Chronic Endrin Poisoning in Goldfish, Carassius auratus

Endrin incorporated into the diet of mature male goldfish for 3–4 months affected growth, gonad development, thyroid activity, serum characteristics, total and differential body fat, behavior, and mortality. A biphasic response to endrin dosage was characteristic. The low doses (4.3–43 μg/kg body weight per day) either caused no detectable effect or were stimulatory, as seen from increased rates of growth and higher total body fat contents. The two highest doses (143 and 430 μg) caused mortality, lowered growth rates, and other chronic symptoms of endrin intoxication; they also caused decreased thyroid cell heights, decreased gametogenesis, and lowered total body fat, as well as less vacuolization in liver cells.All doses except the highest caused elevated serum Na concentrations. The fish receiving the highest dose suffered osmoregulatory failure. Induced spermiation was not affected; fish receiving 143 or 430 μg/kg had greatly reduced, but functional testes.

AbstractBackground:The aim of the study was to assess possible relationships between adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (FABP4) and total body fat (TBF), abdominal fat, body fat distribution, aerobic fitness, blood pressure, cardiac dimensions and the increase in body fat over 2 years in a community sample of children.Methods:A cross-sectional study was used in a community sample of 170 (92 boys and 78 girls) children aged 8–11 years. TBF and abdominal fat (AFM) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). TBF was also expressed as percentage of total body mass (BF%), and body fat distribution was calculated as AFM/TBF. Maximal oxygen uptake (VOResults:Partial correlations, with adjustment for sex, between FABP4 vs. ln TBF, ln BF%, ln AFM, AFM/TBF and VOConclusions:Findings from this community-based cohort of young children show that increased body fat and abdominal fat, more abdominal body fat distribution, low fitness, more LVM and increased LA, increased SBP and PP were all associated with increased levels of FABP4. Increase in TBF and abdominal fat over 2 years were also associated with increased levels of FABP4.

Goldfish (Carassius auratus) were exercised continuously for periods of 28 days at swimming speeds of 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 body lengths per second and their rates of growth were determined. Changes in muscle fibre size were examined, as were changes which occurred in the concentrations of the major chemical constituents of these cells. These fish, typical of the carp family in that they are found only in still or slowly moving water, did not adapt well to the flowing water environment at any swimming speed. They often grew less than the controls, although consuming much more food. Changes in the composition of the muscle fibres indicated that excess food was not being stored, and also indicated that the major fuel for swimming at all speeds was glycogen. The fish survived well at high speeds and it was suggested that this was due to the ability of the species to metabolize glycogen anaerobically without the production of lactic acid.
