A numerical study of three-dimensional turbulent channel flow at large Reynolds numbers

The three-dimensional, primitive equations of motion have been integrated numerically in time for the case of turbulent, plane Poiseuille flow at very large Reynolds numbers. A total of 6720 uniform grid intervals were used, with sub-grid scale effects simulated with eddy coefficients proportional to the local velocity deformation. The agreement of calculated statistics against those measured by Laufer ranges from good to marginal. The eddy shapes are examined, and only theu-component, longitudinal eddies are found to be elongated in the downstream direction. However, the lateralveddies have distinct downstream tilts. The turbulence energy balance is examined, including the separate effects of vertical diffusion of pressure and local kinetic energy.It is concluded that the numerical approach to the problem of turbulence at large Reynolds numbers is already profitable, with increased accuracy to be expected with modest increase of numerical resolution.

This paper presents a numerical study on thermal jet drilling of granite rock that is based on a thermal spallation phenomenon. For this end, a numerical method based on finite elements and a damage–viscoplasticity model are developed for solving the underlying coupled thermo-mechanical problem. An explicit time-stepping scheme is applied in solving the global problem, which in the present case is amenable to extreme mass scaling. Rock heterogeneity is accounted for as random clusters of finite elements representing rock constituent minerals. The numerical approach is validated based on experiments on thermal shock weakening effect of granite in a dynamic Brazilian disc test. The validated model is applied in three-dimensional simulations of thermal jet drilling with a short duration (0.2 s) and high intensity (approx. 3 MW m −2 ) thermal flux. The present numerical approach predicts the spalling as highly (tensile) damaged rock. Finally, it was shown that thermal drilling exploiting heating-forced cooling cycles is a viable method when drilling in hot rock mass. Abstract A detailed heat transfer numerical study of a three-dimensional impinging jet on a roughened isothermal surface is presented and is investigated from flow physics vantage point under the influence of different parameters. The effects of the Reynolds number, roughness location, and roughness dimension on the flow physics and heat transfer parameters are studied. Additionally, the relations between average heat transfer coefficient (AHTC) and flow physics including pressure, wall shear and flow vortices with thermodynamic nonequilibrium are offered. This paper studies the effect of varying both location and dimension of the roughness element which took the shape of square cross-sectional continuous ribs to deliver a favorable trade-off between total pressure loss and heat transfer rate. The roughness element was tested for three different radial locations (R/D) = 1, 1.5, and 2 and at each location its height (i.e., width) (e) was changed from 0.25 to 1 mm in incremental steps of 0.25. The study used a jet angle (α) of 90 deg, jet-to-target distance (H/D = 6), and Re ranges from 10,000 to 50,000, where H is the vertical distance between the target plate and jet exit. The results show that the AHTC can be significantly affected by changing the geometry and dimensions of the roughness element. This variation can be either an augmentation of, or decrease in, the (HTC) when compared with the baseline case. An enhancement of 12.9% in the AHTC was achieved by using optimal location and dimensions of the roughness element at specific Reynolds number. However, a diminution between 10% and 30% in (AHTC) was attained by the use of rib height e = 1 mm at Re = 50k. The variation of both rib location and height showed better contribution in increasing heat transfer for low-range Reynolds numbers.

A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the three dimensional (3D) staggered tube bundle turbulent cross flow confined between two parallel flat plates using RNG k-ε model and standard wall function utilizing commercial code FLUENT. The maximum Reynolds numbers of 1000, 5000, and 50000 and the distance between plates of H = 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm have been considered. The arrangement of the staggered tube bundle is fix with geometrical characteristics of Sn/D = 1.5 and Sp/D = 1.2 which has been found optimum in previous two-dimensional studies. The constant temperature of 360K on tubes, constant inlet flow and plates’ temperature of 300K have been set as the boundary conditions. The global Nusselt number, friction factor for the dissimilar Reynolds numbers, distance between plates, local Nusselt number and different angles on first and third tubes have been evaluated.

The stability of laminar and turbulent channel flow is examined for cases where Coriolis forces are introduced by steady rotation about an axis perpendicular to the plane of mean flow. Linearized equations of motion are derived for small disturbances of the Taylor type. Conditions for marginal stability in laminar Couette and Poiseuille flow correspond, in part, to the analogous solutions of buoyancy-driven convection instabilities in heated fluid layers, and to those of Taylor instabilities in the flow between rotating cylinders. In plane Poiseuille flow with rotation, the critical disturbance mode occurs at a Reynolds number of Rec= 88.53 and rotation number Ro= 0.5. At higher Reynolds numbers, unstable conditions canexist over the range of rotation numbers given by 0 < Ro< 3, provided the undisturbed flow remains laminar. A two-layer model is devised to investigate the onset of longitudinal instabilities in turbulent flow. The linear disturbance equations are solved essentially in their laminar form, whereby the velocity gradient of laminar flow is replaced by a numerically computed profile for the gradient of the turbulent mean velocity. The turbulent stress levels in the stable and unstable flow regions are represented by integrated averages of the eddy viscosity. Onset of instability for Reynolds numbers between 6000 and 35 000 is predicted to occur at Ro= 0.022, a value in remarkable agreement with the experimentally observed appearance of roll instabilities in rotating turbulent channel flow.

A numerical study is conducted to examine the vortex structure about a revolving wing in quiescent flow employing a high-fidelity, implicit large eddy simulation (ILES) technique found to be effective in simulating flows that exhibit interspersed regions of laminar, transitional, and turbulent flows. The revolving wing configuration consists of a single, aspect ratio one rectangular plate extended out a distance of 0.5 chords from the origin. Shortly after the onset of the motion, the rotating wing generates a stable and coherent vortex system across the leading edge and wing root that remains throughout the motion. The aerodynamic loads are also analyzed and found to remain mostly constant during the maneuver. Transitional effects on the vortex system are investigated over a range of Reynolds numbers (3,000 < Re < 15,000). It is found that higher Reynolds numbers promote more breakdown of the leading edge and root vortices, but do not alter the stability of the vortex system. The aerodynamic loads also show little sensitivity to Reynolds number with the higher Reynolds numbers producing only moderately higher forces. Comparisons with recent experimental PIV measurements using a PIV-like data reduction technique applied to the computational solution show very favorable agreement with the mid-span velocity and vorticity contours.

The aerodynamics of the low aspect ratio (LAR) wings is of outmost importance in the performance of the fixed-wing micro air vehicles (MAVs). The flow around these wings is widely influenced by three dimensional (3D) phenomena: including wing-tip vortices, formation of laminar bubble, flow separation and reattachment, laminar to turbulent transition or any combination of these phenomena. All the recent studies consider the aerodynamic characteristics of the LAR wings under the effect of the direct wind. Here we focus on the numerical study of the influence of cross-wind on flow over the inverse Zimmerman wings with the aspect ratios (AR) between 1 and 2 at Reynolds numbers between 6×104 and 105. We have considered cross-wind’s angles from 0° to 40° and angle of attack from 0° to 12°. The results show that lift and drag coefficient generally decrease when the angle of the cross-wind is increased.

A numerical study of three-dimensional equilibria and transition to turbulence in flow over a backward-facing step is performed using direct numerical solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical method is a high-order-accurate mixed spectral/spectral-element method with efficient viscous outflow boundary conditions. The appearance of three-dimensionality in nominally two-dimensional geometries is investigated at representative Reynolds numbers ranging from the onset of three-dimensional bifurcation to later transitional stages. Strongly three-dimensional regions are identified through standard correlation coefficients and new three-dimensionality indices, as well as through instantaneous and time-average streamline patterns and vorticity contours. Our results indicate that onset of three-dimensionality occurs at the boundaries between the primary and secondary recirculating zones with the main channel flow, the latter being the most stable flow component. There is. therefore, strong secondary instability in the shear layers, mainly due to the one emanating from the step corner.The flow further downstream is excited through the action of the upstream shear layers acquiring a wavy form closely resembling Tollmien–Schlichting waves both spatially and temporally with a characteristic frequency f1; upstream, at the shear layer another incommensurate frequency, f2, is present. The two-frequency flow locks-in to a single frequency if external excitations are imposed at the inflow at a frequency close to f1 or f2; the smaller amplitude excitations, however, may cause a strong quasi-periodic response. Such excitations may significantly increase or decrease (by more than 20%) the length of the primary separation zone XR at lock-in or quasi-periodic states. The equilibrium states resulting from the secondary instability at supercritical Reynolds numbers produce a flow modulated in the spanwise direction, with corresponding variations in the reattachment location XR. While three-dimensionality explains partially the discrepancy between numerical predictions and experimental results on XR at higher Reynolds number Re, the main source of discrepancy is attributed to the inflow conditions, and in particular to external disturbances superimposed on the mean flow, the latter being the main reason also for the somewhat earlier transition found in laboratory experiments.

AbstractA recent numerical study by Rao et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 717, 2013, pp. 1–29) predicted the existence of several previously unobserved linearly unstable three-dimensional modes in the wake of a spinning cylinder in cross-flow. While linear stability analysis suggests that some of these modes exist for relatively limited ranges of Reynolds numbers and rotation rates, this may not be true for fully developed nonlinear wakes. In the current paper, we present the results of water channel experiments on a rotating cylinder in cross-flow, for Reynolds numbers $200\leqslant \mathit{Re}\leqslant 275$ and non-dimensional rotation rates $0\leqslant \alpha \leqslant 2. 5$. Using particle image velocimetry and digitally post-processed hydrogen bubble flow visualizations, we confirm the existence of the predicted modes for the first time experimentally. For instance, for $\mathit{Re}= 275$ and a rotation rate of $\alpha = 1. 7$, we observe a subharmonic mode, mode C, with a spanwise wavelength of ${\lambda }_{z} / d\approx 1. 1$. On increasing the rotation rate, two modes with a wavelength of ${\lambda }_{z} / d\approx 2$ become unstable in rapid succession, termed modes D and E. Mode D grows on a shedding wake, whereas mode E consists of streamwise vortices on an otherwise steady wake. For $\alpha \gt 2. 2$, a short-wavelength mode F appears localized close to the cylinder surface with ${\lambda }_{z} / d\approx 0. 5$, which is presumably a manifestation of centrifugal instability. Unlike the other modes, mode F is a travelling wave with a spanwise frequency of ${\mathit{St}}_{3D} \approx 0. 1$. In addition to these new modes, observations on the one-sided shedding process, known as the ‘second shedding’, are reported for $\alpha = 5. 1$. Despite suggestions from the literature, this process seems to be intrinsically three-dimensional. In summary, our experiments confirm the linear predictions by Rao et al., with very good agreement of wavelengths, symmetries and the phase velocity for the travelling mode. Apart from this, these experiments examine the nonlinear saturated state of these modes and explore how the existence of multiple unstable modes can affect the selected final state. Finally, our results establish that several distinct three-dimensional instabilities exist in a relatively confined area on the $\mathit{Re}$–$\alpha $ parameter map, which could account for their non-detection previously.

This paper presents a numerical study of the flows in an internal combustion engine inlet manifold. The three-dimensional turbulent flows through a single branched manifold were simulated using the κ-ɛ model of turbulence. The flow structure was characterized in detail and the effects of the flow split ratio and inlet flowrate were investigated. Detailed measurements were performed to validate the numerical predictions, using laser Doppler anemometry. Good agreement was obtained between the predicted and the measured mean velocities. The predicted levels of turbulence energy are in qualitative agreement with the measurements.
