Construction and performance of a full-scale geotextile reinforced test embankment, Sackville, New Brunswick

The instrumentation, construction, and field performance of a full-scale geotextile reinforced test embankment constructed on a soft compressible soil is presented. A relatively high-strength polyester woven geotextile was used as reinforcement. The construction sequence, the observed pore pressure response, and the vertical and horizontal displacements are reported. The development and propagation of cracks in relation to the construction sequence and the manner in which the embankment failed are described. The field data suggest that the shear strength of the foundation soil was mobilized at a fill thickness between 5 and 5.7 m. However, due to the stabilizing effect of the geotextile reinforcement, the embankment did not fail until the geotextile reached its ultimate tensile strength and tore when the fill thickness reached 8.2 m. The failure of the embankment was of a viscoplastic nature and although additional fill could be placed after failure of the geotextile and embankment at 8.2 m, no additional gain in the net height (i.e., relative to the surrounding area) could be maintained above the maximum of 6.6 m recorded when the fill thickness reached 8.2 m. Trial embankment approximately 3 meters height, 10 meters of length, 16 meters width, and a slope of 1V: 2H was completed on soft clay site at RECESS, UTHM, Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia. Two embankments were respectively reinforced by a high strength geotextile (HSG) and the combination of bamboo and low strength geotextile or bamboo-geotextile composite (BGC) at the interface between embankment fill and foundation soil. Each embankment was installed with the same geotechnical instrumentation scheme for monitoring purposes. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the field performance for both embankments in terms of improving settlement embankment under the embankment. For this purpose, the settlement under the embankment, settlement at the surface of the embankment and the excess pore water pressure response were measured through geotechnical instrumentation for over 418 days. The results showed that the BGC system is more practical than HSG in terms of settlement and also in terms of cost, without compromising the quality of the embankment performance.

Stages 1 (1967) and 2 (1982) of the Gloucester test embankment are studied using a fully coupled finite-element model. The rate-sensitive characteristics of the foundation soil are modelled using an elastoviscoplastic constitutive equation based on the elliptical cap yield surface and Perzyna's overstress theory of viscoplasticity. The aspect ratio of the yield surface for the Gloucester foundation soil is estimated using conventional laboratory shear and consolidation test results. Calculated and measured behaviour during consolidated isotropically undrained triaxial tests and long-term Rowe cell consolidation tests are compared and the ability of the model to describe the measured behaviour of stages 1 and 2 of the Gloucester test embankment is studied. This paper explores the implications of modelling the residual or restructured properties of the Gloucester foundation soil and demonstrates the ability of a single elastoviscoplastic yield-surface model to describe the undrained and drained response of the Gloucester foundation soil during laboratory and field loading conditions.Key words: elliptical cap, rate sensitive, elastoviscoplasticity, embankment settlements, pore pressures, field performance.

Summary: In the United States' normative population for the WAIS-R, differences (Ds) between persons' verbal and performance IQs (VIQs and PIQs) tend to increase with an increase in full scale IQs (FSIQs). This suggests that norm-referenced interpretations of Ds should take FSIQs into account. Two new graphs are presented to facilitate this type of interpretation. One of these graphs estimates the mean of absolute values of D (called typical D) at each FSIQ level of the US normative population. The other graph estimates the absolute value of D that is exceeded only 5% of the time (called abnormal D) at each FSIQ level of this population. A graph for the identification of conventional “statistically significant Ds” (also called “reliable Ds”) is also presented. A reliable D is defined in the context of classical true score theory as an absolute D that is unlikely (p < .05) to be exceeded by a person whose true VIQ and PIQ are equal. As conventionally defined reliable Ds do not depend on the FSIQ. The graphs of typical and abnormal Ds are based on quadratic models of the relation of sizes of Ds to FSIQs. These models are generalizations of models described in Hsu (1996) . The new graphical method of identifying Abnormal Ds is compared to the conventional Payne-Jones method of identifying these Ds. Implications of the three juxtaposed graphs for the interpretation of VIQ-PIQ differences are discussed.

The difference (D) between a person's Verbal IQ (VIQ) and Performance IQ (PIQ) has for some time been considered clinically meaningful ( Kaufman, 1976 , 1979 ; Matarazzo, 1990 , 1991 ; Matarazzo & Herman, 1985 ; Sattler, 1982 ; Wechsler, 1984 ). Particularly useful is information about the degree to which a difference (D) between scores is “abnormal” (i.e., deviant in a standardization group) as opposed to simply “reliable” (i.e., indicative of a true score difference) ( Mittenberg, Thompson, & Schwartz, 1991 ; Silverstein, 1981 ; Payne & Jones, 1957 ). Payne and Jones (1957) proposed a formula to identify “abnormal” differences, which has been used extensively in the literature, and which has generally yielded good approximations to empirically determined “abnormal” differences ( Silverstein, 1985 ; Matarazzo & Herman, 1985 ). However applications of this formula have not taken into account the dependence (demonstrated by Kaufman, 1976 , 1979 , and Matarazzo & Herman, 1985 ) of Ds on Full Scale IQs (FSIQs). This has led to overestimation of “abnormality” of Ds of high FSIQ children, and underestimation of “abnormality” of Ds of low FSIQ children. This article presents a formula for identification of abnormal WISC-R Ds, which overcomes these problems, by explicitly taking into account the dependence of Ds on FSIQs.

The combine harvest for soybean crops market are currently available two types of combine with header or platform, one of conventional with revolving reel with metal or plastic teeth to cause the cut crop to fall into the auger header and the other called "draper" headers that use a fabric or rubber apron instead of a cross auger, there are few test about performance of this combine header for soybean in Mato Grosso State. The aim of this work was to evaluate the soybean harvesting quantitative losses and performance using two types combine header in four travel speed. The experiment was conducted during soybean crops season 2014/15, the farm Tamboril in the municipality of Pontes e Lacerda, State of Mato Grosso. The was used the experimental design of randomized blocks, evaluating four forward harvesting speeds (4 km h-1, 5 km h-1, 6 km h-1 and 7 km h-1), the natural crops losses were analyzed, loss caused by the combine harvester (combine header, internal mechanisms and total losses) and was also estimated the  field performance of each combine. Data were submitted to analysis of variance by F test and compared of the average by Tukey test at 5% probability. The results show the draper header presents a smaller amount of total loss and in most crop yield when compared with the conventional cross auger.

The anaerobic selector of the A/0™ process offers many advantages over conventional activated sludge processes with respect to process performance and operational stability. This high-rate, single-sludge process has been successfully demonstrated in full-scale operations for biological phosphorus removal and total nitrogen control in addition to BOD and TSS removal. This process can be easily utilized in upgrading existing treatment plants to meet stringent discharge limitations and to provide capacity expansion. Upgrades of two full-scale installations are described and performance data from the two facilities are presented.
