Hyper-Can: An Automated Design and Analysis Tool for Packaging-Specific Applications

Abstract The objective of beverage and food can design is to minimize cost while maintaining structural integrity. The package must satisfy requirements of internal pressure, drop pressure, and axial column load. Finite element analysis allows the designer to examine these structural constraints before prototypes are created so a larger design space can be examined in a shorter time. Hyper-Can was created as a tool in the Macintosh environment to automate the design and analysis process and reduce the design cycle time in a user-friendly way. Hyper-Can contains templates or families of designs of standard beverage and food can ends and bodies that calculate geometric information for finite element analysis pre-processing and fill and metal volume calculation using external Fortran code. Hyper-Can allows the designer to manipulate a standard design from the conceptual stage to analysis utilizing a simple graphical interface on the Macintosh.

Abstract The finite element method, which is a numerical discretization technique for obtaining approximate solutions to complex physical problems, is accepted in many industries as the primary tool for structural analysis. Computer graphics is an essential ingredient of the finite element analysis process. The use of interactive graphics techniques for analysis of tires is discussed in this presentation. The features and capabilities of the program used for pre- and post-processing for finite element analysis at GenCorp are included.

Abstract Because the structural integrity of brake systems and tires can be related to the temperature, this work proposes a transient heat transfer finite element analysis (FEA) model to study the overheating in drum brake systems used in trucks and urban buses. To understand the mechanics of overheating, some constructive variants have been modeled regarding the assemblage: brake, rims, and tires. The model simultaneously studies the thermal energy generated by brakes and tires and how the heat is transferred and dissipated by conduction, convection, and radiation. The simulated FEA data and the experimental temperature profiles measured with thermocouples have been compared giving good correlation.

This research investigated the lattice structure fabricated using corn husk fibre reinforced recycled polystyrene composite using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The material’s properties of this composite material were obtained from previous study. Then, the lattice structure of lattice structure was created using Creo® software and the FEA simulation was done by ANSYS software. In this study, the lattice structures were created using triangular prism and hexagonal prism. The analysis was divided into two conditions: 1) lattice structure with different prism shape and similar surface area, 2) lattice structure with varies of strut thickness and 3) lattice structure with different prism shape and similar lattice parameter. The results show the lattice structure with triangular prism have more structural integrity than hexagonal prism. Then, lattice structure with triangular prism can be built with lesser material but stronger and stiffer than lattice structure with hexagonal prism.

Today, the offshore oil and gas and wind power industry is a heavily regulated segment, and current standards have established restrictions which yield a very limited weather window for submarine cable installations due to experience with cable failure in bad weather. There are two main limiting factors in current practice during cable installation of an S-lay configuration: the design criterion for the minimum allowable radius of curvature in the touch down point and the avoidance of axial compression in the touch down zone. Accurate assessment of the cable integrity during offshore installation has drawn great attention and is related to the existing available analysis and design tools. The main purpose of this paper is to develop and propose a quick and easy custom-made analysis tool, which is able to export similar results as sophisticated finite element analysis software. The developed tool utilizes analytical equations of a catenary-type submarine structure extended to account for varying cross-sections with different weights and/or stiffnesses, as is the real practice. A comparative study is presented in this paper to evaluate the significance for the modeling of the “out of water” cable segment required for accurate safety factor quantification during a laying operation. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed tool are proven through a validation study comparing the results and the computational effort and time with commercial finite element analysis software. The analysis error in the case of not modeling the “out of water” cable part is significant, especially in shallow water areas, which proves the importance of using the proposed analysis tool.

With the advancement of technology, aiming for achieving a greater lightness and smaller size of 3C products, parts processing technology not only needs to explore the basic scientific theory of materials but also needs to discuss the process of deep drawing numerical and the plastic deformation. This study is based on the square shape of the deep drawing numerical simulation, and aluminum alloy plastic flow stress was input into the finite element method for simulation of plastic deformation in the aluminum alloy friction, mold clamping force, and frequency, as well as amplitude in the influence of forming mechanism and the drawing ratio of aluminum alloy. Finite element analysis software has the function of grid automatic rebuild, which can rebuild the broken grid in the analysis into a complete grid shape, which can avoid the divergence caused by numerical calculation in the analysis process. The greater the obtained error value, the best plastic parameters can be found.

The dynamic characteristics analysis about the jet pipe electro-hydraulic servo valve based on experience and mathematical derivation was difficult and not so precise. So we have analysed the armature feedback components, torque motor and jet pipe receiver in electrohydraulic servo valve by sophisticated finite element analysis tools respectively and have got physical meaning data on these parts. Then the data were fitted by Matlab and the mathematical relationships among them were calculated. We have done the dynamic multi-physical fields’ Simulink co-simulation using above mathematical relationship, and have got the input-output relationship of the overall valve, the frequency response and step response. This work can show the actual working condition accurately. At the same time, we have considered the materials and the impact of the critical design dimensions in the finite element analysis process. It provides some new ideas to the overall design of jet pipe electro-hydraulic servo valve.

This paper deals with the design and analysis of a horizontal thermal actuator common in MEMS applications using Finite Element Analysis; with the objective of exploring means to improve its sensitivity. The influence of variables like voltage and the dimensions of the cold arm of the actuator unit were examined by comprehensive, coupled thermal-stress analyses. Simulation results from this study showed that the sensitivity of the actuator increases with the applied voltage as well as the width of the cold arm of the thermal actuator. An important observation made from this study is that the size and thermal boundary conditions at the fixed end of the actuator primarily control the stroke and the operating temperature of the actuator for a given potential difference between cold and hot arms. The coupled field analyses also provided a design tool for maximizing the service voltage and dimensional variables without compromising the thermal or structural integrity of the actuator.

This paper presents design, modeling, and analysis of satellite model used for remote sensing. A detailed study is carried out for the design and modeling of the satellite structure focusing on the factors such as the selection of material, optimization of shape and geometry, and accommodation of different subsystems and payload. The center of mass is required to be kept within the range of (1-2) cm from its geometric center. Once the model is finalized it is required to be analyzed by the use ofAnsys, a tool for finite element analysis (FEA) under given loading and boundary conditions. Static, modal, and harmonic analyses inAnsysare performed at the time of ground testing and launching phase. The finite element analysis results are also validated and compared with the theoretical predictions. These analyses are quite helpful and suggest that the satellite structure does not fail and retains its structural integrity during launch environment.
