Studying a Signal due to the Tangential Component of Stray Fluxes from a Surface Flaw Detected with a Vibrating Induction Transducer

Emission and fuel consumption in swirl-supported diesel engines strongly depend on the in-cylinder turbulent flows. But the physical effects of squish flow on the tangential flow and turbulence production are still far from well understood. To identify the effects of squish flow, Particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments are performed in a motored optical diesel engine equipped with different bowls. By comparing and associating the large-scale flow and turbulent kinetic energy (k), the main effects of the squish flow are clarified. The effect of squish flow on the turbulence production in the r−θ plane lies in the axial-asymmetry of the annular distribution of radial flow and the deviation between the ensemble-averaged swirl field and rigid body swirl field. Larger squish flow could promote the swirl center to move to the cylinder axis and reduce the deformation of swirl center, which could decrease the axial-asymmetry of annular distribution of radial flow, further, that results in a lower turbulence production of the shear stress. Moreover, larger squish flow increases the radial fluctuation velocity which makes a similar contribution to k with the tangential component. The understanding of the squish flow and its correlations with tangential flow and turbulence obtained in this study is beneficial to design and optimize the in-cylinder turbulent flow.

AbstractMechanochemical reactions can be induced in a solution by the collision of balls to produce high-temperature and high-pressure zones, with the reactions occurring through a dissolution–precipitation mechanism due to a change in solubility. However, only a fraction of the impact energy contributes to the mechanochemical reactions, while the rest is mainly consumed by the wear of balls and the heat generation. To clarify whether the normal or tangential component of collisions makes a larger contribution on the reaction, herein we studied the effect of collision direction on a wet mechanochemical reaction through combined analysis of the experimental reaction rates and simulated ball motion. Collisions of balls in the normal direction were found to contribute strongly to the wet mechanochemical reaction. These results could be used to improve the synthesis efficiency, predict the reaction, and lower the wear in the wet mechanochemical reactions.

Three dimensional elastic-plastic contact of two nominally flat rough surfaces is considered. Equations governing the shoulder-shoulder contact of asperities are derived based on the asperity-asperity constitutive relations from a finite element model of their elastic-plastic interaction. Shoulder-shoulder asperity contact yields a slanted contact force consisting of both tangential (parallel to mean plane) and normal components. Multiscale modeling of the elastic-plastic rough surface contact is presented in which asperity-level FE-based constitutive relations are statistically summed to obtain total force in the normal and tangential direction. The equations derived are in the form of integral functions and provide expectation of contact force components between two rough surfaces. An analytical fusion technique is developed to combine the piecewise asperity level constitutive relations. This is shown to yield upon statistical summation the cumulative effect resulting in the contact force between two rough surfaces with two components, one in the normal direction and a half-plane tangential component.

Aims. We construct the rotation curve of the Milky Way in the extended solar neighbourhood using a sample of Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) G-dwarfs. We investigate the rotation curve shape for the presence of any peculiarities just outside the solar radius as has been reported by some authors. Methods. Using the modified Strömberg relation and the most recent data from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), we determine the solar peculiar velocity and the radial scale lengths for the three populations of different metallicities representing the Galactic thin disc. Subsequently, with the same binning in metallicity for the SEGUE G-dwarfs, we construct the rotation curve for a range of Galactocentric distances from 7 to 10 kpc. We approach this problem in a framework of classical Jeans analysis and derive the circular velocity by correcting the mean tangential velocity for the asymmetric drift in each distance bin. With SEGUE data we also calculate the radial scale length of the thick disc taking as known the derived peculiar motion of the Sun and the slope of the rotation curve. Results. The tangential component of the solar peculiar velocity is found to be V ⊙ = 4.47 ± 0.8 km s−1 and the corresponding scale lengths from the RAVE data are Rd(0 < [Fe/H] < 0.2) = 2.07 ± 0.2 kpc, Rd(−0.2 < [Fe/H] < 0) = 2.28 ± 0.26 kpc and Rd(−0.5 < [Fe/H] <−0.2) = 3.05 ± 0.43 kpc. In terms of the asymmetric drift, the thin disc SEGUE stars are demonstrated to have dynamics similar to the thin disc RAVE stars, therefore the scale lengths calculated from the SEGUE sample have close values: Rd(0 < [Fe/H] < 0.2) = 1.91 ± 0.23 kpc, Rd(−0.2 < [Fe/H] < 0) = 2.51 ± 0.25 kpc and Rd(−0.5 < [Fe/H] <−0.2) = 3.55 ± 0.42 kpc. The rotation curve constructed through SEGUE G-dwarfs appears to be smooth in the selected radial range 7 kpc < R < 10 kpc. The inferred power law index of the rotation curve is 0.033 ± 0.034, which corresponds to a local slope of dV c∕dR = 0.98 ± 1 km s−1 kpc−1. The radial scale length of the thick disc is 2.05 kpc with no essential dependence on metallicity. Conclusions. The local kinematics of the thin disc rotation as determined in the framework of our new careful analysis does not favour the presence of a massive overdensity ring just outside the solar radius. We also find values for solar peculiar motion, radial scale lengths of thick disc, and three thin disc populations of different metallicities as a side result of this work.

Abstract. We present a theory of trapped ion motion in the magnetotail current sheet with a constant dawn–dusk component of the magnetic field. Particle trajectories are described analytically using the quasi-adiabatic invariant corresponding to averaging of fast oscillations around the tangential component of the magnetic field. We consider particle dynamics in the quasi-adiabatic approximation and demonstrate that the principal role is played by large (so called geometrical) jumps of the quasi-adiabatic invariant. These jumps appear due to the current sheet asymmetry related to the presence of the dawn–dusk magnetic field. The analytical description is compared with results of numerical integration. We show that there are four possible regimes of particle motion. Each regime is characterized by certain ranges of values of the dawn–dusk magnetic field and particle energy. We find the critical value of the dawn–dusk magnetic field, where jumps of the quasi-adiabatic invariant vanish.

Experimental data obtained by measuring the tangential component of the force affecting radial baffles in a flat-bottomed cylindrical mixing vessel stirred with a Rushton turbine impeller is analysed. Spectral analysis of the experimental data demonstrated the presence of its macro-instability (MI) related low-frequency component embedded in the total force. Two distinct dimensionless frequencies (both directly proportional to the impeller speed of rotation N) of the occurence of the MI component were detected: a lower frequency of approximately 0.025N and a higher frequency of about 0.085N. The relative magnitude QMI of the MI-related component of the total tangential force was evaluated by a combination of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and spectral analysis. The values of magnitude QMI varied in the interval [rom approximately 0.05 to 0.30. The magnitude QMI takes maximum values at low Reynolds number values (in laminar and transitional regions). In the turbulent region (ReM >20000) the QMI value is low and practically constant. The dependence oj the QMI values on vertical position in the vessel is only marginal. The results suggest that the magnitude of the MI component of the force is significantly influenced by the liquid viscosity and density.
