CFD Simulation of 3D Flowfield in a Gas Centrifuge

A CFD method was used to study the whole flow field in a gas centrifuge. In this paper, the VSM (Vector Splitting Method) of the FVM (Finite Volume Method) was used to solve the 3D Navier-Stokes equations. An implicit second-order upwind scheme was adopted. The numerical simulation was successfully performed on a parallel cluster computer and a convergence result was obtained. The simulation shows that: in the withdrawal chamber, a strong detached shock wave is formed in front of the scoop; as the radial position increases, the shock becomes stronger and the distance to scoop front surface is smaller. An oblique shock forms in the clearance between the scoop and the centrifuge wall; behind the shock-wave, the radially-inward motion of gas is induced because of the imbalance of the pressure gradient and the centrifugal force. In the separation chamber, a countercurrent is introduced. This indicates that CFD method can be used to study the complex three-dimensional flow field of gas centrifuges.

Background. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using medical-image-based anatomical vascular geometry are now gaining clinical relevance. This study aimed at validating the CFD methodology for studying cerebral aneurysms by using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements, with a focus on the effects of small geometric variations in aneurysm models on the flow dynamics obtained with CFD. Method of Approach. An experimental phantom was fabricated out of silicone elastomer to best mimic a spherical aneurysm model. PIV measurements were obtained from the phantom and compared with the CFD results from an ideal spherical aneurysm model (S1). These measurements were also compared with CFD results, based on the geometry reconstructed from three-dimensional images of the experimental phantom. We further performed CFD analysis on two geometric variations, S2 and S3, of the phantom to investigate the effects of small geometric variations on the aneurysmal flow field. Results. We found poor agreement between the CFD results from the ideal spherical aneurysm model and the PIV measurements from the phantom, including inconsistent secondary flow patterns. The CFD results based on the actual phantom geometry, however, matched well with the PIV measurements. CFD of models S2 and S3 produced qualitatively similar flow fields to that of the phantom but quantitatively significant changes in key hemodynamic parameters such as vorticity, positive circulation, and wall shear stress. Conclusion. CFD simulation results can closely match experimental measurements as long as both are performed on the same model geometry. Small geometric variations on the aneurysm model can significantly alter the flow-field and key hemodynamic parameters. Since medical images are subjected to geometric uncertainties, image-based patient-specific CFD results must be carefully scrutinized before providing clinical feedback.

A robust Volume of Fluid (VOF) technique is presented together with an incompressible Euler/Navier Stokes solver operating on adaptive, unstructured grids to simulate the interactions of extreme waves and three-dimensional structures. The incompressible Euler/Navier Stokes equations are solved using projection schemes and a finite element method. The classic dam-break problem has been used to validate the computer code developed based on the method described above. The numerical simulations of a three dimensional dam-break wave interacting with a single cylinder and a cylinder array have been carried out. Computational results have demonstrated that the present CFD method is capable of simulating the interactions of extreme waves and three-dimensional structures, which are of great importance for the comprehension of many natural phenomena in marine, coastal and marine engineering.

Abstract The present study investigates the flow field in a rinsing process of a beverage can numerically and experimentally. The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a finite volume method along with the volume of fluid (VOF) method for free surface. The beverage can set upside down is transported with a constant velocity and rinsed with a water jet ejected from a nozzle below the can. The case of a can at rest is also simulated. The result shows that the ejected water impinges on the can bottom and spreads along the side surface of the can. Then, as it flows down toward the can mouth, its front surface forms splashes. For the stationary can case, after the jet impinges on the can bottom, it almost evenly spreads over the side surface. The water flows downward and becomes branched flows by fingering. The time average of VOF is calculated to visualize the regions rinsed by water. For the case of a moving can, only the top region of the can is rinsed, and the ratio of the rinsed region drops to 29% from 69% for the stationary case. The computed water surfaces qualitatively agree with the experimental result, but the shape of the front surface, such as splashes and fingerings, cannot be resolved with the simulation.

The effects of circumferential distortions in inlet total pressure on the flow field in a low-aspect-ratio, high-speed, high-pressure-ratio, transonic compressor rotor are investigated in this paper. The flow field was studied experimentally and numerically with and without inlet total pressure distortion. Total pressure distortion was created by screens mounted upstream from the rotor inlet. Circumferential distortions of 8 periods per revolution were investigated at two different rotor speeds. The unsteady blade surface pressures were measured with miniature pressure transducers mounted in the blade. The flow fields with and without inlet total pressure distortion were analyzed numerically by solving steady and unsteady forms of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Steady three-dimensional viscous flow calculations were performed for the flow without inlet distortion while unsteady three-dimensional viscous flow calculations were used for the flow with inlet distortion. For the time-accurate calculation, circumferential and radial variations of the inlet total pressure were used as a time-dependent inflow boundary condition. A second-order implicit scheme was used for the time integration. The experimental measurements and the numerical analysis are highly complementary for this study because of the extreme complexity of the flow field. The current investigation shows that inlet flow distortions travel through the rotor blade passage and are convected into the following stator. At a high rotor speed where the flow is transonic, the passage shock was found to oscillate by as much as 20% of the blade chord, and very strong interactions between the unsteady passage shock and the blade boundary layer were observed. This interaction increases the effective blockage of the passage, resulting in an increased aerodynamic loss and a reduced stall margin. The strong interaction between the passage shock and the blade boundary layer increases the peak aerodynamic loss by about one percent.

The head of low-head hydropower stations is generally higher than 2.5m in the world, while micro-head hydropower resources which head is less than 2.5m are also very rich. In the paper, three-dimensional CFD method has been used to simulate flow passage of the micro-head bulb turbine. The design head and unit flow of the turbine was 1m and 3m3/s respectively. With the numerical simulation, the bulb turbine is researched by analyzing external characteristics of the bulb turbine, flow distribution before the runner, pressure distribution of the runner blade surface, and flow distribution of the outlet conduit under three different schemes. The turbine in second scheme was test by manufactured into a physical model. According to the results of numerical simulation and model test, bulb turbine with no guide vane in second scheme has simpler structure, lower cost, and better flow capacity than first scheme, which has traditional multi-guide vanes. Meanwhile, efficiency of second scheme has just little decrease. The results of three dimensions CFD simulation and test results agree well in second scheme, and higher efficiency is up to 77% which has a wider area with the head of 1m. The curved supports in third scheme are combined guide vanes to the fixed supports based on 2nd scheme. By the water circulations flowing along the curved supports which improve energy transformation ability of the runner, the efficiency of the turbine in third scheme is up to 82.6%. Third scheme, which has simpler structure and best performance, is appropriate for the development and utilization of micro-head hydropower resources in plains and oceans.

This study analyzes transient turbulent modeling of three-dimensional multiple dimpled fin array using large eddy simulation (LES). The Navier–Stokes equations as well as the energy equation were constructed by the finite volume method and then discretized to form algebraic equations, which were solved by semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equation (SIMPLE). The solutions of temperature and velocity were obtained by iterating computation until it converged within each step. This simulation places nine fins on the bottom surface of a channel and changes the height of the dimple (0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 mm) with three different levels of Reynolds number (Re) (3500, 5000, and 6500) to investigate the temperature and flow field without gravity in forced convection. The results indicate that the dimpled fin array can generate vortices between the convex/concave dimples and the fin base and increase the influences of the height of the dimple on the flow field around the fin array. The averaged time-mean of the Nusselt number (Nu) for the dimple height of 0.8 mm is higher than that of the no-dimple case up to 14.4%, while the averaged time-mean Nu for the dimple height of 1.2 mm is lower than that of the no-dimple case up to 11.6%.

In this paper, calculating fluid dynamics (CFD) method is utilized for analyzing the precision compound sand control screen internal flow field so as to establish appropriate models. During this numerical calculation, by using the - turbulence model is used to simulate the resistance characteristics under different working conditions when crude oil flows through precision compound sand control screen, analyze its speed change rule, flow path and pressure distribution, etc. The use of porous media model to simulate the resistance of the oil screen effect, the oil screen is replaced by the porous jump surface to simulate the strainer of pressure drop. To screen sand control performance and reduce the flow resistance to provide theoretical support, make the reservoir production losses to a minimum.

The complex three-dimensional flow field in a centrifugal impeller with low speed is studied in this paper. Coupled with high–Reynolds–number k–ε turbulence model, the fully three–dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations are solved. The Semi–Implicit Method for Pressure–Linked Equations (SIMPLE) algorithm is used. And the non–staggered grid arrangement is also used. The computed results are compared with the available experimental data. The comparison shows good agreement.

This paper establishes a novel mathematical model for computing the plume flow field of a carrier-based aircraft engine. Its objective is to study the impact of jet exhaust gases with high temperature, high speed and high pressure on the jet blast deflector. The working condition of the nozzle of a fully powered on engine is first determined. The flow field of the exhaust jet is then numerically simulated at different deflection angle using the three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the standard [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] turbulence method. Moreover, infra-red temperature tests are further carried out to test the temperature field when the jet blast deflector is at the [Formula: see text] deflection angle. The comparison between the simulation results and the experimental results show that the proposed computation model can perfectly describe the system. There is only 8–10% variation between them. A good verification is achieved. Moreover, the experimental results show that the jet blast deflector plays an outstanding role in driving the high-temperature exhaust gases. It is found that [Formula: see text] may be the best deflection angle to protect the deck and the surrounding equipment effectively. These data results provide a valuable basis for the design and layout optimization of the jet blast deflector and deck.
