Abstract The enumeration of epicyclic gear mechanisms in the form of graphs gives rise to the need of a methodology for reverse transformation, that is, for constructing the mechanisms from graphs. This paper addresses the issue by discretizing an epicyclic gear mechanism into Fundamental Geared Entities. Further, these geared entities are shown to be a conglomeration of four primitives; namely, the carrier, sun, ring, and the planet gear. An algorithm is formulated to create the entities from a graph by using these primitives. The entities are then connected together to form a mechanism.

A new methodology for the enumeration of feasible clutching sequences for a given epicyclic gear mechanism (EGM) is presented using the kinematic nomographs of epicyclic-type transmission mechanisms. From such nomographs, the kinematic characteristics of an epicyclic gear mechanism can be expressed in terms of the gear ratios of its gear pairs. From a single nomograph, the angular velocities for all of the coaxial links can be estimated and compared directly without specifying the exact size of each gear. In addition, the angular velocities can be arranged in a descending sequence without using complicated artificial intelligence or algorithmic techniques. Then, a procedure for the enumeration of feasible clutching sequences associated with a transmission mechanism composed of two or more fundamental gear entities (FGEs) is developed. The reliability of the methodology is established by applying it to two transmission gear trains for which solutions are either fully or partially available in the literature. In the process, an incomplete in the results reported in previous literature is brought to light. And the root cause of this incompleteness is explored. The present methodology is judged to be more efficient for enumeration of all feasible clutching sequences of an EGM.

The cycloidal speed reducer, or cycloid drive, is an epicyclic gear train in which the profile of the planet gear is an epitrochoid and the annular sun gear has rollers as its teeth. The cycloid drive has very high efficiency and small size, in comparison with a conventional gear mechanism, making it an attractive candidate for limited space applications. On the other hand, in this type of transmissions there exist two major drawbacks, namely, backlash and torque ripple. Backlash, the angle through which the output shaft can rotate when the input shaft is held fixed, has a degrading effect on the output accuracy. Torque ripple, the variation in mechanical advantage as the input shaft rotates, causes vibrations and could lead to dynamic instability of the machinery. If the cycloid drive were manufactured to the ideal dimensions, there would be no backlash nor torque ripple. However, in reality, there will always be some machining tolerances. In this paper an analytical model is developed which models the cycloid drive with machining tolerances. Consequently, the effect of machining tolerances on backlash and torque ripple are investigated. It is found that both the backlash and the torque ripple are inherent periodic functions of the input crank angle.

A multi-speed bicycle transmission hub includes a geared speed-changing mechanism for providing different speed ratios and a gear-shifting mechanism for controlling the gear stage. This paper focuses on the embodiment design of a mechanical gear-shifting mechanism with a rotary configuration used in a 16-speed transmission hub for bicycles. A 16-link, five-degrees of freedom (DOF) split-power epicyclic gear mechanism, which consists of a gear differential and four sets of parallel-connected basic planetary gear trains, is introduced. Based on the clutching sequence table, a systematic design process is developed to come up with the embodiment design of the gear-shifting mechanism. A feasible and compact 16-speed rear transmission hub for bicycles is presented.

Abstract This paper presents a methodology for the identification of a most promising clutching sequence associated with an epicyclic-type automatic transmission mechanism. First, a methodology for the analysis of torque distribution on the links of an epicyclic gear mechanism is described. Then, the power loss relations associated with various clutching sequences of an epicyclic gear mechanism are derived. Finally, a procedure for the selection of a most efficient clutching sequence associated with a transmission mechanism is developed.

A new methodology for constructing multi-axes nomographs is developed. Using this methodology, a unified general formulation for computing velocities and torques of any epicyclic-type transmission train is presented. To demonstrate and apply the new technique, Ravigneaux automatic transmission is used to show how the velocities, the torques and the power flow through the train can be simultaneously visualized on a single nomograph. The present methodology is judged to be more efficient than other methods and than the three-ax nomograph methodology. Using this methodology an innovative design of two-input transmission with only one electric motor/generator (MG) and without any rotating clutches is presented. The proposed design provides some of the benefits and flexibility of a power-split design by using the conventionally available Ravigneaux gear train in a simpler mechanical layout which makes the design compact, mechanically simple, and operationally flexible.

The transmission system on the vehicle is divided into manual and automatic transmission. Both have different oil and oil functions. Automatic motorcycle oil serves to lubricate the engine and as a conductor of the transmission gear mechanism. This study aims to determine the effect of temperature rise and what percentage changes in automatic motorcycle oil viscosity figure. Research on the effect of temperature on the viscosity number of some types of automatic motorcycle oil has been done. Testing is done by viscometer of falling ball. Measurements were carried out at a temperature of 27 and a temperature of 85 . From the results of several types of motorcycle oil research automatically. Viscosity Enduro Matic SAE 10W-30 is 0.0346 poise, Top 1 Action Matic SAE 10W-40 is 0.0240 poise, BM 1 Matic SAE 10W- 30 is 0.0240 poise, Federal Matic SAE 10W-30 is 0.0191 poise, Motul Scooter SAE 10W-30 Is 0.0193 poise and Castrol Activ Matic SAE 10W-30 is 0.0213 poise. Percentage of Decrease is Enduro Matic SAE 10W-30 3.26%, Top 1 Action Matic SAE 10W-40 3.02%, BM 1 Matic SAE 10W-30 3.4%, Federal Matic SAE 10W-30 3.5%, Motul Scooter SAE 10W-30 3.44% And Castrol Activ Matic SAE 10W-30 3.2%.

A new methodology for enumeration of feasible clutching sequences of epicyclic gear mechanism (EGM) composed of two or more fundamental gear entities is presented. The method relies on previous work on algorithmic technique. It improves on existing techniques used for automatic transmission mechanisms in its ability to accurately solve the kinematics of geared mechanisms and estimating their velocity ratios and arranging them in a descending order in a simpler manner without depending on certain gear sizes. Twelve velocity-ratio-relations are derived for any four coaxial links of an epicyclic gear train. These velocity-ratio-relations are three more than the nine relations given in literature. In addition, the velocity ratios can be arranged in a descending sequence without using complicated artificial intelligence technique or complicated computer algorithm. The present methodology is judged to be more efficient for enumeration of all feasible clutching sequences of an EGM.
