Three Dimensional Numerical Modelling of Staggered Tube Bundle Turbulent Crossflow in Duct

A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the three dimensional (3D) staggered tube bundle turbulent cross flow confined between two parallel flat plates using RNG k-ε model and standard wall function utilizing commercial code FLUENT. The maximum Reynolds numbers of 1000, 5000, and 50000 and the distance between plates of H = 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm have been considered. The arrangement of the staggered tube bundle is fix with geometrical characteristics of Sn/D = 1.5 and Sp/D = 1.2 which has been found optimum in previous two-dimensional studies. The constant temperature of 360K on tubes, constant inlet flow and plates’ temperature of 300K have been set as the boundary conditions. The global Nusselt number, friction factor for the dissimilar Reynolds numbers, distance between plates, local Nusselt number and different angles on first and third tubes have been evaluated.

Direct numerical solution for flow and heat transfer past a sphere in a uniform flow is obtained using an accurate and efficient Fourier-Chebyshev spectral collocation method for Reynolds numbers up to 500. We investigate the flow and temperature fields over a range of Reynolds numbers, showing steady and axisymmetric flow when the Reynolds number is less than 210, steady and nonaxisymmetric flow without vortex shedding when the Reynolds number is between 210 and 270, and unsteady three-dimensional flow with vortex shedding when the Reynolds number is above 270. Results from three-dimensional simulation are compared with the corresponding axisymmetric simulations for Re>210 in order to see the effect of unsteadiness and three-dimensionality on heat transfer past a sphere. The local Nusselt number distribution obtained from the 3D simulation shows big differences in the wake region compared with axisymmetric one, when there exists strong vortex shedding in the wake. But the differences in surface-average Nusselt number between axisymmetric and three-dimensional simulations are small owing to the smaller surface area associated with the base region. The shedding process is observed to be dominantly one-sided and as a result axisymmetry of the surface heat transfer is broken even after a time-average. The one-sided shedding also results in a time-averaged mean lift force on the sphere.

AbstractA recent numerical study by Rao et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 717, 2013, pp. 1–29) predicted the existence of several previously unobserved linearly unstable three-dimensional modes in the wake of a spinning cylinder in cross-flow. While linear stability analysis suggests that some of these modes exist for relatively limited ranges of Reynolds numbers and rotation rates, this may not be true for fully developed nonlinear wakes. In the current paper, we present the results of water channel experiments on a rotating cylinder in cross-flow, for Reynolds numbers $200\leqslant \mathit{Re}\leqslant 275$ and non-dimensional rotation rates $0\leqslant \alpha \leqslant 2. 5$. Using particle image velocimetry and digitally post-processed hydrogen bubble flow visualizations, we confirm the existence of the predicted modes for the first time experimentally. For instance, for $\mathit{Re}= 275$ and a rotation rate of $\alpha = 1. 7$, we observe a subharmonic mode, mode C, with a spanwise wavelength of ${\lambda }_{z} / d\approx 1. 1$. On increasing the rotation rate, two modes with a wavelength of ${\lambda }_{z} / d\approx 2$ become unstable in rapid succession, termed modes D and E. Mode D grows on a shedding wake, whereas mode E consists of streamwise vortices on an otherwise steady wake. For $\alpha \gt 2. 2$, a short-wavelength mode F appears localized close to the cylinder surface with ${\lambda }_{z} / d\approx 0. 5$, which is presumably a manifestation of centrifugal instability. Unlike the other modes, mode F is a travelling wave with a spanwise frequency of ${\mathit{St}}_{3D} \approx 0. 1$. In addition to these new modes, observations on the one-sided shedding process, known as the ‘second shedding’, are reported for $\alpha = 5. 1$. Despite suggestions from the literature, this process seems to be intrinsically three-dimensional. In summary, our experiments confirm the linear predictions by Rao et al., with very good agreement of wavelengths, symmetries and the phase velocity for the travelling mode. Apart from this, these experiments examine the nonlinear saturated state of these modes and explore how the existence of multiple unstable modes can affect the selected final state. Finally, our results establish that several distinct three-dimensional instabilities exist in a relatively confined area on the $\mathit{Re}$–$\alpha $ parameter map, which could account for their non-detection previously.

Mixing in pipe junctions can play an important role in exciting force and distribution of flow in pipe network. This paper investigated the cross pipe junction and proposed an improved plan, Y-shaped pipe junction. The numerical study of a three-dimensional pipe junction was performed for calculation and improved understanding of flow feature in pipe. The filtered Navier–Stokes equations were used to perform the large-eddy simulation of the unsteady incompressible flow in pipe. From the analysis of these results, it clearly appears that the vortex strength and velocity non-uniformity of centerline, can be reduced by Y-shaped junction. The Y-shaped junction not only has better flow characteristic, but also reduces head loss and exciting force. The results of the three-dimensional improvement analysis of junction can be used in the design of pipe network for industry.

In this work, a numerical study has been performed to simulate the heat transfer and fluid flow in a transonic high-pressure turbine stator vane passage. Four turbulence models (the Spalart-Allmaras model, the low-Reynolds-number realizable k-ε model, the shear-stress transport (SST) k-ω model and the v2-f model) are used in order to assess the capability of the models to predict the heat transfer and pressure distributions. The simulations are performed using the FLUENT commercial software package, but also two other codes, the in-house code VolSol and the commercial code CFX are used for comparison with FLUENT results. The results of the three-dimensional simulations are compared with experimental heat transfer and aerodynamic results available for the so-called MT1 turbine stage. It is observed that the predictions of the vane pressure field agree well with experimental data, and that the pressure distribution along the profile is not strongly affected by choice of turbulence model. It is also shown that the v2-f model yields the best agreement with the measurements. None of the tested models are able to predict transition correctly.

In this work we study numerically the three-dimensional turbulent natural convection in a partially heated cubic cavity filled with water containing metallic nanoparticles, metallic oxides and others based on carbon.The objective is to study and compare the effect of the addition of nanoparticles studied in water and also the effect of the position of the heated partition on the heat exchange by turbulent natural convection in this type of geometry, which can significantly improve the design of heat exchange systems for better space optimization. For this we have treated numerically for different volume fractions the turbulent natural convection in the two cases where the cavity is heated respectively by a vertical and horizontal strip in the middle of one of the vertical walls. To take into account the effects of turbulence, we used the standard turbulence model ? - ?. The governing equations are discretized by the finite volume method using the power law scheme which offers a good stability characteristic in this type of flow. The results are presented in the form of isothermal lines and current lines. The variation of the mean Nusselt number is calculated for the two positions of the heated partition as a function of the volume fraction of the nanoparticles studied in water for different Rayleigh numbers.The results show that carbon-based nanoparticles intensify heat exchange by convection better and that the position of the heated partition significantly influences heat exchange by natural convection. In fact, an improvement in the average Nusselt number of more than 20% is observed for the case where the heated partition is horizontal.

Abstract A detailed heat transfer numerical study of a three-dimensional impinging jet on a roughened isothermal surface is presented and is investigated from flow physics vantage point under the influence of different parameters. The effects of the Reynolds number, roughness location, and roughness dimension on the flow physics and heat transfer parameters are studied. Additionally, the relations between average heat transfer coefficient (AHTC) and flow physics including pressure, wall shear and flow vortices with thermodynamic nonequilibrium are offered. This paper studies the effect of varying both location and dimension of the roughness element which took the shape of square cross-sectional continuous ribs to deliver a favorable trade-off between total pressure loss and heat transfer rate. The roughness element was tested for three different radial locations (R/D) = 1, 1.5, and 2 and at each location its height (i.e., width) (e) was changed from 0.25 to 1 mm in incremental steps of 0.25. The study used a jet angle (α) of 90 deg, jet-to-target distance (H/D = 6), and Re ranges from 10,000 to 50,000, where H is the vertical distance between the target plate and jet exit. The results show that the AHTC can be significantly affected by changing the geometry and dimensions of the roughness element. This variation can be either an augmentation of, or decrease in, the (HTC) when compared with the baseline case. An enhancement of 12.9% in the AHTC was achieved by using optimal location and dimensions of the roughness element at specific Reynolds number. However, a diminution between 10% and 30% in (AHTC) was attained by the use of rib height e = 1 mm at Re = 50k. The variation of both rib location and height showed better contribution in increasing heat transfer for low-range Reynolds numbers.

Three-dimensional numerical study is performed for heat transfer and resistance characteristics as well as comprehensive performance of two kinds H-type (single and double) finned tube. It is found that the heat transfer and resistance characteristics as well as comprehensive performance of H-type finned tube are influenced by the Reynolds number of gas. With the growth of Reynolds number, the air-side Nusselt number rises gradually and the heat transfer performance gets better and better, whereas the air-side Euler number drops step by step until close to a fixed value. The comprehensive performances of both single H-type finned tube and double ones are weaken progressively. When Reynolds number value is same, the convective heat transfer, pressure drop, air-side Nusselt number and Euler number of single H-type finned tube are bigger than those of double ones. The single H-type finned tube expression is much better than double ones in comprehensive performance and heat transfer.

The present work shows a numerical study of laminar, steady, and mixed convective flow inside lid-driven square cavity with intruded rectangular fin in its lower surface. The main purpose here is to maximize the heat transfer between the rectangular fin and the surrounding mixed convective flow inside a lid-driven cavity by means of constructal design. The problem is subject to two constraints, the lid-driven cavity and intruded fin areas. The ratio between the fin and cavity areas is kept fixed (ϕ = 0.05). The investigated geometry has one degree-of-freedom (DOF), the fin aspect ratio (H1/L1), which is varied in the range 0.1 ≤ H1/L1 ≤ 10. The aspect ratio of the cavity is maintained fixed (H/L = 1.0). The effect of the fin geometry over the Nusselt number is investigated for several Rayleigh (RaH = 103, 104, 105 and 106) and Reynolds numbers (ReH = 10, 102, 3.0 × 102, 5.0 × 102, 7.0 × 102 and 103). For all simulations, the Prantdl number is fixed (Pr = 0.71). The conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy are numerically solved with the finite volume method. Results showed that fin geometry (H1/L1) has strong influence over the Nusselt number in the fin. It was also observed that the effect of H1/L1 over Nusselt number changes considerably for different Rayleigh numbers and for the lowest magnitudes of Reynolds numbers, for example, differences of nearly 770% between RaH = 106 and forced convective flow were observed for the lowest Reynolds number studied (ReH = 10).

A numerical study on the flow in a three stage low pressure industrial steam turbine with conical friction bolts in the last stage and lacing wires in the penultimate stage is presented and analyzed. Structured high-resolution hexahedral meshes are used for all three stages and the meshing methodology is shown for the rotor with friction bolts and blade reinforcements. Modern three-dimensional CFD with a non-equilibrium wet steam model is used to examine the aero-thermodynamic effects of the part-span connectors. A performance assessment of the coupled blades at part load, design and overload condition is presented and compared with measurement data from an industrial steam turbine test rig. Detailed flow field analyses and a comparison of blade loading between configurations with and without part-span connectors are presented in this paper. The results show significant interaction of the cross flow vortex along the part-span connector with the blade passage flow causing aerodynamic losses. This is the first time that part-span connectors are being analyzed using a non-equilibrium wet steam model. It is shown that additional wetness losses are induced by these elements.

The three-dimensional, primitive equations of motion have been integrated numerically in time for the case of turbulent, plane Poiseuille flow at very large Reynolds numbers. A total of 6720 uniform grid intervals were used, with sub-grid scale effects simulated with eddy coefficients proportional to the local velocity deformation. The agreement of calculated statistics against those measured by Laufer ranges from good to marginal. The eddy shapes are examined, and only theu-component, longitudinal eddies are found to be elongated in the downstream direction. However, the lateralveddies have distinct downstream tilts. The turbulence energy balance is examined, including the separate effects of vertical diffusion of pressure and local kinetic energy.It is concluded that the numerical approach to the problem of turbulence at large Reynolds numbers is already profitable, with increased accuracy to be expected with modest increase of numerical resolution.
