Measurements of Adiabatic Film and Overall Cooling Effectiveness on a Turbine Vane Pressure Side With a Trench

Film cooling performance is typically quantified by separating the external convective heat transfer from the other components of the conjugate heat transfer that occurs in turbine airfoils. However, it is also valuable to assess the conjugate heat transfer in terms of the overall cooling effectiveness, which is a parameter of importance to airfoil designers. In the current study, adiabatic film effectiveness and overall cooling effectiveness values were measured for the pressure side of a simplified turbine vane model with three rows of showerhead cooling at the leading edge and one row of body film cooling holes on the pressure side. This was done by utilizing two geometrically identical models made from different materials. Adiabatic film effectiveness was measured using a very low thermal conductivity material, and the overall cooling effectiveness was measured using a material with a higher thermal conductivity selected such that the Biot number of the model matched that of a turbine vane at engine conditions. The theoretical basis for this matched-Biot number modeling technique is discussed in some detail. Additionally, two designs of pressure side body film cooling holes were considered in this study: a standard design of straight, cylindrical holes and an advanced design of “trenched” cooling holes in which the hole exits were situated in a recessed, transverse trench. This study was performed using engine representative flow conditions, including a coolant-to-mainstream density ratio of DR = 1.4 and a mainstream turbulence intensity of Tu = 20%. The results of this study show that adiabatic film and overall cooling effectiveness increase with blowing ratio for the showerhead and pressure side trenched holes. Performance decreases with blowing ratio for the standard holes due to coolant jet separation from the surface. Both body film designs have similar performance at a lower blowing ratio when the standard hole coolant jets remain attached. Far downstream of the cooling holes both designs perform similarly because film effectiveness decays more rapidly for the trenched holes.

Numerical calculation of conjugate heat transfer was carried out to study the effect of combined film and swirl cooling at the leading edge of a gas turbine vane with a cooling chamber inside. Two cooling chambers (C1 and C2 cases) were specially designed to generate swirl in the chamber, which could enhance overall cooling effectiveness at the leading edge. A simple cooling chamber (C0 case) was designed as a baseline. The effects of different cooling chambers were studied. Compared with the C0 case, the cooling chamber in the C1 case consists of a front cavity and a back cavity and two cavities are connected by a passage on the pressure side to improve the overall cooling effectiveness of the vane. The area-averaged overall cooling effectiveness of the leading edge () was improved by approximately 57%. Based on the C1 case, the passage along the vane was divided into nine segments in the C2 case to enhance the cooling effectiveness at the leading edge, and was enhanced by 75% compared with that in the C0 case. Additionally, the cooling efficiency on the pressure side was improved significantly by using swirl-cooling chambers. Pressure loss in the C2 and C1 cases was larger than that in the C0 case.

Film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer were measured in squealer tip configurations on the blade tip surface. Three different shelf squealer tip geometries were studied: conventional, vertical, and inclined. The experiment was carried out in a wind tunnel with an inlet mainstream Reynolds number, based on the axial chord length of the blade, of 140,000. The experiments were conducted in five blades in linear cascade with an averaged turbulence intensity of 8.5%. The film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient on the tip surface were obtained using the transient IR thermography technique. For the pressure side film cooling holes, averaging blowing ratios (M) of 1.0 and 2.0 were set. The results showed the film cooling effectiveness distributions on the tip surface. Owing to the mainstream, the cooling effect appeared after x/Cx = 0.15 and the film cooling effectiveness tended to increase toward downstream of the trailing edge. Additionally, the heat transfer distributions were investigated regarding the film cooling holes. In the presence of film cooling holes, the heat transfer distribution had more uniformity than without them on the pressure side. As the blowing ratio increased from 1 to 2, the heat transfer was decreased on the tip surface. The heat transfer ratio represented the change of heat transfer distribution with and without film cooling holes. Those of results were compared in three squealer tip geometries. The overall area-averaged net heat flux reduction (NHFR) levels on the tip surface were enhanced as the blowing ratio increased. The NHFR of the shelf squealer tip configurations was better than that with the conventional squealer tip.

Numerical computations were conducted to simulate flyash deposition experiments on gas turbine disk samples with internal impingement and film cooling using a CFD code (FLUENT). The standard k-ω turbulence model and RANS were employed to compute the flow field and heat transfer. The boundary conditions were specified to be in agreement with the conditions measured in experiments performed in the BYU Turbine Accelerated Deposition Facility (TADF). A Lagrangian particle method was utilized to predict the ash particulate deposition. User-defined subroutines were linked with FLUENT to build the deposition model. The model includes particle sticking/rebounding and particle detachment, which are applied to the interaction of particles with the impinged wall surface to describe the particle behavior. Conjugate heat transfer calculations were performed to determine the temperature distribution and heat transfer coefficient in the region close to the film-cooling hole and in the regions further downstream of a row of film-cooling holes. Computational and experimental results were compared to understand the effect of film hole spacing, hole size and TBC on surface heat transfer. Calculated capture efficiencies compare well with experimental results.

Abstract This work is an experimental study of film cooling effectiveness on a blade tip in a stationary, linear cascade. The cascade is mounted in a blowdown facility with controlled inlet and exit Mach numbers of 0.29 and 0.75, respectively. The free stream turbulence intensity is measured to be 13.5 % upstream of the blade’s leading edge. A flat tip design is studied, having a tip gap of 1.6%. The blade tip is designed to have 15 shaped film cooling holes along the near-tip pressure side (PS) surface. Fifteen vertical film cooling holes are placed on the tip near the pressure side. The cooling holes are divided into a 2-zone plenum to locally maintain the desired blowing ratios based on the external pressure field. Two coolant injection scenarios are considered by injecting coolant through the tip holes only and both tip and PS surface holes together. The blowing ratio (M) and density ratio (DR) effects are studied by testing at blowing ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 and three density ratios of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. Three different foreign gases are used to create density ratio effect. Over-tip flow leakage is also studied by measuring the static pressure distributions on the blade tip using the pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measurement technique. In addition, detailed film cooling effectiveness is acquired to quantify the parametric effect of blowing ratio and density ratio on a plane tip design. Increasing the blowing ratio and density ratio resulted in increased film cooling effectiveness at all injection scenarios. Injecting coolant on the PS and the tip surface also resulted in reduced leakage over the tip. The conclusions from this study will provide the gas turbine designer with additional insight on controlling different parameters and strategically placing the holes during the design process.

Data from conical-shaped film cooling holes is extremely sparse in open literature, especially the cooling uniformity characteristic, an important criterion for evaluating any film cooling design. The authors will compare the performance of conical-shaped holes to cylindrical-shaped holes. Cylindrical-shaped holes are often considered a baseline in terms of film cooling effectiveness and cooling uniformity coefficient. The authors will study two coupons with conical-shaped holes, which have 3° and 6° diffusion angles, named CON3 and CON6 respectively. A conjugate heat transfer computational fluid dynamics model and an experimental wind tunnel will be used to study these coupons. The three configurations: cylindrical baseline, CON3, and CON6, have a single row of holes with an inlet metering diameter of 3mm, length-to-nominal diameter of 4.3, and an injection angle of 30°. In this study, the authors will also take into account the heat transfer into the coolant flow from the coolant channel. In other words, coolant temperature at the exit of the coolant hole will be different than that measured at the inlet, and the conjugate heat transfer model will be used to correct for this difference. For the numerical model, the realizable k-ε turbulent model will be applied with a second order of discretization and enhanced wall treatment to provide the highest accuracy available. Grid independent studies for both cylindrical-shaped film cooling holes and conical-shaped holes will be performed and the results will be compared to data in open literature as well as in-house experimental data. Results show that conical-shaped holes considerably outperform cylindrical-shaped holes in film cooling effectiveness at all blowing ratios. In terms of cooling uniformity, conical-shaped holes perform better than cylindrical-shaped holes for low and mid-range blowing ratios, but not at higher levels.

Experiments were conducted to determine the film cooling effectiveness and convective heat transfer coefficient distributions on the endwall of a large-scale turbine vane passage. The vane test models employed simulated the passage geometry and upstream cooling slot geometry of a typical first stage turbine. The test models were constructed of low thermal conductivity foam and foil heaters. The tests were conducted at a typical engine Reynolds number but at lower than typical Mach numbers. The film cooling effectiveness distribution for the entire endwall and the heat transfer distribution for the downstream one-half of the endwall were characterized by large gapwise variations which were attributed to a secondary flow vortex.

ABSTRACTAdvanced cooling techniques involving internal enhanced heat transfer and external film cooling and thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are employed for gas turbine hot components to reduce metal temperatures and to extend their lifetime. A deeper understanding of the interaction mechanism of these thermal protection methods and the conjugate thermal behaviours of the turbine parts provides valuable guideline for the design stage. In this study, a conjugate heat transfer model of a turbine vane endwall with internal impingement and external film cooling is constructed to document the effects of TBCs on the overall cooling effectiveness using numerical simulations. Experiments on the same model with no TBCs are performed to validate the computational methods. Round and crater holes due to the inclusion of TBCs are investigated as well to address how film-cooling configurations affect the aero-thermal performance of the endwall. Results show that the TBCs have a profound effect in reducing the endwall metal temperatures for both cases. The TBC thermal protection for the endwall is shown to be more significant than the effect of increasing coolant mass flow rate. Although the crater holes have better film cooling performance than the traditional round holes, a slight decrement of overall cooling effectiveness is found for the crater configuration due to more endwall metal surfaces directly exposed to external mainstream flows. Energy loss coefficients at the vane passage exit show a relevant negative impact of adding TBCs on the cascade aerodynamic performance, particularly for the round hole case.

Over the last decade, conjugate heat transfer testing has been shown to be important because it replicates the sum of the hot gas path heat transfer coefficient, film cooling, film cooling heat transfer augmentation, bore cooling, conduction through the wall, internal cooling heat transfer coefficients, and the relative amounts of heat pick up in the cooling flow. Instead of measuring these boundary conditions in individual experiments, conjugate heat transfer testing measures the cumulative effect as well as each boundary condition’s effect on the others. Typically, matched Biot number heat transfer experiments are performed at near room temperature with a surrogate material; however, this study examines how the thermal conductivity of a nickel alloy sufficiently changes between room temperature and temperatures representative of turbine engines to allow matched Bi heat transfer tests using nickel at laboratory conditions. The ratio of the thermal conductivity of air to the thermal conductivity of Inconel 718 stays mostly constant between engine representative temperatures and room temperature. Over this range, the thermal conductivity of both air and Inconel 718 change ∼2.5X, and the change in thermal conductivity allows for conjugate heat transfer tests to match Reynolds number, Nusselt number, film effectiveness, Biot number, and Stanton number. Experimental results at two temperature conditions are shown confirming the theory. Finally, a method for scaling the thermal impact of dust accumulation at laboratory conditions to turbine conditions is proposed.

The laminated cooling or multi-layered impingement-effusion cooling, which originates from combustor liner cooling, combines impingement jet, rib-roughed and film cooling and results in a high overall cooling effectiveness. It’s believed to be a promising gas turbine blade cooling technique. In this paper, conjugate heat transfer analysis that has been validated by the experimental results was carried out for five laminated cooling models with different surface curvatures at a certain range of blowing ratio. The numerical results show that the curvature and blowing ratio have crucial effects on laminated cooling effectiveness. High blowing ratio results in a better overall cooling effectiveness for flat plate and concave surface, while the moderate blowing ratio performances better on convex surface. Film cooling has an interaction with the internal convective and impingement cooling, thus the optimal cooling effectiveness of laminated cooling is achieved at the condition that the improvement of internal cooling counteracts the deterioration of film cooling, instead of the condition that film cooling or internal cooling reaches the maximum respectively. Moreover, concave surfaces have the higher pressure loss in the whole range of blowing ratio, while convex surfaces have lower pressure loss than flat plate due to the turbulence intensity of external flow.
