Experimental Study for the Effect of Vaned Diffuser Leading Edge on the Noise Generated From a Centrifugal Fan

This paper studies a novel vaned diffuser with inclined leading edge to reduce the fan noise. The aerodynamic performances and sound pressure level (SPL) of the centrifugal fan with five different diffusers were measured in an anechoic chamber, and the inclined angles of the five diffusers are 45°, 60°, 120°, 135° and 150°, respectively. The flow coefficient of the fan varies from 0.037 to 0.14, the rotational speed ranges from 20000rpm to 35000rpm. The test results show that, by using diffuser vanes with inclined leading edge, the overall noise of the fan is reduced in the experimental conditions, and it has the minimum value at the flow rate coefficient of 0.084. The overall noise reduction of 5.3dB was made with the diffuser leading edge inclined angle of 150°.

An experimental and numerical study to explore the noise reduction mechanism for the inclined leading edge vaned diffuser in centrifugal fans is described. Inclined leading edge vaned diffuser is useful in improving fan performance, increasing operating range, and reducing fan noise. The generation of fan noise is related to the pressure fluctuation on the diffuser vane surface, particularly the leading edge. Numerical results show that pressure fluctuation on the inclined leading edge vaned diffuser surface remarkably decreases, unlike that of the original diffuser. The pressure fluctuation is dominated by the components at the blade passing frequency and its second harmonic.

A computational study has been conducted to analyze the performance of a centrifugal compressor under various levels of impeller-diffuser interactions. The study has been conducted using a low solidity vaned diffuser (LSVD), a conventional vaned diffuser (VD) and a vaneless diffuser (VLD). The study is carried out using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations. A commercial software ANSYS CFX is used for this purpose. The intensity of interaction is varied by keeping the diffuser vane leading edge at three different radial locations. Frozen rotor and transient simulations are carried out at four different flow coefficients. At design flow coefficient maximum efficiency occurs when the leading edge is at R3 (ratio of radius of the diffuser leading edge to the impeller tip radius) = 1.10. At lower flow coefficient higher stage efficiency occurs when the diffuser vanes are kept at R3 = 1.15 and at higher flow coefficient R3 = 1.05 gives better efficiency. It is observed that at lower flow coefficients positive incidence causes separation of flow at the suction side of the diffuser vane. When the flow rate is above design point there is a negative incidence at the leading edge of the diffuser vane which causes separation of flow from the pressure side of the diffuser vane. Compressor stage performance as well as performance of individual components is calculated at different time steps. Large variations in the stage performances at off-design flow coefficients are observed. The static pressure recovery coefficient (Cp) value is found to be varying with the relative position of impeller and diffuser. It is observed that maximum Cp value occurred at time step where Ψloss value is lowest. From the transient simulations it has been found that the strength and location of impeller exit wake affect the diffuser vane loading which in turn influences the diffuser static pressure recovery.

The unsteadiness of the flow at the leading edge of a vaned diffuser represents a source of low efficiency and instability in a centrifugal turbomachine. Furthermore, the internal flow of the impeller can be affected by asymmetric downstream conditions, which results in extra flow unsteadiness and instabilities. Numerical and experimental data are obtained. The simulation of impeller diffuser interaction is performed using CFX-Tascflow. A frozen rotor simulation is used for the steady calculation and a rotor-stator simulation is used for the unsteady calculation using the steady results as an initial guess. The unsteady simulation is done not only for one impeller and diffuser blades, but also for the whole impeller and diffuser blades using Unix workstation. For the experimental work, a transparent fan is design and tested at The Turbomachinery Laboratory of SJTU. The test rig consists of a centrifugal, shrouded impeller, diffuser and volute casing all made of plexiglass. A particle image velocimeter (PIV) is used to measure the 2-D instantaneous velocity in the interaction region between impeller, vaned. A series of performance measurements were carried out at different speeds. The first trial of measuring the instantaneous flow field in a part of the impeller and vaned diffuser together at different relative locations between them is presented in this work at different flow rates. Obtaining detailed measurements in the interaction region between the impeller and diffuser can help in understanding the complex flow phenomena and improving centrifugal fan and compressor performance. Finally, the comparison between the unsteady measurements and unsteady calculations showed that the Rotor/Stator Model can predict the basic characteristics of unsteady flow in centrifugal fan but still need improvement to satisfy the true transient simulation for unsteady impeller diffuser interaction.

This paper presents a design strategy for very low flow coefficient multistage compressors operating with supercritical CO2 for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). At flow coefficients less than 0.01, the stage efficiency is much reduced due to dissipation in the gas-path and more prominent leakage and windage losses. Instead of using a vaneless diffuser as is standard design practice in such applications, the current design employs a vaned diffuser to decrease the meridional velocity and to widen the gas path. The aim is to achieve a step change in performance. The impeller exit width is increased in a systematic parameter study to explore the limitations of this design strategy and to define the upper limit in efficiency gain. The design strategy is applied to a full-scale reinjection compressor currently in service. Three-dimensional, steady, supercritical CO2 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the full stage with leakage flows are carried out with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) real gas model. The design study suggests that a nondimensional impeller exit width parameter b2* = (b2/R)ϕ of six yields a 3.5 point increase in adiabatic efficiency relative to that of a conventional compressor design with vaneless diffuser. Furthermore, it is shown that in such stages the vaned diffuser limits the overall stability and that the onset of rotating stall is likely caused by vortex shedding near the diffuser leading edge. The inverse of the nondimensional impeller exit width parameter b2* can be interpreted as the Rossby number. The investigation shows that, for very low flow coefficient designs, the Coriolis accelerations dominate the relative flow accelerations, which leads to inverted swirl angle distributions at impeller exit. Combined with the two-orders-of-magnitude higher Reynolds number for supercritical CO2, the leading edge vortex shedding occurs at lower flow coefficients than in air suggesting an improved stall margin.

This paper reviews test results from a rotatable low solidity vaned diffuser (RLSD). The device was installed in a single stage test vehicle consisting of a pseudo-return channel inlet, a subsonic centrifugal impeller (approx. 2:1 pressure ratio), the rotatable diffuser, a return channel and a dump collector. Static taps, total pressure probes, and thermocouples were located in critical areas throughout the stage. Manual traverse probes measured the pressure and angle profiles at RLSD leading and trailing edges. Results for various stagger angles, leading edge radius ratios, etc. are presented in terms of pressure recovery (Cp) and loss coefficient (LC). Comments are made regarding the applicability of the RLSD in production units.

In this work, an experimental study about the influence of some geometric features on the aeroacoustic behavior of a squirrel-cage fan, used in automotive air conditioning units, has been carried out. The study focused on the effect of both the shape and the position of the volute tongue on the noise generated by the fan. Different geometric configurations were tested in order to compare the results. First of all, the performance curves were measured in a standardized test facility. Then, the acoustic behavior of the fan was characterized by means of acoustic pressure measurements near the fan inlet. The comparison of the test results indicated a great dependence of both the shape and the position of the volute tongue and the noise generation. In particular, some geometric configurations of the volute tongue were able to reduce the fan noise generation without reducing the fan performance.

Turbopumps operating at reduced flow rates experience significant separation and backflow phenomena. Although Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approaches proved to be usually able to capture the main flow features at design working conditions, previous numerical studies in the literature verified that eddy-resolving techniques are required in order to simulate the strong secondary flows generated at reduced loads. Here, highly resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) of a radial pump with a vaned diffuser are reported. The results are compared to particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments in the literature. The main focus of the present work is to investigate the separation and backflow phenomena occurring at reduced flow rates. Our results indicate that the effect of these phenomena extends up to the impeller inflow: they involve the outer radii of the impeller vanes, influencing significantly the turbulent statistics of the flow. Also in the diffuser vanes, a strong spanwise evolution of the flow has been observed at the reduced load, with reverse flow, located mainly on the shroud side and on the suction side (SS) of the stationary channels, especially near the leading edge of the diffuser blades.

Leading edge serration is now a well-established and effective passive control device for the reduction of turbulence–leading edge interaction noise, and for the suppression of boundary layer separation at high angle of attack. It is envisaged that leading edge blowing could produce the same mechanisms as those produced by a serrated leading edge to enhance the aeroacoustics and aerodynamic performances of aerofoil. Aeroacoustically, injection of mass airflow from the leading edge (against the incoming turbulent flow) can be an effective mechanism to decrease the turbulence intensity, and/or alter the stagnation point. According to classical theory on the aerofoil leading edge noise, there is a potential for the leading edge blowing to reduce the level of turbulence–leading edge interaction noise radiation. Aerodynamically, after the mixing between the injected air and the incoming flow, a shear instability is likely to be triggered owing to the different flow directions. The resulting vortical flow will then propagate along the main flow direction across the aerofoil surface. These vortical flows generated indirectly owing to the leading edge blowing could also be effective to mitigate boundary layer separation at high angle of attack. The objectives of this paper are to validate these hypotheses, and combine the serration and blowing together on the leading edge to harvest further improvement on the aeroacoustics and aerodynamic performances. Results presented in this paper strongly indicate that leading edge blowing, which is an active flow control method, can indeed mimic and even enhance the bio-inspired leading edge serration effectively.

Surge is measured in a low-speed radial compressor with a vaned diffuser. For this system, the flow coefficient at surge is determined. This coefficient is a measure for the inducer inlet flow angle and is found to increase with increasing rotational speed. Moreover, the frequency and amplitude of the pressure oscillations during fully-developed surge are compared with results obtained with the Greitzer lumped parameter model. The measured surge frequency increases when the compressor mass flow is throttled to a smaller flow rate. Simulations show that the Greitzer model describes this relation reasonably well except for low rotational speeds. The predicted amplitude of the pressure rise oscillations is approximately two times too small when deep surge is met in the simulations. For classic surge, the agreement is worse. The amplitude is found to depend strongly on the shape of the compressor and throttle characteristic, which are not accurately known.
