment. Few methods to increase the coefficient of heat transfer is by creating the turbulence in heat exchanging elements and changing the heat transfer fluids. For current analysis of tube heat exchangers, tape inserts containing balls are implemented with nano-fluids in Carbon Nano Tubes (CNT) and ethylene glycol. 3D modelling and simulation of twisted tape heat exchanger with balls were carried out using Solidworks and ANSYS Workbench. Heat transfer rate, friction factor, temperature difference in the heat exchangers, Reynolds number and Nusselt number variations are assessed in this work.

Significant advances have been made in compact liquid-liquid heat exchangers in the recent past, such as the brazed plate heat exchanger with enhanced plate geometries. However, additional improvements in heat exchanger performance may be realized by incorporating impinging jet flow rather than flow parallel to the heat exchange surface. It has been recognized for some time that highly efficient heat transfer over large areas can be attained using impinging jets with nearby drains, but no design model is available for this configuration. This paper presents a relatively simple theory for the heat transfer performance of jet-drain arrays based on the concept of transient heat transfer to the liquid. This theory is verified by comparison to experimental data. Next, the design and implementation of a liquid-liquid heat exchanger based on jet-drain arrays is presented and the performance of this novel device is directly compared with that of a brazed-plate heat exchanger. In addition, computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to design an enhanced impingement plate that virtually eliminates interactions between neighboring jets, further improving performance. Using the theory developed in this paper, very high performance compact liquid-liquid heat exchangers can be designed with relatively large orifices (approx. 1 mm), allowing for low pressure loss and the ability to pass a significant amount of solids through without clogging.

The Crude Preheat Train (CPT) is a set of large heat exchangers which recover the waste heat from product streams back to preheat the crude oil. The overall heat transfer coefficient in these heat exchangers may be significantly reduced due to fouling. One of the major impacts of fouling in CPT operation is the reduced heat transfer efficiency. The objective of this paper is to develop a predictive model using statistical methods which can a priori predict the rate of the fouling and the decrease in heat transfer efficiency in a heat exchanger in a crude preheat train. This predictive model will then be integrated into a preventive maintenance diagnostic tool to plan the cleaning of the heat exchanger to remove the fouling and bring back the heat exchanger efficiency to their peak values. The fouling model was developed using historical plant operating data and is based on Neural Network. Results show that the predictive model is able to predict the shell and tube outlet temperatures with excellent accuracy, where the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) obtained is less than 1%, correlation coefficient R2 of approximately 0.98 and Correct Directional Change (CDC) values of more than 90%. A preliminary case study shows promising indication that the predictive model may be integrated into a preventive maintenance scheduling for the heat exchanger cleaning.

Helically coiled heat exchangers are globally used in various industrial applications for their high heat transfer performance and compact size. Nanofluids can provide excellent thermal performance of this type of heat exchangers. In the present study, the effect of different nanofluids on the heat transfer performance in a helically coiled heat exchanger is examined. Four different types of nanofluids CuO/water, Al2O3/water, SiO2/water, and ZnO/water with volume fractions 1 vol.% to 4 vol.% was used throughout this analysis and volume flow rate was remained constant at 3 LPM. Results show that the heat transfer coefficient is high for higher particle volume concentration of CuO/water, Al2O3/water and ZnO/water nanofluids, while the values of the friction factor and pressure drop significantly increase with the increase of nanoparticle volume concentration. On the contrary, low heat transfer coefficient was found in higher concentration of SiO2/water nanofluids. The highest enhancement of heat transfer coefficient and lowest friction factor occurred for CuO/water nanofluids among the four nanofluids. However, highest friction factor and lowest heat transfer coefficient were found for SiO2/water nanofluids. The results reveal that, CuO/water nanofluids indicate significant heat transfer performance for helically coiled heat exchanger systems though this nanofluids exhibits higher pressure drop.

The processed wood industry urgently needs a dryer to improve the quality of its production. One of the important components in a dryer is a heat exchanger. To support a durable heat transfer process, a superior material is needed. The aim of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of the application of cross-flow flat plate heat exchangers to be used in wood dryers and compare the materials used and simulate heat transfer on cross-flow flat plate heat exchangers using Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations. The results showed that there was a variation in the temperature out of dry air and gas on the flat plate heat exchanger and copper material had a better heat delivery by reaching the temperature out of dry air and gas on the flat plate type heat exchanger of successive cross flow and.   overall heat transfer coefficient value and the effectiveness value of the heat exchanger of the heat transfer characteristics that occur with the cross-flow flat plate type heat exchanger in copper material of 251.74725 W/K and 0.25.

Abstract The shell and coil heat exchangers are commonly used in heating, ventilation, nuclear industry, process plant, heat recovery and air conditioning systems. This type of recuperators benefits from simple construction, the low value of pressure drops and high heat transfer. In helical coil, centrifugal force is acting on the moving fluid due to the curvature of the tube results in the development. It has been long recognized that the heat transfer in the helical tube is much better than in the straight ones because of the occurrence of secondary flow in planes normal to the main flow inside the helical structure. Helical tubes show good performance in heat transfer enhancement, while the uniform curvature of spiral structure is inconvenient in pipe installation in heat exchangers. Authors have presented their own construction of shell and tube heat exchanger with intensified heat transfer. The purpose of this article is to assess the influence of the surface modification over the performance coefficient and effectiveness. The experiments have been performed for the steady-state heat transfer. Experimental data points were gathered for both laminar and turbulent flow, both for co current- and countercurrent flow arrangement. To find optimal heat transfer intensification on the shell-side authors applied the number of transfer units analysis.


Heat exchangers are prominent industrial applications where engineering science of heat transfer and Mass transfer occurs. It is a contrivance where transfer of energy occurs to get output in the form of energy transfer. This paper aims at finding a solution to improve the thermal performance in a heat exchanger by using passive method techniques. This experimental and numerical analysis deals with finding the temperature outlets of cold and hot fluid for different mass flow rates and also pressure drop in the tube and the annular side by adding an elliptical leaf strip in the pipe at various angles. The single elliptical leaf used in experiment has major to minor axes ratios as 2:1 and distance of 50 mm between two leaves are arranged at different angular orientations from 0 0 to 1800 with 100 intervals. Since it’s not possible to find the heat transfer rates and pressure drops at every orientation of elliptical leaf so a generalized regression neural network (GRNN) prediction tool is used to get outputs with given inputs to avoid experimentation. GRNN is a statistical method of determining the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The values obtained from experimentation and GRNN nearly had precise values to each other. This analysis is a small step in regard with encomiastic approach for enhancement in performance of heat exchangers

Abstract Shell and Tube heat exchangers are having special importance in boilers, oil coolers, condensers, pre-heaters. They are also widely used in process applications as well as the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. The robustness and medium weighted shape of Shell and Tube heat exchangers make them well suited for high pressure operations. The aim of this study is to experiment, validate and to provide design suggestion to optimize the shell and tube heat exchanger (STHE). The heat exchanger is made of acrylic material with 2 baffles and 7 tubes made of stainless steel. Hot fluid flows inside the tube and cold fluid flows over the tube in the shell. 4 K-type thermocouples were used to read the hot and cold fluids inlet and outlet temperatures. Experiments were carried out for various combinations of hot and cold water flow rates with different hot water inlet temperatures. The flow conditions are limited to the lab size model of the experimental setup. A commercial CFD code was used to study the thermal and hydraulic flow field inside the shell and tubes. CFD methodology is developed to appropriately represent the flow physics and the procedure is validated with the experimental results. Turbulent flow in tube side is observed for all flow conditions, while the shell side has laminar flow except for extreme hot water temperatures. Hence transition k-kl-omega model was used to predict the flow better for transition cases. Realizable k- epsilon model with non-equilibrium wall function was used for turbulent cases. Temperature and velocity profiles are examined in detail and observed that the flow remains almost uniform to the tubes thus limiting heat transfer. Approximately 2/3 rd of the shell side flow does not surround the tubes due to biased flow contributing to reduced overall heat transfer and increased pressure loss. On the basis of these findings an attempt has been made to enhance the heat transfer by inducing turbulence in the shel l side flow. The two baffles were rotated in opposite direction to each other to achieve more circulation in the shell side flow and provide more contact with tube surface. Various positions of the baffles were simulated and studied using CFD analysis and th e results are summarized with respect to heat transfer and pressure loss.

The three-dimensional model of heat exchangers with continuous helical baffles was built. The fluid flow dynamics and heat transfer of shell side in the helical baffled heat exchanger were simulated and calculated. The velocity, pressure and temperature distributions were achieved. The simulation shows that with the same baffle pitch, shell-side heat transfer coefficient increased by 25% and the pressure drop decreases by 18% in helical baffled heat exchanger compared with segmental helical baffles. With the analyzing of the flow and heat transfer in heat exchanger in 5 different inclination angles from 11°to 21°, it can be found that both shell side heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop will reduce respectively by 86% and 52% with the increases 11°to 21°of the inclination angles. Numerical simulation provided reliable theoretical reference for further engineering research of heat exchanger with helical baffles.
