The promise of large-scale use of renewables such as wind and solar for supplying electrical power is tempered by the sources’ transient behavior and the impact this would have on the operation of the grid. One way of addressing this is through the use of supplemental energy storage. While the technology for the latter has not been proven on a large scale or to be economical at the present time, some assessments of what magnitude is required can be made. In performing this work we have used NREL’s Solar Advisor Model (SAM 2010) with TMY3 solar data to estimate the photovoltaic system power generation. Climatic conditions close to load centers were chosen for the simulations. Then the PV output for varying sizes of arrays were examined and the impact of varying amounts of storage investigated. The storage was characterized by maximum limiting energy and power capacities based on annual hourly peak load, as well as its charging and discharging efficiencies. The simulations were performed using hourly time steps with energy withdrawn from, or input to, storage only after considering base generation and the PV system output in serving the grid load. In this work, we examined the load matching capability of solar PV generation (orientated for maximum summer output) for a sample Southwestern US utility grid load of 2008. Specifically we evaluated the daily and seasonal peak load shifting with employing varying storage capacities. The annual average energy penetration based on the usable solar PV output is also examined under these conditions and at different levels of system flexibility.

Decarbonisation, energy security and expanding energy access are the main driving forces behind the worldwide increasing attention in renewable energy. This paper focuses on the solar photovoltaic (PV) technology because, currently, it has the most attention in the energy sector due to the sharp drop in the solar PV system cost, which was one of the main barriers of PV large-scale deployment. Firstly, this paper extensively reviews the technical challenges, potential technical solutions and the research carried out in integrating high shares of small-scale PV systems into the distribution network of the grid in order to give a clearer picture of the impact since most of the PV systems installations were at small scales and connected into the distribution network. The paper reviews the localised technical challenges, grid stability challenges and technical solutions on integrating large-scale PV systems into the transmission network of the grid. In addition, the current practices for managing the variability of large-scale PV systems by the grid operators are discussed. Finally, this paper concludes by summarising the critical technical aspects facing the integration of the PV system depending on their size into the grid, in which it provides a strong point of reference and a useful framework for the researchers planning to exploit this field further on.

PV power plants have been recently installed in very large scale. So the effects of the solar eclipse are of big importance especially for grid connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. There was a partial solar eclipse in Prague on 20th March 2015. We have evaluated the data from our facility in order to monitor the impact of this natural phenomenon on the behavior of PV system, and these results are presented in the paper. The behavior of PV system corresponds with the theoretical assumption. The power decrease of the PV array corresponds with the relative size of the solar eclipse.I-Vcharacteristics of the PV panel correspond to the theoretical model presented in our previous work.

The electrical energy demand is steadily growing, and hence, the integration of photovoltaic system to the distribution networks is also dramatically increasing though it has a significant effect on the network’s power quality. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of solar PV integration on the power quality of distribution networks. The study is conducted using ETAP software, taking one of the radial distribution networks available in Bahir Dar city during the peak of connected loads which has the least voltage profile. Furthermore, the optimal location of the PV in the network is done using particle swarm optimization. Accordingly, the appropriate location of the PV system is determined to be the farthest end bus (bus 34). Also, the impact in terms of voltage and current harmonic distortion on the distribution feeder network is comparatively discussed by comparing the distribution system parameters with different penetration levels of solar PV system. The simulation results obtained demonstrate that high harmonic distortion level is injected correspondingly as the penetration capacity of PV system increased which indicates that the solar PV system should be integrating only up to a maximum possible capacity the network can carry. The integration of the PV system beyond this maximum penetration level causes production of high harmonic distortion which adversely affects the system performance. At the maximum penetration level which allows the acceptable harmonic distortion limit, the total voltage harmonic distortion and current demand distortion are found to be 4.97% and 14.98%, respectively.

This paper presents a detailed theoretical study of photovoltaic (PV) systems and their operation using the MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) method and presents the simulation of photovoltaic modules validated by computer software simulation followed by an experimental setup of MATLAB R2017a. The first approach to build the performance of a photovoltaic solar panel is to use a maximum power point tracker in rapidly changing climatic conditions and use a DC-DC converter to maximize the output power. This framework can operate at the maximum power point MPP and produces its highest power in different irradiance conditions when the solar panels are partially shaded. The main perspectivesis design and simulation of a simple but efficient charge controller by utilizing maximum power point tracker for photovoltaic system and analysis results show that this MPPT system with perturb & observe (P&O) method and the DCDC Boost converter can significantly increase the efficiency and the performance of PV.

Power generation faces a major challenge in meeting peak load requirements. Energy suppliers are highly dependent on fossil fuels due to the limited resources of non-renewable energy production. Therefore, researchers and scientists are looking for distributed generators (DGs) to provide additional power during peak periods of the energy curve. Solar energy gives them an extra twist to meet the load demand during this time. As a result, the grid-based solar photovoltaic (PV) system is attracting particular attention from researchers and industry in order to reduce the burden of fossil fuel power generation. Single-stage and two-stage photovoltaic systems are suitable for grid connection with or without battery holder. This article provides a comprehensive overview of a grid connected solar system. The entire architecture of the on-grid photovoltaic system includes the construction of a photovoltaic generator, MPPT methods and DC-DC converters.

Malaysia is rapidly expanding the generation capacity of solar power through large scale solar (LSS) projects with the aim to achieve 20% renewable energy mix by 2025. This has motivated many solar industry players to explore the usage of solar PV with single axis tracker (SAT) system. However, many are still hesitant due to the lack of understanding on the comparative performance between fixed mounted solar PV with solar PV with SAT system. This paper aims to provide a comparative analysis on the performance of both systems. Simulation using PVSyst 6.83 was performed in five potential LSS sites spread across Peninsular Malaysia in Perlis, Kelantan, Pahang, Selangor and Johor with the same installed capacity of 10.32MWp. The energy yield and capacity factor for 21 years were simulated. On the average, it was found that SAT outperforms fixed mounted solar PV system by 15.08% based on their performance on their first year operation.

Abstract Although solar energy is abundant, accessible, affordable, and ecologically and environmentally friendly, in rural Ethiopia, the majority of Households are still using pollutant kerosene for lighting. The researcher assess factors that influence dissemination activities, like solar PV installation practices, house and institutional system distribution strategies, system failures, and their causes. Additionally, The researcher analyzed the impact of PV orientation, comparing the simulation results currently performed by the PVsyst software with different angles observed during the sphere survey. This made it possible to influence the dissemination activity factors and, therefore, the best orientation. The study also assessed how access to alter, maintenance, lack of public awareness building, institutional problems, tariffs, and lack of a market could affect PV system access and large-scale distribution. To distribute a sufficient amount of solar PV across the country, this study recommends that consideration of distribution impact factors be considered in the most negligible levels to realize maximum results. The PV system could be a tilt at angles of 160 and 00 azimuths; supported by this method, the PV system can collect a mean of 5.36 kW/m2daily, which implies 1929.6 kW/m2/year. This was the vision that the researcher wish to possess a sustainable supply of energy within the country and reduce emissions from biomass. Thus, adapting standard design practices of mathematical formulas, experimental and PVsyst methods through numerical simulation is critical to identifying ways to enhance the efficiency and reliability of stand-alone PV power systems for further practicality within the region.

The impact of the installation of a large-scale photovoltaic (PV) system to the electric power grid management is analyzed numerically in this series of works. In this part 1, the solar irradiance at the target country, Guatemala, is evaluated with a weather forecasting model, and PV energy potential is estimated. From the computed potential distribution, the appropriate area for installation of a large-scale PV system is selected. This area is where the solar irradiance is large and the energy consumption regions are close by. The optimal tilted angle of the PV panels is proposed as well from the PV output simulation. The time series data of the PV output is also evaluated in this part, and it will be applied to the analysis of the impact of the PV installation to the electric power grid management in the following part of this series of works.

The paper analyzes a case study of the impact of changing the nominal power ratio (NPR) on the efficiency of a PV (photovoltaic) system located in Poland. In the first stage of the research, the acceptable range of variability for NPR was determined based on simulation calculations, taking into account the parameters of PV modules, inverter, and climatic conditions. The second stage was verification tests for two acceptable extreme cases, carried out based on the analysis of detailed data from the monitoring of PV installations. The results of the verification tests for the two considered periods of operation of the PV system with the change of the NPR coefficient from 82% to 98% resulted in an increase in the annual energy yield by 446.2 kWh. On the other hand, higher relative values of generated energy were obtained only for the months with the lowest insolation in December and in January by 8.2 and 6.04 kWh/kWp, respectively. Higher oversizing of the PV generator (for NPR = 82%) also resulted in an increase by 6.4% in the frequency of operation of the PV inverter in the largest power range (2250–2500 W) and a decrease by 3.7% in the frequency in the lowest power range (0–250 W) for the whole year.
