ObjectivesIn 2012, Australia was the first country in the world to introduce plain or standardised tobacco packaging, coupled with larger graphic health warnings. This policy was fiercely opposed by industry. Media coverage can be an influential contributor to public debate, and both public health advocates and industry sought media coverage for their positions. The aim of this study was to measure the print media coverage of Australian’s plain packaging laws, from inception to roll-out, in major Australian newspapers.MethodsThis study monitored mainstream Australian print media (17 newspapers) coverage of the plain packaging policy debate and implementation, over a 7-year period from January 2008 to December 2014. Articles (n=701) were coded for article type, opinion slant and topic(s).DesignContent analysis.ResultsCoverage of plain packaging was low during preimplementation phase (2008–2009), increasing sharply in the lead into legislative processes and diminished substantially after implementation. Articles covered policy rationale, policy progress and industry arguments. Of the news articles, 96% were neutrally framed. Of the editorials, 55% were supportive, 28% were opposing, 12% were neutral and 5% were mixed.ConclusionsProtracted political debate, reflected in the media, led to an implementation delay of plain packaging. While Australian media provided comprehensive coverage of industry arguments, news coverage was largely neutral, whereas editorials were mostly supportive or neutral of the policy. Countries seeking to implement plain packaging of tobacco should not be deterred by the volume of news coverage, but should actively promote the evidence for plain packaging in the media to counteract the arguments of the tobacco industry.

Obesity represents a major and growing global public health concern. The mass media play an important role in shaping public understandings of health, and obesity attracts much media coverage. This study offers the first content analysis of photographs illustrating UK newspaper articles about obesity. The researchers studied 119 articles and images from five major national newspapers. Researchers coded the manifest content of each image and article and used a graphical scale to estimate the body size of each image subject. Data were analysed with regard to the concepts of the normalisation and stigmatisation of obesity. Articles’ descriptions of subjects’ body sizes were often found to differ from coders’ estimates, and subjects described as obese tended to represent the higher values of the obese BMI range, differing from the distribution of BMI values of obese adults in the UK. Researchers identified a tendency for image subjects described as overweight or obese to be depicted in stereotypical ways that could reinforce stigma. These findings are interpreted as illustrations of how newspaper portrayals of obesity may contribute to societal normalisation and the stigmatisation of obesity, two forces that threaten to harm obese individuals and undermine public health efforts to reverse trends in obesity.

This research explores mainstream and diasporic media coverage and discourses surrounding the Venezuelan economic and political crisis from late March 2017 until early May 2018. A comparative content analysis was applied to a total of 256 news articles, editorials, and stories from the Toronto Star, one of Canada’s largest newspapers, and from La Portada Canadá, a Spanish-language Latin American newspaper in Toronto. The results demonstrated diasporic media’s appropriation of journalistic biases such as human impact, dramatization, and national interests and the reframing of dominant discourses from international news agencies about the Venezuelan crisis. Whereas there are significant similarities between both media’s content regarding the crisis, La Portada Canadá stressed the transnational component of the Venezuelan diaspora through discourses about political and civic engagement in Canada. The Toronto Star focused more on the economic and political components of the crisis, which are closely linked to the country’s national agenda. ABSTRAK Pada perkembangannya media massa lebih mengarah pada media online. Dalam arus penyebaran informasi media online menjadi lebih luas dan cepat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan citra perusahaan pada PT.PLN (Persero) pada pemberitaan media online. Penelitian ini menganalisis isi konten pemberitaan terkait perusahaan pada isu subsidi listrik tepat sasaran 2016. Pendekatan penelitian menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah analisis isi. Dari kategori dan indikator yang telah ditentukan, ditemukan bahwa banyak digunakan nada pernyataan buruk pada judul berita namun tidak sama halnya dengan isi konten berita yang cenderung mendapatkan penilaian positif. Hal itu dikarenakan narasumber yang dominan dan terdapat dalam konten pemberitaan merupakan pihak-pihak yang terlibat dalam proses pembuatan kebijakan subsidi listrik tepat sasaran. Hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa perusahaan PT.PLN (Persero) dalam penelitian ini mendapatkan citra yang positif dari pemberitaan di media online detik.com terkait Isu Subsidi Listrik Tepat Sasaran 2016. In the flow of information dissemination online media becomes wider and faster. This study aims to describe the company's image to PT. PLN (Persero) on online media coverage. This study analyzes the content of news related content about the company on the issue of electricity subsidies on target 2016. The research approach uses quantitative research. The method used in this study is content analysis. From the categories and indicators that have been determined, it was found that many used bad statement tones in the headline but not the same as the content of news content which tended to get a positive rating. This is because the dominant sources included in the news content are those involved in the process of making electricity subsidy policy on target. The results of this study can be concluded that the company PT PLN (Persero) in this study get a positive image from the news on detik.com online media related to the Issue of the Right Target Electricity Subsidy 2016. Despite the increasing popularity of women’s sports, it has generally been found that female athletes receive less media coverage and are portrayed negatively with myriad gender-specific descriptors. Such biased representations warrant attention as they construct and reinforce traditional gender beliefs. This study compared the representations of female and male tennis players on the official site of the Australian Open 2015 and ESPN. A total of 357 articles were analysed using content analysis. The findings showed that gender representations on the two media outlets were quite similar as they both portrayed female players more negatively than male players by focusing on a few areas directly or indirectly: athletic weaknesses, negative skills, mental weaknesses and non-competitive roles (including appearance, attire, family and personal relationship). However, the use of certain descriptors might indicate the possibility of more gender-neutral representations of athletes in the future. It was concluded that while hegemonic masculinity was challenged at times, stereotypical beliefs about females were largely reinforced in the mediated gender representations on the two websites.
