Most species in the family Cossidae can migrate from one host to a new one in later larval instars, which is different from other bark- and wood-boring insects. In this study, we selected Eogystia hippophaecolus (Hua, Chou, Fang and Chen, 1990), Deserticossus artemisiae (Chou and Hua, 1986), Deserticossus arenicola (Staudinger, 1879), Yakudza vicarius (Walker, 1865), and Streltzoviella insularis (Staudinger, 1892) to understand how these species locate new hosts in their larval stages. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine the typology, morphology, number, and distribution of sensilla on the antennae, maxillary palps, galeas, and labial palps of these five species. There were no differences in typology, morphology, and number of sensilla between the five species. We observed antenna with three to four short sensilla basiconica, two sensilla chaetica, four sensilla basiconica, and one sensillum styloconicum. The maxillary palp had seven short sensilla basiconica, one sensillum digitiformium, and two sensilla placodea. The maxillary galea had three short sensilla basiconica, two sensilla styloconica, and one sensillum chaeticum. The labial palp had one short sensillum basiconicum and one sensillum styloconicum. Our results will provide a basis for further studies on the feeding, host-transfer behaviors, and electrophysiology of this group of forest pests.

The maxillary palps of B. giganteus are located on the maxillae which lie between the labrum and labium. They are modified appendages used in feeding. Each appendage bears 5 segments, the most distal of which contains the palp organ or sensory pad (Fig. 1). The maxillary palps were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.05 M sodium cacodylate buffer (pH 7.1) containing .15 M sucrose and post-fixed in 1% osmium tetroxide in buffer. This was followed by dehydration and critical point drying. Cryofractography was performed on some of the palp organs prior to drying (1).The sensory pad is composed of an exocuticular membrane upon which lie numerous sensilla basiconica in an elliptical pattern on the ventral surface. The membrane enables the sensory pad to expand and, in living specimens it appears dome-like due to the pressure exerted on it by the hemolymph.

Phoretic mites use bark beetles for transportation to new, suitable habitats. Some phoretic mites act as predators and parasitoids of the bark beetles’ immature stages, especially egg and early larval stages, and are potential agents for the biological control of scolytine forest pests. Mites live very frequently in relationships with other invertebrates. Many are found in association with various species of bark beetles. Here, a total of 41 specimens of different bark beetles of the genus Ips (Ips acuminatus, Ips sexdentatus and Ips typographus) were studied for presence, species composition, and abundance of phoretic mites. The beetles were collected on dead wood and parts of tree bark of Pinus nigra, Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies in the Black Sea Mountains in Kastamonu and Artin Province of Turkey. A total of nine mite species were found, including Dendrolaelaps quadrisetus, Ereynetes sp., Histiostoma piceae, Paraleius cf. leontonychus, Pleuronectocelaeno barbara., Proctolaelaps hystricoides, Schizostethus simulatrix, Trichouropoda lamellosa and Uroobovellaipidis. All species are identified for the first time within Turkish fauna.

Gravid females of Metapenaeopsis barbata spawned in the laboratory by natural means and the larvae were reared from hatching to postlarval stage at 27·0–29·8˚C and 33·5–34·5 g kg -1 salinity. The larvae metamorphosed into first postlarvae, with a survival rate of up to 98·4%, after about 10 days following hatching and subsistence on only an algal diet of Tetraselmis tetrathele and Chaetoceros gracilis. Six naupliar stages, three protozoeal stages, three mysis stages and the first postlarval stage are described and illustrated. On the basis of morphological characteristics, larval stages of M. barbata can be distinguished from similar stages of closely related species in the family Penaeidae. As inferred from the morphology of the larval feeding apparatus, M. barbata is still a filter-feeder even at the first postlarval stage.

The coccidian Caryospora bigenetica was first described in the snake Crotalus horridus (Viperidae) from United States of America. This study represents the first record of the occurrence of C. bigenetica in snakes in South America. Feces were sampled between November 2013 and May 2014 from 256 wild snakes maintained in scientific breeding facilities in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS; n = 214) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ; n = 42), Brazil. Caryospora bigenetica was found in 14 (5.6%) snakes, all belonging to the family Viperidae. Ten Bothrops moojeni and two Crotalus durissus from MS were infected. The coccidian was also found in one C. durissus and in one Bothrops jararacussu from the state of RJ. The oocysts were spherical with a double wall, the exterior lightly mammillated, striations apparent in transverse view, 13.0 µm (12 – 14); polar granule fixed in the internal wall. Sporocysts oval or pyriform, 10.0 × 8.0 µm (9 – 11 × 8 – 9); Stieda body discoid; sub-Stieda body present; sporocyst residuum present, formed by a group of spheroid bodies between sporozoites. This study increases the number of viperid hosts of C. bigenetica and expands the geographical distribution to South America.

The studies with SEM clearly depicted that the antenna of female was longer than male antenna. Five types of sensilla namely trichodea, chaetica, styloconica, coeloconica and auricillica, and scales were observed on the flagellum of both sexes. Sensilla trichodea were distributed randomly on all segments and were the most frequent type. Six sensilla chaetica were observed on each flagellar segment in both sexes, except in the apical segment. A sensillum styloconicum was always found at the upper-middle region of each flagellar subsegment. This sensillum had a smooth petiole and a conic extremity with one to three apical structures. Sensilla coeloconica were situated from middle to the distal portion of segment. Sensilla auricillica were found among the scales and had the typical shape of rabbit’s ear. Sensilla squamiformia were present on dorsal part of the antenna among scales. They were shorter and finer than scales and were embedded in a socket and point distally. Sensilla basiconica were smaller and least abundant of all sensilla.

A total of 9 mite species in 2 genera were found, including Dendrolaelaps quadrisetus, Ereynetes sp., Histiostoma piceae, Paraleius cf. leontonychus, Pleuronectocaeleno barbara., Proctolaelaps hystricoides, Schizostethus simulatrix, Trichouropoda lamellosa and Urobovella ipidis. All species and genera are identified for the first time within Turkish fauna.

Abstract A relevant species in waste management but also in forensic, medical, and veterinary sciences is the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus; Diptera: Stratiomyidae). An ultrastructural study by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was conducted for the first time on maxillary palps of both sexes, describing in detail the morphology and distribution of sensilla and microtrichia. The maxillary palps, composed of two segments, show sexual dimorphism in length and shape. In both sexes, the first segment is covered only by microtrichia, but the second one is divided into two parts: the proximal one, covered only by microtrichia, and the distal one containing both microtrichia and sensory structures. These structures include two types of sensory pits and one of chaetic sensilla. Due to sexual dimorphism in palp size, females have a higher number of sensory pits. The sexual dimorphism of palps and the presence and role of sensilla in H. illucens was discussed in comparison to other species of the family Stratiomyidae and of other Diptera. This study may represent a base for further investigations on mouthpart structures of this species, involved in key physiological activities, such as feeding, mating and oviposition.

The complete larval development of the lobster shrimpLeonardsaxius amurensis(Kobjakova, 1937) (Decapoda: Axiidea: Axiidae) is described and illustrated for the first time. The first zoeae of this species were collected from the plankton samples and reared in the laboratory before moulting to the megalopa. A molecular genetic analysis based on comparison of partial mitochondrial COI, 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA sequence data confirmed the identity of axiid larvae found in the plankton andL. amurensisadults collected in the same area. The larval development ofL. amurensisincludes five zoeal stages and a single megalopa. Zoeae I ofL. amurensisare characterized by the presence of one short posterodorsal spine on the fifth pleonite in contrast to the larvae of related sympatric speciesBoasaxius princepshaving four posterodorsal spines on the pleonites 2–5.Leonardsaxius amurensisoccupies an intermediate position between lobster shrimps with abbreviated pelagic development (2–3 zoeal stages) and species with long development (up to eight zoeal stages). Thus, the number of zoeal stages in the family Axiidae varies widely, similarly to that in the families Callianassidae and Upogebiidae.

AbstractThe family Syllidae, aside from representing the most species-rich family in Annelida, is characterized by a number of sexual and asexual reproductive strategies. With the exception of a few viviparous species, the subfamily Syllinae is characterized by schizogamous reproduction with pelagic larval stages and without parental care. Laboratory rearing of ripe specimens of Syllis rosea showed a different reproductive strategy, hitherto unknown in this subfamily. While male stolons rapidly degenerated after fertilization, female ones released large eggs in a gelatinous cluster attached to the middle-posterior chaetigers. The gel mass progressively compacted as a cocoon wrapped by the stolon body; 7 days after the deposition the larvae hatched out from the cocoon at the metatrochophore stage and the female stolon died after a few days. After hatching the larvae remained associated to the stolon, and young specimens of S. rosea survived up to the 3-chaetiger stage. Until now cocoon brooding by the stolon has only been reported for some Autolytinae. The production of gelatinous egg masses and parental care are known in basally branching clades within Syllidae, suggesting that this reproduction mode might retain some ancestral features. The scarce knowledge about reproductive cycles in Syllinae does not allow clarification whether this strategy is unique for S. rosea, or it occurs in other congeneric species. Further research is needed to understand possible relationships between sexual reproduction and phylogeny, stolon morphology and its adaptation to parental care, and ultimately between reproductive strategies and ecology.
