Enhanced Film Cooling Effect Downstream of a Cylindrical Hole Using SDBD and DBD-VGs Plasma Actuations

Abstract Effects of SDBD and DBD-VGs plasma actuations on film cooling performance of a plain wall were numerically investigated based on the RANS solutions and linearized body force model. With a user defined function (UDF), the plasma actuation forces were implemented into the momentum equations as the source terms in the commercial CFD solver ANSYS Fluent. With the experiment data and referenced numerical results, reliabilities of the linearized body force model and numerical methods were validated. At a range of dimensionless actuation strengths and frequencies, the film cooling effectiveness on the wall surface and flow structure development in the near-wall regions were analyzed and compared with the plasma-off case. The results show that both SDBD and DBD-VGs plasma actuations are beneficial for reducing the development of kidney vortex pair downstream of the cooling hole, thus significantly improving the film cooling effect on the wall surface. With SDBD plasma actuation, the streamwise velocity gradient in near-wall region is increased compared with the plasma-off case, resulting in delayed coolant flow lifting-off downstream of the cooling hole. However, with DBD-VGs plasma actuation, the development of anti-kidney vortex pair is intensified, which in turn weakens the development of kidney vortex pair and widens the coolant coverage on the wall surface along lateral direction. As the actuation strength and frequency increase, the film cooling effectiveness on the wall surface is enhanced along both streamwise and lateral directions. Compared with the plasma-off case, the area-averaged film cooling effectiveness for DBD-VGs plasma actuation case is increased by 331% at dimensionless actuation frequency of 2.5 and dimensionless actuation strength of 30, whereas for SDBD plasma actuation case the area-averaged film cooling effectiveness is only increased by 42.8% at dimensionless actuation frequency of 2.5 and dimensionless actuation strength of 60. With the same actuation parameters, compared against the SDBD case, a higher film cooling effectiveness is achieved on wall surface for the DBD-VGs plasma actuation case, and the coolant coverage along the lateral direction is significantly improved by DBD-VGs plasma actuation.

This paper presents a method to improve the film-cooling effectiveness of cylindrical holes. A short crescent-shaped block is placed at the downstream of a cylindrical cooling hole. The block shape is defined by a number of geometric parameters including block height, length and width, etc. The single row hole on a flat plate with inclination angle of 30 deg, pitch ratio of 3, and length-diameter ratio of 6.25 was chosen as the baseline test case. Film-cooling effectiveness for the cylindrical hole with or without the downstream short crescent-shaped block was measured by using the pressure sensitive paint (PSP) technique. The density ratio of coolant (argon) to mainstream air is 1.38. The blowing ratios vary from 0.5 to 1.25. The results showed that the lateral averaged cooling effectiveness is increased remarkably when the downstream block is present. The downstream short block allows the main body of the coolant jet to pass over the block top and to form a new down-wash vortex pair, which increases the coolant spread in the lateral direction. The effects of each geometrical parameter of the block on the film-cooling effectiveness were studied in detail.

Film cooling has been extensively used to provide thermal protection for the external surface of the gas turbine blades. Numerous number of film cooling holes designs and arrangements have been introduced. The main motivation of these designs and arrangements are to reduce the lift-off effect cause by the counter rotating vortices (CRVP) produce by cylindrical cooling hole. One of the efforts is the introduction of newly found anti-vortex film cooling design. The present study focuses on anti-vortex holes arrangement consists of a main hole and pair of smaller holes. All three holes share a common inlet with the outlet of the smaller holes varies base on it relative position towards the main hole. Three anti-vortex holes arrangements have been considered; downstream anti-vortex hole arrangement (DAV), lateral anti-vortex hole arrangement (LAV), and upstream anti-vortex hole arrangement (UAV). In addition, a single hole (SH) film cooling has also been considered as the baseline. The investigation make used of ANSYS CFX software ver. 14. The investigations are made through Reynolds Average Navier Stokes analyses with the application of shear k-ε turbulence model. The results show that the anti-vortex designs produce significant improvement in term of film cooling effectiveness and distribution. The LAV arrangement shows the best film cooling effectiveness distribution among all considered cases and is consistent for all blowing ratios (BR). The results also unveil the formation of new vortex pair on both side of the primary hole CRVP. Interaction between the new vortices and the main CRVP structure reduce the lift off explaining the increased lateral film effectiveness.

In modern gas turbines, film cooling technology is essential for the protection of hot parts. Today, shaped holes are widely used, but besides others, the NEKOMIMI-shaped cooling holes have shown that there is still potential to increase the film cooling effectiveness significantly by generation of Anti-Counter-Rotating Vortices (ACRV). Within the past decade, the technology has been improved step by step at B&B-AGEMA and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd.; mainly by means of numerical simulations. The laterally averaged film cooling effectiveness is typically captured with acceptable accuracy, but the experimental measurements still show a deviation from the numerically obtained results with respect to the local film cooling effectiveness distribution behind the film cooling hole. Nevertheless, the film cooling air spread out in the lateral direction is one of the keys for enhancement of the film cooling performance. Thus, more precise simulations are consequently necessary for improvement of the hole shape configuration. The present study involves simulations of a baseline fan shaped hole configuration (“777 hole” investigated by Schroeder and Thole [1][2]) using different turbulence models available in STAR-CCM+ with isotropic and anisotropic turbulence consideration (constitutive relations). Distinct differences with respect to flow phenomena (detachments and vortex creation) can be observed depending on the applied turbulence model. In total, the results show that anisotropic viscosity strongly influences the film cooling performance prediction by CFD for prediction of the film cooling effectiveness, but none of the models provides acceptable accuracy in this regard.

The need for improvements in film cooling effectiveness over traditional cylindrical film cooling holes has led to varied shaped hole and sister hole designs of increasing complexity. This paper presents a simpler shaped-hole design which shows improved film cooling effectiveness over both cylindrical holes and diffusing fan-shaped holes without the geometric complexity of the latter. Magnetic resonance imaging measurement techniques are used to reveal the coupled 3D velocity and coolant mixing from film cooling holes which are of a constant oval cross-section as opposed to round. The oval shaped hole yielded an area-averaged adiabatic effectiveness twice that of the diffusing fan-shaped hole tested. Three component mean velocity measurements within the channel and cooling hole showed the flow features and vorticity fields which explain the improved performance of the oval shaped hole. As compared to the round hole, the oval hole leads to a more complex vorticity field which reduces the strength of the main counter-rotating vortex pair. The counter-rotating vortex pair acts to lift the coolant away from the turbine blade surface and thus strongly reduces the film cooling effectiveness. The weaker vortices allow coolant to stay closer to the blade surface and to remain relatively unmixed with the main flow over a longer distance. Thus, the oval-shaped film cooling hole provides a simpler solution for improving film cooling effectiveness beyond circular hole and diffusing hole designs.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the film cooling effectiveness (FCE) and mixing flow characteristics of the flat surface ramp model integrated with a compound angled film cooling jet. Design/methodology/approach Three-dimensional numerical simulation is performed on a flat surface ramp model with Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes approach using a finite volume solver. The tested model has a fixed ramp angle of 24° and a ramp width of two times the diameter of the film cooling hole. The coolant air is injected at 30° along the freestream direction. Three different film hole compound angles oriented to freestream direction at 0°, 90° and 180° were investigated for their performance on-ramp film cooling. The tested blowing ratios (BRs) are in the range of 0.9–2.0. Findings The film hole oriented at a compound angle of 180° has improved the area-averaged FCE on the ramp test surface by 86.74% at a mid-BR of 1.4% and 318.75% at higher BRs of 2.0. The 180° film hole compound angle has also produced higher local and spanwise averaged FCE on the ramp test surface. Originality/value According to the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to investigate the ramp film cooling with a compound angle film cooling hole. The improved ramp model with a 180° film hole compound angle can be effectively applied for the end-wall surfaces of gas turbine film cooling.

Large Eddy Simulations were performed to study the effect of a micro-ramp on an inclined turbulent jet interacting with a cross-flow in a film-cooling configuration. The micro-ramp vortex generator is placed downstream of the film-cooling jet. Changes in vortex structure and film-cooling effectiveness are evaluated and the genesis of the counter-rotating vortex pair in the jet is discussed. Results are reported with the jet modeled using a plenum/pipe configuration. This configuration was designed based on previous wind tunnel experiments at NASA Glenn Research Center, and the present results are meant to supplement those experiments. It is found that the micro-ramp improves film-cooling effectiveness by generating near-wall counter-rotating vortices which help entrain coolant from the jet and transport it to the surface. The pair of vortices generated by the micro-ramp are of opposite sense to the vortex pair embedded in the jet.

Most studies of turbine airfoil film cooling in laboratory test facilities have used relatively large plenums to feed flow into the coolant holes. However, a more realistic inlet condition for the film cooling holes is a relatively small channel. Previous studies have shown that the film cooling performance is significantly degraded when fed by perpendicular internal crossflow in a smooth channel. In this study, angled rib turbulators were installed in two geometric configurations inside the internal crossflow channel, at 45 deg and 135 deg, to assess the impact on film cooling effectiveness. Film cooling hole inlets were positioned in both prerib and postrib locations to test the effect of hole inlet position on film cooling performance. A test was performed independently varying channel velocity ratio and jet to mainstream velocity ratio. These results were compared to the film cooling performance of previously measured shaped holes fed by a smooth internal channel. The film cooling hole discharge coefficients and channel friction factors were also measured for both rib configurations with varying channel and inlet velocity ratios. Spatially averaged film cooling effectiveness is largely similar to the holes fed by the smooth internal crossflow channel, but hole-to-hole variation due to inlet position was observed.

This paper presents detailed measurements of the film-cooling effectiveness for three single, scaled-up film-cooling hole geometries. The hole geometries investigated include a cylindrical hole and two holes with a diffuser shaped exit portion (i.e. a fanshaped and a laidback fanshaped hole). The flow conditions considered are the crossflow Mach number at the hole entrance side (up to 0.6), the crossflow Mach number at the hole exit side (up to 1.2), and the blowing ratio (up to 2). The coolant-to-mainflow temperature ratio is kept constant at 0.54. The measurements are performed by means of an infrared camera system which provides a two-dimensional distribution of the film-cooling effectiveness in the nearfield of the cooling hole down to x/D = 10. As compared to the cylindrical hole, both expanded holes show significantly improved thermal protection of the surface downstream of the ejection location, particularly at high blowing ratios. The laidback fanshaped hole provides a better lateral spreading of the ejected coolant than the fanshaped hole which leads to higher laterally averaged film-cooling effectiveness. Coolant passage crossflow Mach number and orientation strongly affect the flowfield of the jet being ejected from the hole and, therefore, have an important impact on film-cooling performance.
