High Temperature Diffusion of Oxygen in Chromite

Molecular dynamics was used to calculate the diffusion coefficient of oxygen over a temperature range of 900–1700K. The chromite (FeCr2O4) system used consisted of 448 ions in a spinel structure. The spinel consisted of Fe2+ in tetrahedral sites and Cr3+ ions in octahedral sites surrounded by O2− ions. Schottky defects were made in the system by removing 10 oxygen ions, 4 iron ions and 4 chromium ions. The trajectory files from the simulations were examined for oxygen movement via a vacancy hopping mechanism and the mean-squared displacement of oxygen was plotted against time. A linear fit was performed to the plots and Einstein’s relationship was used to derive the diffusion coefficient from the gradient. The diffusion coefficients were then plotted against temperature and an Arrhenius expression was fitted to the trend and compared with the experimental trend calculated by Takada & Adachi.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the role of diffusion weight MRI (DWI) in the characterization of hepatic focal lesions by using apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). Thirty patients (18 women, 12 men; mean age 48.5 years) with hepatic focal lesions were included in this study. Patients underwent DW MR imaging with the SPLICE sequence. ADC of each focal lesion carcinoma was calculated from DW MR Images obtained with low and high b values. ADCs were compared among pathological types of focal lesions. Results Among the 30 patients included in the study, 46 focal lesions were detected. Twenty-four lesions were metastatic lesions from primary cancer, 7 lesions were hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 9 lesions were hemangiomas, and 6 lesions were simple cysts. There was highly significant difference between the mean ADC of the malignant lesions (metastasis and HCC) and the mean ADC of benign lesions (hemangiomas and cysts). The ADC of malignant lesion was much less than that of benign lesion. The mean ADC of malignant lesions (n = 31) was 0.73 ± 0.19 × 10−3 mm2/s, and the mean ADC of benign lesions (n = 15) was 1.94 ± 0.68 × 10−3 mm2/s (p value < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the cysts and hemangiomas. There was no statistically significant difference between the metastases and hepatocellular carcinoma. Conclusion ADCs values were able to differentiate benign from malignant lesions. ADC should be considered in the work up of patients with hepatic focal lesions.

The establishment, staffing and structure and observations made in the first year of the existence of coronary care in an intensive care unit in a general hospital are recorded. Two hundred and twenty eight patients were admitted during the year in whom the diagnosis of myocardial infarction was confirmed. There were 29 deaths in the unit and 14 deaths occurred in the wards of the hospital after discharge from the unit. 49.1 per cent of the patients were admitted within 4 hours of the onset of symptoms and the mean duration of stay in the unit was 86.5 hours. The type of arrhythmia detected in the unit, and the treatment given to the patients both before and after admission to the intensive care unit are described.

Surgical process re-engineering is a methodology where the entire surgical process is systematically analysed and re-designed. The process starts with mapping of the current process followed by in-depth analysis of the existing process. A new process is drafted with the aim of making the whole procedure more efficient. The new process is then discussed with all the staff involved in the operating room. Following implementation of the process, surgical process re-engineering should ideally be routinely carried out to continuously improve the procedure. We present an example of surgical process re-engineering which we carried out on the procedure of carpal tunnel release. We used carpal tunnel release as a model as it is a very common operation, with predictable intra-operative findings, and the patient is likely to benefit directly from procedure time reduction. A preliminary mapping of three procedures was done followed by a detailed timed mapping of five routine carpal tunnel decompression procedures. The mapped process was analysed in detail and a number of changes were made in the process. After implementing the new process, a further five procedures were mapped and timed again. In comparison to the original process, we achieved a reduction of 20% in the mean procedure time and a reduction of 42% in the number of steps from 66 to 37.

1. Bull semen diluted 1/5 or 1/10 respired at the same rate whether the manometers were stationary or shaken. 2. Respirometric experiments using a manometer flask of special shape showed that bull sperm suspensions achieve this result by increasing the effective diffusion coefficient of oxygen in the suspending medium by 900%. 3. The hypothesis is put forward ( a ) that these results are caused by the existence of short-range order, as opposed to disorder, in bull sperm suspensions, even at comparatively low sperm densities (dilution 1/8 to 1/20); ( b ) that this order produces group sperm velocities greater than those of isolated spermatozoa; and ( c ) that as a result, larger volumes of the suspending medium are convected with the ordered sperm groups, causing an augmented ‘diffusion’ of oxygen. 4. This hypothesis was examined by taking photomicrographs of sperm suspensions at different dilutions and temperatures and determining from them the distributions of (i) the distance between pairs of nearest spermatozoa; (ii) the angle of inclination of a sperm head relative to that of the spermatozoon nearest to it; and (iii) the relative position of the nearest spermatozoon. 5. Comparison of the observed distributions and the corresponding random ones showed that the spermatozoa attracted each other, so that transient sperm groups were formed, in which the spermatozoa tended to swim in the same direction. A reduction in temperature or sperm density decreased the sperm order.

Coefficient of 65Zn heterodiffusion in Mg17Al12 intermetallic and in eutectic alloy Mg - 33.4 wt. % Al was measured in the temperature region 598 – 698 K using serial sectioning and residual activity methods. Diffusion coefficient of 65Zn in the intermetallic can be written as DI = 1.7 × 10-2 m2 s-1 exp (-155.0 kJ mol-1 / RT). At temperatures T ≥ 648 K, where the mean diffusion path was greater than the mean interlamellar distance in the eutectic, the effective diffusion coefficient Def = 2.7 × 10-2 m2 s-1 exp (-155.1 kJ mol-1 / RT) was evaluated. At two lower temperatures, the diffusion coefficients 65Zn in interphase boundaries were estimated: Db (623 K) = 1.6 × 10-12 m2 s-1 and Db (598 K) = 4.4 × 10-13 m2 s-1.

Background Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an autoimmune orbital disease characterized by edema of extraocular muscles (EOMs). Purpose To characterize the inflammation of EOMs in patients with TAO before and after radiation therapy using apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and to analyze the correlation between ADC and clinical activity of TAO. Material and Methods The ADCs of superior rectus (SR), inferior rectus (IR), medial rectus (MR), and lateral rectus (LR) muscles were measured in 52 eyes of 26 patients with TAO before and three months after orbital radiation therapy. In addition, 38 eyes of 20 healthy volunteers were included. The clinical activity score (CAS) was evaluated. The ADC maps were reconstructed and measured on the coronal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequence and calculated in mm2/s. Results The mean ADCs of EOMs before treatment were 1.42 ± 0.23 in SR, 1.37 ± 0.23 in IR, 1.41 ± 0.21 in MR, and 1.28 ± 0.25 in LR. The mean ADCs after treatment were 1.27 ± 0.18, 1.22 ± 0.26, 1.30 ± 0.22, and 1.15 ± 0.21, respectively. The ADCs were significantly decreased after treatment (all P < 0.001). The ADCs of patients with TAO were significantly higher than those of controls. There was a statistically significant correlation between the mean ADCs and the CAS in each patient with TAO both before and after treatment (before: r = 0.520; P < 0.001; after: r = 0.625; P < 0.001). Conclusion The ADC values of EOMs can be exploited as a quantitative indicator to evaluate the clinical activity and monitor the therapeutic responses of patients with TAO.

Reaction in a scalar mixing layer in grid-generated turbulence is studied experimentally by doping half of the flow with nitric oxide and the other half with ozone. The flow conditions and concentrations are such that the chemical reaction is passive and the flow and chemical timescales are of the same order. Conserved scalar theory for such flows is outlined and further developed; it is used as a basis for presentation of the experimental results. Continuous measurements of concentration are limited in their spatial and temporal resolution but capture sufficient of their spectra for adequate second-order correlations to be made. Two components of velocity have been measured simultaneously with hot-wire anemometry. Conserved scalar mixing results, deduced from reacting and non-reacting measurements of concentration, show the independence of concentration level and concentration ratio expected for passive reacting flow. The results are subject to several limitations due to the necessary experimental compromises, but they agree generally with measurements made in thermal mixing layers. Reactive scalar statistics are consistent with the realizability constraints obtainable from conserved scalar theory where such constraints apply, and otherwise are generally found to lie between the conserved scalar theory limits for frozen and very fast chemistry. It is suggested that Toor's (1969) closure for the mean chemical reaction rate could be improved by interpolating between the frozen and equilibrium values for the covariance. The turbulent fluxes of the reactive scalars are found to approximately obey the gradient model but the value of the diffusivity is found to depend on the Damköhler number.
