Expression of a Generic Full-Range True Stress-True Strain Model for Pipeline Steels Using the Product-Log (Omega) Function

Steel pipelines are subjected to a variety of complex, and sometimes difficult to predict, loading schemes during the fabrication, installation and operation phases of their lifecycles. Consequently, the mechanical behavior of steel pipelines is not only influenced by the steel grade but also by the loading history of the pipe segments. Due to the resultant intricacies of the nonlinear load-deformation behavior of pipelines, adequate numerical analysis techniques are usually required for simulation of pipelines under different loading schemes. The validity of such numerical simulations is largely influenced by the accuracy of the true stress-true strain characterization of the pipeline steels. However, existing stress-strain mathematical expressions, developed for the characterization of metallic materials over the full-range of the stress-strain relationship, have been observed to either loose predictive accuracy beyond a limited strain range or, for the more accurate full-range models, are cumbersome due to their requirement of a large number of constituent parameters. This paper presents a relatively accurate and simple true stress-true strain model which is capable of accurately predicting the stress-strain behavior of pipeline steels over the full range of strains. The proposed stress-strain model is characteristically unlike existing stress-strain models as it is essentially defined by a Product-Log function using two proposed parameters, and is capable of capturing a reasonable approximation of the yield plateau in the stress-strain curve. To validate the proposed model, curve-fitting techniques are employed for comparison to experimental data of the stress-strain behavior of different pipeline steel grades (X52 – X100). Excellent agreements are observed between the proposed model and the different pipeline steels over the full-range of the true stress-true strain relationship. Furthermore, the applicability of the proposed model is validated by means of a proposed parametric procedure for predicting the ultimate compressive strength of shell elements.

It is standard practice to approximate the post-yield behavior of pipeline steels by means of the Ramberg-Osgood equation. However, the Ramberg-Osgood equation is often unable to accurately describe the stress-strain behavior of contemporary pipeline steels with a high Y/T ratio. This is due to the occurrence of two distinct, independent stages of strain hardening. To address this problem, the authors recently developed a new ‘UGent’ stress-strain model which provides a better description of those steels. This paper elaborates a methodology to estimate suited parameter values for the UGent model, starting from a set of tensile characteristics. Using the proposed methodology, good approximations have been obtained for a preliminary series of eight investigated stress-strain curves. Next to all common tensile characteristics, the 1% proof stress is needed. The authors therefore encourage the future acquisition of this stress level during tensile tests. Currently, the authors perform a further in-depth validation which will be reported in the near future.

There are many studies on fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined pre-damaged concrete under quasi-static strain rates. However, few studies have focused on FRP-confined pre-damaged concrete under high strain rates. Thus, an experimental and analytical investigation was conducted to obtain the mechanical behavior of FRP-confined pre-damaged concrete under different strain rates. The results show that the stress–strain curves, ultimate stress, and strain values were affected by strain rate and the extent of concrete damage. A stress–strain model of FRP-confined pre-damaged concrete considering the strain rate was developed by modifying a stress–strain model of FRP-confined pre-damaged concrete under quasi-static loading. The proposed model was evaluated by using test data. The evaluation results show that the proposed model can predict the stress–strain behavior of FRP-confined pre-damaged concrete under different strain rates.

This study proposes a simple and rational stress-strain relationship model applicable to brick masonry under compression. The brick prism compression tests were conducted with different mortar strengths and with constant brick strength. From the observation of the test results, shape of the stress-strain curve is assumed to be parabola. In developing the stress-strain model, the modulus of elasticity, the strain at peak stress, and the strain at 50% of the peak stress on the descending branch were formulated from regression analysis using test data. Numerical and statistical analyses were then performed to derive equations for the key parameter to determine the slopes at the ascending and descending branches of the stress-strain curve shape. The reliability of the proposed model was examined by comparisons with actual stress-strain curves obtained from the tests and the existing model. The proposed model in this study turned out to be more accurate and easier to handle than previous models so that it is expected to contribute towards the mathematical simplicity of analytical modeling.

Abstract The unique stress-strain behavior of a carbon-black-loaded elastomer is due to the presence of a rigid, particulate phase, but also to the interaction of the elastomer chains with the filler. It is postulated that this interaction takes the form of adsorption on the filler-particle surface, which results in trapped entanglements. Upon deformation, the trapped chains are aligned parallel to the axis of stress. Thus, a practical stress-strain relationship could be developed which is capable to model the stress-strain behavior of compounds over the full range of extensions up to break. The analysis of a highly prestrained carbon-black-loaded NR compound in which the entanglement effect had been mechanically destroyed, demonstrated that the “sea-island” (SIP) coupling arrangement is most suitable for accounting for the interaction effect of the elastomer and carbon black. For moderately prestrained carbon-black-loaded NR and BR compounds a good fit of theory to experiment is obtained for a combination of the SIP coupling arrangement and the specially derived stress-strain relationship. Thus, a practical method is available for describing the deformation of carbon-black-loaded elastomers and for the modelling of carbon-black-loaded elastomer blends.

This study examined the stress-strain behavior of 10 calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2)-activated Hwangtoh concrete mixes. The volumetric ratio of the coarse aggregate (Vagg) and the water-to-binder (W/B) ratio were selected as the main test variables. TwoW/Bratios (25% and 40%) were used and the value ofVaggvaried between 0% and 40.0%, and 0% and 46.5% forW/Bratios of 25% and 40%, respectively. The test results demonstrated that the slope of the ascending branch of the stress-strain curve of Ca(OH)2-activated Hwangtoh concrete was smaller, and it displayed a steeper drop in stress in the descending branch, compared with those of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete with the same compressive strength. This trend was more pronounced with the increase in theW/Bratio and decrease inVagg. Based on the experimental observations, a simple and rational stress-strain model was established mathematically. Furthermore, the modulus of elasticity and strain at peak stress of the Ca(OH)2-activated Hwangtoh concrete were formulated as a function of its compressive strength andVagg. The proposed stress-strain model predicted the actual behavior accurately, whereas the previous models formulated using OPC concrete data were limited in their applicability to Ca(OH)2-activated Hwangtoh concrete.

A standard uniaxial tensile test, which establishes the engineering stress-strain relationship, in general, provides the basic mechanical properties of steel required by a structural designer. Modern numerical analysis techniques used for analysis of large strain problems such as failure analysis of steel structures and elements metal forming, metal cutting, and so forth, will require implementation and use of true stress-true strain material characterization. This paper establishes a five stage true stress-strain model for A992 and 350W steel grades, which can capture the behavior of structural steel, including the postultimate behavior of steel, until fracture. The proposed model uses a power law in strain hardening range and a weighted power law in the postultimate range. The true stress-true strain model parameters were established through matching of numerical analysis results with the corresponding standard uniaxial tensile test experimental results. The material constitutive relationship so derived was then applied to predict the load-deformation behavior of coupons with a hole in the middle region subjected to direct tension loading. The predicted load-deformation behavior of perforated tension coupons agreed well with the corresponding test results validating the proposed characterization of the true stress-true strain relationship for structural steel.

Glulam bamboo has been preliminarily explored for use as a structural building material, and its stress–strain model under axial loading has a fundamental role in the analysis of bamboo components. To study the tension and compression behaviour of glulam bamboo, the bamboo scrimber and laminated bamboo as two kinds of typical glulam bamboo materials were tested under axial loading. Their mechanical behaviour and failure modes were investigated. The results showed that the bamboo scrimber and laminated bamboo have similar failure modes. For tensile failure, bamboo fibres were ruptured with sawtooth failure surfaces shown as brittle failure; for compression failure, the two modes of compression are buckling and compression shear failure. The stress–strain relationship curves of the bamboo scrimber and laminated bamboo are also similar. The tensile stress–strain curves showed a linear relationship, and the compressive stress–strain curves can be divided into three stages: elastic, elastoplastic and post-yield. Based on the test results, the stress–strain model was proposed for glulam bamboo, in which a linear equation was used to describe the tensile stress–strain relationship and the Richard–Abbott model was employed to model the compressive stress–strain relationship. A comparison with the experimental results shows that the predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental curves.

Soils have nonlinear stiffness and develops irrecoverable strains even at very small strain levels. Accurate modeling of stress-strain behaviour at various strain levels is very important for predicting the deformation of soils. Some existing stress-strain models are reviewed and evaluated firstly. And then a new simple non-linear stress-strain model is proposed. Four undetermined parameters involved in the proposed model can be obtained through maximum Young’s module, deformation module, and limit deviator stress and linearity index of soils that can be measured from experiment directly or calculated by empirical formulas indirectly. The effectiveness of the proposed stress-strain model is examined by predicting stress-strain curves measured in plane-strain compression test on Toyota sand and undrained triaxial compression test on London clay. The fitting results of the proposed model are in good agreement with experimental data, which verify the effectiveness of the model.
