Three types of colonies (WH, WA, and RA) have been characterized among 2245 isolates of Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides on the basis of colony growth rate and appearance (W, rapid growth and regular margin; R, slow growth and irregular margin) and of the shape of the majority of conidia (H, coiled; A, straight). Apothecia of Tapesia yallundae (anamorph : P. herpotrichoides) were produced on naturally infected stems of winter wheat and barley. Apothecia of an undetermined discomycete were occasionally observed. The progeny of more than 1700 ascospores from 72 apothecia of T. yallundae was distributed among the three types of colonies. These types remained stable through successive conidial and mycelial subcultures. All three colony types were sometimes obtained from a single apothecium. WH and WA were the most common, while RH was never observed. WA isolates were more often resistant than WH isolates to carbendazim. Inoculations of wheat and barley stems with ascospores of T. yallundae were unsuccessful, while inoculations with conidia or mycelium resulted in eyespot lesions. During equivalent periods, RA isolates were less virulent than WH and WA. Key words: cereals, eyespot, Deuteromycetes, sexual stage, Hordeum vulgare, Triticum aestivum.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench ’Pride P130’), wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ’Neepawa’), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ’Galt’) were harvested at 1-wk intervals on dryland at Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1976 and 1977 and separated into leaves, stems, heads, and seed. Whole-plant yields were higher in 1976 than in 1977 and sorghum whole-plant yields were higher than barley or wheat in both years. Sorghum grain yields were similar to those of barley, but were greater than those of wheat. Although sorghum is about 40 days later maturing than barley or wheat, its whole-plant and filling-period durations were not very different from the other two crops. Sorghum used water more efficiently than wheat or barley under drought conditions. The biggest disadvantage of present sorghum hybrids appears to be slow growth in spring.

PURPOSE The growth pattern of untreated metastatic neuroendocrine tumors is unknown. This uncertainty contributes to the disagreement regarding timing and could effect evaluation of the efficacy of antitumor treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the growth rate of untreated hepatic metastatic gastrinoma and to identify its predictors. PATIENTS AND METHODS Nineteen patients with histologically proven metastatic gastrinoma in the liver with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome were studied. Conventional imaging studies were performed initially and at 4- to 6-month intervals before any treatment. Metastases growth rates were calculated and correlated with laboratory and clinical parameters, as well as tumor extent on initial tumor assessment. RESULTS Twenty-six percent of patients (five of 19) demonstrated no growth over a mean follow-up time of 29 months, 32% (six of 19) had slow growth (1% to 50% increase in volume per month) over a 19-month period, and 42% (eight of 19) had rapid growth (> 50% volume increase per month) over an 11-month period. In patients with rapid growth, 62% died; 0% of the no-growth or slow-growth group died. No clinical or laboratory parameter correlated with growth rate, except the rate increase in fasting serum gastrin and the presence of bilobar liver or bone metastases. The growth rate was highly predictive of death from tumor. CONCLUSION The growth rate of metastatic gastrinoma varies markedly in different patients and 26% demonstrate no growth. The growth rate needs to considered in the determination of when and in whom antitumor therapy is initiated, as well as in the assessment of response to tumoricidal therapies.

Irritation fibroma are the most common form of reactive lesions found within the oral cavity. These lesions normally attain a small size and show a slow growth rate. This paper reports a case of gigantic intraoral irritational fibroma with a history of rapid growth. Complete excision was performed and the specimen was sent for immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. It was found positive for vimentin, hence reported as irritation fibroma.

A fungus with dark brown hyphae, thick melanized walls and slow growth was isolated from roots of Ferula ovina without any symptoms of disease. In a Bayesian inference phylogenetic analysis, the fungus clustered in a clade containing species with mostly 4-celled conidia as a sister of Ochroconis longiphorum, differing from that species in source of isolation, colony growth rate, conidial size and shape. Morphological and molecular evidence using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and nuclear ribosomal RNA regions (ITS and nucLSU) separated this isolate from other known Ochroconis species. Based on this strain, Ochroconis ferulica sp. nov. is firstly described, illustrated, and compared with similar species.

A pathogen transmitted by the eriophyid mite, Aceria tulipae, infects a number of Gramineae producing symptoms similar to wheat spot mosaic virus (1). An electron microscope study of leaf ultrastructure from systemically infected Zea mays, Hordeum vulgare, and Triticum aestivum showed the presence of ovoid, double membrane bodies (0.1 - 0.2 microns) in the cytoplasm of parenchyma, phloem and epidermis cells (Fig. 1 ).

A survey of 120 isolations of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from male patients showed that 47 (39%) isolates were unable to produce visible colonies without a supply of exogenous carbon dioxide. Of 63 strains, 25 strains required CO2 for isolation but none exhibited a CO2 requirement beyond subculture 4. CO2-requiring strains deprived of CO2 appeared to lose their colony-forming ability exponentially in an environment otherwise conductive to growth. The CO2 requirement was found to be linked to the initiation of growth. An agar-to-agar replica-plating device was used to study the early stages of colonial growth. The CO2 requirement was also found to correlate with the various phases of the colony growth cycle, such that it was required during lag phase, not required during the phase of rapid growth, and returned as colonies aged. These results are discussed.

Estimated expenditures on brood-care by unassisted female superb lyrebirds, obtained through time-energy budgeting, were compared with published values for other bird species. With the exception of nestbuilding, estimated daily expenditures were relatively low, due mainly to the small brood size and low level of parental attentiveness. It is suggested that the traits which reduce daily brood-care expenditures, particularly the small brood size and extremely slow growth rate, may have evolved as adaptations which enabled deserted females operating close to maximal capacity to cope with single-parenting. Male parental involvement could probably increase the growth rate of the young, but not brood size; moreover, egg- laying was sufficiently asynchronous to afford multiple mating opportunities to parentally emancipated males. However, the slow growth rate of the young results in relatively large overall brood-care expenditures for females. Investments by males of up to 50% of daylight hours and 45% of BMR on singing at the height of the mating season were comparable with those of partially emancipated, polygynous males of other species. They probably reflect the high level of competition to control good display areas and to advertise status and quality to widely spaced females.

Abstract BACKGROUND: To date, no study has compared the evolution of the foramen magnum area (FMA) and the posterior cranial fossa volume (PCFV) with the degree of cranial base synchondrosis ossification. OBJECTIVE: To illustrate these features in healthy children. METHODS: The FMA, the PCFV, and the ossification of 12 synchondroses according to the Madeline and Elster scale were retrospectively analyzed in 235 healthy children using millimeter slices on a computed tomography scan. RESULTS: The mean FMA of 6.49 cm2 in girls was significantly inferior to the FMA of 7.67 cm2 in boys (P <.001). In both sexes, the growth evolved in a 2-phase process, with a phase of rapid growth from birth to 3.75 years old (yo) followed by a phase of stabilization. In girls, the first phase was shorter (ending at 2.6 yo) than in boys (ending at 4.33 yo) and proceeded at a higher rate. PCFV was smaller in girls (P <.001) and displayed a biphasic pattern in the whole population, with a phase of rapid growth from birth to 3.58 yo followed by a phase of slow growth until 16 yo. In girls, the first phase was more active and shorter (ending at 2.67 yo) than in boys (ending at 4.5 yo). The posterior interoccipital synchondroses close first, followed by the anterior interoccipital and occipitomastoidal synchondroses, the lambdoid sutures simultaneously, then the petro-occipital and spheno-occipital synchondroses simultaneously. CONCLUSION: The data provide a chronology of synchondrosis closure. We showed that FMA and PCFV are constitutionally smaller in girls at birth (P ⩽.02) and suggest that a sex-related difference in the FMA is related to earlier closure of anterior interoccipital synchondroses in girls (P =.01).
