Paleoclimatic changes during the Late Pleistocene - Holocene in Laguna Babícora, near the Chihuahuan Desert, México

The paleoclimatic variability of northern Mexico since the Late Wisconsinan is determined from sedimentological, geochemical, and stratigraphic studies of the lacustrine sequence of Laguna Babícora (29.4°N, 107.7°W; elevation 2100 m asl). Chronological control is based on 13 radiocarbon dates (6 from this study and 7 previously reported) from four stratigraphic profiles that cover a range from 16 342 to 2800 BP. Two major periods of increased humidity are recognized by lake-level variation during the Late Wisconsinan and early Holocene. The Late Wisconsinan humid period may be related to jet stream migration to southerly latitudes and the influence of the mobile polar high. This period has been identified in the sedimentary record of El Diablo profile with a radiocarbon date of 16 342 ± 201 BP. The early Holocene humid period is recorded in El Diablo (10 976 ± 115 BP) and Cano profiles (9614 ± 130 BP). It is interpreted as a result of the Younger Dryas climatic anomaly characterized by a temperature decrease and cold paleoclimatic conditions similar to those for the Late Wisconsinan. The early Holocene was followed by an overall gradual drying that reached a maximum around 6000 BP, during the middle Holocene. For the late Holocene evidence of widespread erosion, sedimentation changes, flooded surfaces, and paleosoils indicates that Laguna Babícora was subjected to short-term climatic changes.

We first report pollen and foraminifera analyses and radiocarbon dates from two cores taken from salt-marsh deposits bordering Port au Port Bay, southwestern Newfoundland. Results show that relative sea level (RSL) stood at 2.8 m below present higher high-water level (HHWL) at 2770 ± 300 years BP and at −1.8 m at 2365 ± 175 years BP at the core sites. They permit calculation of a rate of late Holocene RSL change from western Newfoundland. We then report other available dates bearing on the earlier RSL record of this area.A date of 5800 ± 200 years BP fixes the age of minimum RSL in Port au Port Bay at 11–14 m below present. A date of 9350 ± 120 years BP from St. George's provides a minimum age for the passage of sea level below present there. A date of 12 600 ± 140 years BP from Stephenville fixes a sea level at 29 m above present, whereas one of 13 600 ± 110 years BP from Abrahams Cove dates the marine limit at 44 m. These geographically restricted data closely constrain a curve of postglacial RSL change in the Port au Port Bay – northern St. George's Bay area. The form of the curve supports a recent model predicting sea-level response to wastage of a limited late Wisconsinan ice load in the wider region.

AbstractThis paper presents geochemical and grain-size records since the early Holocene in core ECS0702 with a fine chronology frame obtained from the Yangtze River subaqueous delta front. Since ~9500 cal yr BP, the proxy records of chemical weathering from the Yangtze River basin generally exhibit a Holocene optimum in the early Holocene, a weak East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) period during the middle Holocene, and a relatively strong EASM period in the late Holocene. The ~8.2 and ~4.4 cal ka BP cooling events are recorded in core ECS0702. The flooding events reconstructed by the grain-size parameters since the early Holocene suggest that the floods mainly occurred during strong EASM periods and the Yangtze River mouth sandbar caused by the floods mainly formed in the early and late Holocene. The Yangtze River-mouth sandbars since the early Holocene shifted from north to south, affected by tidal currents and the Coriolis force, and more importantly, controlled by the EASM. Our results are of great significance for enriching both the record of Holocene climate change in the Yangtze River basin and knowledge about the formation and evolution progress of the deltas located in monsoon regions.

Rock varnish is a manganiferous dark coating accreted on subaerially exposed rocks in drylands. It often contains a layered microstratigraphy that records past wetness variations. Varnish samples from latest Pleistocene and Holocene geomorphic features in the Lake Turkana basin, East Africa display a regionally replicable microstratigraphy record of Holocene millennial-scale wetness variability and a broad interval of wetter conditions during the African Humid Period (AHP). Three major wet pulses in the varnish record occurred during the generally wet interval of the early Holocene (11.5–8.5 ka) when the lake attained its maximum high stand (MHS) at 455–460 m. A >23 m drop from the MHS occurred between 8.5 and 8 ka. Subsequently two additional wet pulses occurred during the early to middle Holocene (8–5 ka) when the lake occupied its secondary high stand at 445 m. Collectively, these five wet phases represent an extended wet interval coincident with the AHP in the region. One moderate wet phase occurred during the subsequent climatic transition from the humid to arid regime (5–4.3 ka) after the lake level dropped rapidly from 445 m to <405 m. Five minor wet phases took place during the overall arid period of the late Holocene (4.3–0 ka) when the lake level oscillated below 405 m. These findings indicate that the AHP terminated rapidly around 5 ka in the Turkana basin in terms of lake level drop, but the regional shift in relative humidity from the AHP mode to its present-day condition lagged for about 700 years until 4.3 ka, hinting at a gradual phasing out in terms of moisture condition. These findings further suggest that Lake Turkana overflowed intermittently into the Nile drainage system through its topographic sill at 455–460 m during the early Holocene and has become a closed-basin lake thereafter for the past 8 ky.

AbstractThe 11 genera of Nearctic Braconini are keyed: two of them, Myosoma Brullé with a wide pantropical range and Alienoclypeus Shenefelt, new genus, are found chiefly in the Chihuahuan desert and shrub fauna of northern Mexico and the southwestern U.S.A. and are recorded as Nearctic for the first time. Four new species are described in Myosoma: eumystax, impexum, longius, and durango. R. D. Shenefelt describes a new genus and species, Alienoclypeus insolitus. The genus Atanycolimorpha Viereck, 1913 is synonymized with Ipobracon Thomson, 1892. The genus Coeloides is revised for the Nearctic Region; 12 species are described and illustrated. Five of these are new: mexicanus, durangensis, sympitys, tsugatorus, and sonora. One species, C. rossicus (Kokujev), is Holarctic, a new subspecies, betulae, is described from Canada. The following are new synonyms: C. rufovariegatus (Provancher) = (dendroctoni Cushman), C. vancouverensis (Dalla Torre) = (brunneri Viereck), C. crocator (Kirby) = (promontorii Dalla Torre).

New radiocarbon dates on wood from two exposures in Chilliwack valley, southwestern British Columbia, indicate that this area was ice free and locally forested 16 000 radiocarbon years ago. This suggests that the Late Wisconsinan Cordilleran Ice Sheet reached its maximum extent in this region after 16 000 years BP. The Chilliwack valley dates are the youngest in British Columbia that bear on the growth of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet.

Abstract Raramuri Criollo cattle from the Chihuahuan desert in northern Mexico have been described as an ecological ecotype due to their enormous advantage in land grass utilization and their capacity to diversify their diet with cacti, forbs and woody plants. This diversification in diet utilization, could reflect upon their microbiome composition. The aim of this study was to characterize the rumen microbiome of Raramuri criollo cattle and to compare it to other lineages that graze in the same area. A total of 28 cows representing three linages [Criollo (n = 13), European (n = 9) and Criollo x European Crossbred (n = 6)] were grazed without supplementation for 45 days. DNA was extracted from ruminal samples and the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced on an Illumina platform. Data were analyzed with the QIIME2 software package and DADA2 plugin and the amplicon sequence variants were taxonomically classified with naïve Bayesian using the SILVA 16S rRNA gene reference database (version 132). Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA and PERMANOVA for alpha and beta diversity indexes, respectively, and the non-strict version of linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) was used to determine significantly different taxa among lineages. Differences in beta diversity indexes (P &lt; 0.05) were found in ruminal microbiome composition between Criollo and European groups, whereas the Crossbred showed intermediate values when compared to the pure breeds (Table 1). LEfSe analysis identified a total of 20 bacterial groups that explained differences between lineages, including one for Crossbreed, ten for European and nine for Criollo. These results show ruminal microbiome differences between Raramuri criollo cattle and the mainstream European breeds used in the northern Mexico Chihuahuan desert and reflect that those differences could be a consequence of dissimilar grazing behavior.

Recent investigations of a limestone solution cave on the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) have yielded skeletal remains of fauna including late Pleistocene and early Holocene bears, one specimen of which dates to ca. 14,400 14C yr B.P. This new fossil evidence sheds light on early postglacial environmental conditions in this archipelago, with implications for the timing of early human migration into the Americas.
