Implementation of project change management best practice in different project environments

Change orders are ubiquitous in construction projects, and effective and efficient control of changes is critical to project success. There have been many empirical suggestions as to how to manage changes for best project outcomes, but this research is specifically aimed at exploring the relationship between project characteristics and the implementation of project change management best practices (PCMBP). Construction project data for this research are derived from the Construction Industry Institute (CII) benchmarking and metrics (BM&M) database. Binary logistic regressions and factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) are performed to find out the differences among diverse types of projects in terms of the extents to which the PCMBP elements have been implemented. The findings can assist construction industry practitioners with using PCMBP more purposefully in accordance with specific project characteristics so that they will be better able to develop and administer their project execution plans.

Changes are a common phenomenon in the construction industry, impacting the project's cost, time, and performance. The purpose of this work is to a comprehensive review relating to variation order causes. Also, the aim here is to determine variation order causes in the building’s construction. More importantly, explore the relationship between these causes. However, the importance of specifying the causes for change orders is the first step in managing variation orders to reduce the harmful effect on a project. The field survey was conducted for several institutions such as health (Karkh’s health), higher education (University of Baghdad and University of Kufa). As a result, a field visit was made to the project sites. They were then, Conducting interviews with the resident engineer, the consultant, and the contractor. A developer tool called cause (variation orders) breakdown structure (CBS) included 12 causes at the first level, including 103 sub-causes. There is a relationship between the variation orders causes, which is evident in the third level. The study recommends adopting (CBS) a comprehensive reference for variation order causes in projects due to facilitating their management processes. Future research could examine the relative importance of variation order causes, in addition to using a fuzzy cognitive map to find the extent of each cause’s influence on the other.

Poor project requirements definition and management (RDM) is one of the major causes of project failure. However, many organizations do not adequately manage a project's requirements leading to a poor design basis. Thus, quality of requirements is critical to the success of any construction project. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the mediating effect of requirements quality on the relationship between RDM practice and project performance. The second objective was to determine whether the impact of RDM practice on project performance was moderated by project characteristics. A three-phase approach was employed to investigate construction projects in the Taiwanese building industry. The testing supports a role for requirements quality as a partial mediator in the relationship between RDM practice and project performance. The findings also indicate that project characteristics have a moderating effect on the relationship between requirements quality and overall project performance. Santrauka Prastai apibrėžti ir valdomi projekto reikalavimai – viena iš pagrindinių projekto nesėkmės priežasčių. Tačiau daug organizacijų neskiria pakankamai dėmesio projekto reikalavimų valdymui, todėl sukuriamas prastas projektavimo pagrindas. Taigi kokybės reikalavimai yra esminis sėkmės garantas bet kuriame statybų projekte. Pagrindinis šio tyrimo tikslas – išnagrinėti, kaip reikalavimų kokybė veikia jų apibrėžimo ir valdymo ryšį su projekto efektyvumu. Antrasis tikslas – nustatyti, ar projekto savybės mažina reikalavimų apibrėžimo ir valdymo poveikį projekto efektyvumui. Pritaikius trijų etapų metodą, išnagrinėti statybų projektai Taivano statybų sektoriuje. Bandymai patvirtino, kad reikalavimų kokybė iš dalies keičia jų apibrėžimo ir valdymo ryšį su projekto efektyvumu. Išvados taip pat rodo, kad projekto savybės riboja reikalavimų kokybės bendram projekto efektyvumui poveikį.

Currently, the world encounters the outbreak of an unprecedented epidemic named novel coronavirus COVID -19. World Health Organization (WHO) advises maintaining social distancing, preserving personal hygiene, and staying informed with the latest guidelines. WHO also reports the patients with robust immunity can combat the virus. However, the workers in the construction industry work and live in a crowded and non-hygiene environment. Moreover, they are characterized by illiteracy, a dearth of awareness, and chronic health problems that prove weak immunity. Therefore, this study aims to find the relationship between the virus and the prevailing conditions and the environment of the construction industry, under focus, and study so that the construction industry is not a vulnerability gap that may exacerbate the crisis. An extensive literature exploration for the latest research deals with coronavirus, the construction industry ergonomics, and its relevant diseases. This study makes robust alerts to motivate the governments, organizations, and individuals to collaborate to find solutions to close the gap between the current situation in the construction of ergonomics and the required precaution to avoid the outbreak of the virus. This study makes a crucial and novel contribution by paving the way for providing solutions to save humanity worldwide. The management system should review the conventional risk assessment procedures, and developed criteria must be introduced and become an everyday practice of all construction projects. This will help identify the gaps within the safety procedures associated with the COVID – 19 protection aspects. This article also introduces a framework in this regard.

Construction industry is considered to be one of the most important industries in Vietnam's economy. But many construction industry sectors have been experienced chronic problem as cost overrun. Therefore, a conceptual model of factors influencing construction cost was developed to determine the key factors that cause difference between budget cost and actual cost and some solutions are recommended to be applied to achieve the best outcome of cost. The result of analyzing 216 construction projects completed from 2002 to 2007 by companies located in Ho Chi Minh City indicated 6 main factors varying construction cost: project planners, project executives, economics, political, natural environment, fraudulent and lost. The results of multiple linear regression model confirmed the relationship between these above 6 factors and construction cost with the theories are supported at the statistically significant level of 0.05.


As the intricacy of construction projects is amassed, prospects for tribulations are mounting, depicting negative impact on projects’ cost, time and excellence. Thus, eliciting claims that aredisruptive to projects, time consuming and exorbitant. BIM holds enormousprobable in prosperous claim management practices. The progression of BIM can enrich knowledge sharing for information of a building or facility. It forms a vitalbase for decision making throughout the life cycle phase from the conceptual design to demolition. BIM is also, a valuable multidisciplinary cohesive source of information technology that posts benefits and disputes in the construction industry. The main aspiration of this paper is to appraise how and to what magnitude BIM can help evading and plummeting claims in Jordan construction industry.The paper ran a literature review on recent research, industry reports, and other sources to seehow they identified claims, its classifications, benefits, impacts and challenges of BIM on construction projects.Also, the paper acknowledgedcontemporaneous challenges in the claims field and the construction industry as whole. The attained outcomes have shown that BIM overtakes traditional claim management practices in many aspects including recognizing and investigating claims, where the benefits are comprehended in time and cost savings, less change orders, less rework. Moreover, the information and knowledge management that BIM postulates can improve many aspects of claim management.

Perubahan dalam pembinaan telah lama menjadi isu pertikaian antara pelbagai pihak yang terlibat dalam projek pembinaan. Namun, hanya sejumlah kecil kajian yang rasmi telah dijalankan untuk menganalisis sebab-sebab dan kesan-kesannya. Kajian ini tertumpu kepada analisis kekerapan dan keterukan berbagai-bagai faktor yang mengakibatkan perubahan dalam projek pembinaan rangkaian pembetungan. Adalah penting bagi sesebuah syrikat bukan sahaja mengetahui kos perubahan, tetapi juga mengenal pasti perkara-perkara yang perlu diberi perhatian untuk mengurangkan kos-kos sedemikian dalam projek akan datang. Kesemua data dan maklumat yang diperlukan diperolehi dari fail-fail arkib bagi tiga belas projek yang disahkan melalui temubual. Data-data dikategori untuk menganalisis kekerapan dan keterukan faktor-faktor. Jadual dan carta digunakan untuk menunjukkan hasil-hasil kajian. Daripada hasil analisis, keadaan tapak yang berbeza merupakan faktor utama yang mengakibatkan perubahan. Faktor-faktor ini menyumbangkan 49.3% daripada jumlah bilangan perubahan, 56.2% daripada jumlah kos perubahan dan 3.8% daripada jumlah kos projek. Dua ciri projek, iaitu nilai anugerah kontrak dan gred pendaftaran kontraktor dengan Lembaga Pembangunan Industri Pembinaan (mewakili pengkhususan, kedudukan kewangan dan sumber-sumber lain kontraktor) menunjukkan penyebab yang tertentu dengan perubahan. Kata kunci: perubahan; kekerapan; keterukan; pembetungan; rangkaian; pengkhususan Variations in construction have long been a debatable issue among the different participants involved in construction projects. However, only a few formal studies have been carried out to analyse its couses and effects. This study is focused on the frequency and severity of various factors causing variations in sewerage networks construction projects. It is important for a company not only to know the variation costs, but also to identify the most likely areas on which to focus in order to reduce these costs for the future projects. All the necessary data and information are obtained from archival files of thirteen projects and verified through interviews. These data are categorised to analyse the frequency and severity of factors. Tables and charts are presented to show the research findings. From the analysis, differing site conditions appear to be the major factors contributing to variations. They average 49.3% of the total number of variations, 56.2% of the total variation costs and 3.8% of the total project costs. Two project characteristics i.e. contract award value and the contractor´s registration grade with the Construction Industry Development Board (which represents the contractor´s specialisation, financial and other resources standing) show certain causal relationships with variations. Rework occurs across the life cycle of projects and has significant impacts on construction project performance. A rational approach to managing rework is by identifying the main sources of rework; then mitigation measures can be implemented to enhance performance on projects. Rework has been widely studied within the construction industry, but the link between rework and contract conditions remain unexplored. This study identifies and classifies the root causes of rework at the construction stage of projects. It then examines the relationship between the conditions of contracts with the identified root causes. A comprehensive list of rework root causes was determined through the review of literature, which was categorized into five classified factors. The classified factors include process, human resource, material/equipment, technical, and other related environmental and financial factors. The next step comprises a questionnaire survey designed to determine relationships between rework and contracts. The result of the study is presented descriptively for ease of understanding. The results show that rework could be managed more efficiently through contracting processes, which ultimately benefits construction projects’ performance.

Variation order (VO) is one of the main issues faced by the construction industry in Jordan. Many researchers had investigated on the causes of VO and proposed procedures to minimize and control this issue; however, the VO is affecting the construction industry badly even at moment. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a powerful management system that can make a significant difference in the project costs. However, BIM has not been examined as a tool to minimize the VO in Jordan. The main target of this study is to utilize BIM applications in reducing the effect of VO on the governmental projects in Jordan. In order to achieve this target, the researcher has designed a questionnaire to gather data related to VO causes and the BIM capability to solve this problem. The data collected from the questionnaires were analyzed statistically. The result from the analysis found that the consultant initiated the highest VO of 50% followed by the clients and the contractors of 20% and 10% unforeseen variation respectively. Moreover, it is found that BIM Design Applications, Facility Operations Simulation, Exploration Design Scenarios, BIM Design Detection and BIM Quantity Take-off and Cost Estimation were significantly capable of minimizing VO. Delays in a construction project can be regarded as a failure. This paper aims to investigate the causes of delay in Indian construction projects undertaken by private, government and nongovernmental organizations. In view of this 45 causes of delay were identified and developed the questionnaire for the quantitative confirmation of the most causes of delay. Consequently the questionnaire was distributed to construction professionals like Managers, Engineers and others. Subsequently the collected data was analyzed using statistical tool and the factors were measured and ranked under each group by importance index for various construction professionals. The results suggest that delays are mainly due to shortage of labours, shortage of construction materials and extra works (rework and change orders). The resources like manpower and materials are having highest contribution of about 24% compared to other sources. However this paper presents recommendations for a better project management techniques & procedures which can be adopted during conceptual & detailed planning phases of the project in order to minimize the construction delay.
