Delays in a construction project can be regarded as a failure. This paper aims to investigate the causes of delay in Indian construction projects undertaken by private, government and nongovernmental organizations. In view of this 45 causes of delay were identified and developed the questionnaire for the quantitative confirmation of the most causes of delay. Consequently the questionnaire was distributed to construction professionals like Managers, Engineers and others. Subsequently the collected data was analyzed using statistical tool and the factors were measured and ranked under each group by importance index for various construction professionals. The results suggest that delays are mainly due to shortage of labours, shortage of construction materials and extra works (rework and change orders). The resources like manpower and materials are having highest contribution of about 24% compared to other sources. However this paper presents recommendations for a better project management techniques & procedures which can be adopted during conceptual & detailed planning phases of the project in order to minimize the construction delay.

Persistent failure of construction projects to meet clients’ objectives has compelled a review of the extant systems for project delivery. This study assessed the prospect of adopting Agile Project Management (APM) for construction project delivery in Lagos State. To achieve this, the study examined the level of awareness of APM among construction stakeholders and developed a SWOT model for the adoption of APM technique for construction projects. The research adopted survey method using questionnaire. The study sample involved 196 construction stakeholders. Data obtained were analysed using Mean Score and Fussy Set Theory. The result showed that stakeholders’ level of awareness about the individual methodologies of APM is high. There are also weighty strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the adoption of APM in construction project delivery. The level of awareness among stakeholders portrays high prospects for APM adoption. However, there is need to embed trust, cooperation and improved team performance.

This paper is an attempt to explore the barriers to integrating sustainability into construction project management in developing countries. To this end, a comprehensive review of the literature is conducted, as a result of which a list of 30 barriers is culled from existing studies. The list of barriers is subsequently assessed in terms of relative importance index (RII) through a survey questionnaire administered to Iranian construction industry experts, resulting in a dataset of 176 completed questionnaires. Findings bring to light the most influential barriers to incorporating sustainability in construction projects for a developing country. These were: (1) lack of understanding of the potential selfbenefits of proactivity and high economic risks that unsustainable practices may carry, (2) inadequate assessment of risks and a silo-based approach, namely, insufficient cooperation among practitioners, research institutions and environmental organisations and (3) the lack of a systematic approach to planning and acting for the fulfilment of sustainability goals. As one of the first studies in its kind, the paper offers invaluable insight for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers, in supporting the transition of construction project management practices towards fulfilling sustainable development goals.

Purpose Over the past decade, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) introduced several green regulatory guidelines, federal decrees, and a considerable number of environmentally friendly initiatives. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the top green materials and systems used currently in the UAE construction industry as per the new laws dictate as well as see if professionals are switching over to incorporate more green materials, systems, and/or designs. Design/methodology/approach The work involved reviewing internationally popular green materials and systems for construction, developing a questionnaire based on the literature review, surveying professionals in the seven UAE emirates, and ranking the findings based on the relative importance index. Findings Findings found the top used green materials and system in the UAE’s construction industry. As well as identified that there is a communication gap between the design and implementation phases that is possibly hindering the use of more green materials and systems. Originality/value This study sets a baseline to measure the UAE’s progress over the coming years in terms of integrating more green construction materials, systems, methodologies, and trends.

As amount of information in construction industry is growing, the role of information system in project management is becoming increasingly important. With the emerging IT application to the advancing construction industry, construction project management system with advanced technology has been progressed vigorously to improve construction productivity and management efficiency. Recently, a web-based Project Management Information System (PMIS) is developed to support decision-making process by efficiently managing project related information generated from various discipline. Many firms are in the process of developing the PMIS system or already have been applied the system to various projects. However, PMIS is still in its early stage of development to be applied at industrial plant construction projects. With the complexity of the industrial plant projects, the industry practitioners need to be able to visualize the construction schedule information to manage the project efficiently. This study suggests methodologies for improving PMIS specialized for industrial plant piping construction projects to estimate the baseline schedule and performance measurement more accurately by developing a framework for the piping construction projects. By using this developed system, the researchers expect that piping construction projects will be more efficiently managed on a real-time basis through measuring progress of piping at each and every state of progress milestone and provide management with opportunities to forecast the level of efforts required to execute the remaining work scope in a timely manner.

Changes are a common phenomenon in the construction industry, impacting the project's cost, time, and performance. The purpose of this work is to a comprehensive review relating to variation order causes. Also, the aim here is to determine variation order causes in the building’s construction. More importantly, explore the relationship between these causes. However, the importance of specifying the causes for change orders is the first step in managing variation orders to reduce the harmful effect on a project. The field survey was conducted for several institutions such as health (Karkh’s health), higher education (University of Baghdad and University of Kufa). As a result, a field visit was made to the project sites. They were then, Conducting interviews with the resident engineer, the consultant, and the contractor. A developer tool called cause (variation orders) breakdown structure (CBS) included 12 causes at the first level, including 103 sub-causes. There is a relationship between the variation orders causes, which is evident in the third level. The study recommends adopting (CBS) a comprehensive reference for variation order causes in projects due to facilitating their management processes. Future research could examine the relative importance of variation order causes, in addition to using a fuzzy cognitive map to find the extent of each cause’s influence on the other.


As the intricacy of construction projects is amassed, prospects for tribulations are mounting, depicting negative impact on projects’ cost, time and excellence. Thus, eliciting claims that aredisruptive to projects, time consuming and exorbitant. BIM holds enormousprobable in prosperous claim management practices. The progression of BIM can enrich knowledge sharing for information of a building or facility. It forms a vitalbase for decision making throughout the life cycle phase from the conceptual design to demolition. BIM is also, a valuable multidisciplinary cohesive source of information technology that posts benefits and disputes in the construction industry. The main aspiration of this paper is to appraise how and to what magnitude BIM can help evading and plummeting claims in Jordan construction industry.The paper ran a literature review on recent research, industry reports, and other sources to seehow they identified claims, its classifications, benefits, impacts and challenges of BIM on construction projects.Also, the paper acknowledgedcontemporaneous challenges in the claims field and the construction industry as whole. The attained outcomes have shown that BIM overtakes traditional claim management practices in many aspects including recognizing and investigating claims, where the benefits are comprehended in time and cost savings, less change orders, less rework. Moreover, the information and knowledge management that BIM postulates can improve many aspects of claim management.

Change orders are ubiquitous in construction projects, and effective and efficient control of changes is critical to project success. There have been many empirical suggestions as to how to manage changes for best project outcomes, but this research is specifically aimed at exploring the relationship between project characteristics and the implementation of project change management best practices (PCMBP). Construction project data for this research are derived from the Construction Industry Institute (CII) benchmarking and metrics (BM&M) database. Binary logistic regressions and factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) are performed to find out the differences among diverse types of projects in terms of the extents to which the PCMBP elements have been implemented. The findings can assist construction industry practitioners with using PCMBP more purposefully in accordance with specific project characteristics so that they will be better able to develop and administer their project execution plans.

Construction industry is an important industry and remains so with the continuation of the development process especially in the developing countries. On the other it is very risk and hazard. As industry when compared to other industries financial losses and bodily injury and death, and resulting human, social impacts are more in the case of construction.  Mishaps also contain significant costs that are not insurable. Financial deliberations contains direct costs like medical reimbursement and  hidden costs includes loss of competence by breaking up crew, cost to train fresh or changed employee, damage to equipment and tools, cost experienced by delays. Many researchers have been suggested risk management techniques to minimize the losses in the industry and very few companies may be implemented the suggestions.  The goal of this study is to recognize and rank risks in construction projects. This study proposes the hierarchical dependencies between the criteria. The variations and factors have been investigated via questionnaire and is an element of an on-going research into the application of risk management in major projects. To know the performance and applicable of proposed model set of data collected from different industries by using the informal approaches such as intuition and experiences the study is conducted to prioritize and manage risks.

With the fast development of the construction industry, traditional project management cannot deal with some complex construction projects. This paper reviewed the development of the project portfolio management and the current situation of the Chinese construction industry. We suggest that project portfolio management is applicable and should be adopted in Chinese construction companies.
