X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements have been executed for TlTiOPO 4 to elucidate the general features in the electronic structure of the KTiOPO 4 family compounds. The peculiarities of the valence band structure have been discussed for the crystals. The persistence of core level binding energy differences O 1s–P 2p and O 1s–Ti 2p 3/2 has been detected in TlTiOPO 4 and KTiOPO 4, which relates well with the constancy of averaged P – O and Ti – O chemical bond lengths in this crystal family. The superstructure ordering of the TlTiOPO 4 surface subjected to polishing and annealing has been detected by reflectance high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). From comparison of surface crystallographic properties of TlTiOPO 4 and KTiOPO 4, the most typical superstructure indices have been revealed.

The effects of ion bombardment and r.f. plasma oxidation of graphite surfaces on subsequent growth and electronic properties of vacuum deposited palladium clusters have been investigated by methods of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy with X-ray excitation (XAES). Due to the significantly increased density of surface defects on which the nucleation process occurs the bulk value of the Pd 3d core level binding energy is achieved at higher surface coverage by palladium on bombarded surfaces than on ordered graphite. Angle resolved photoelectron spectra of oxidized graphite surfaces reveal significant embedding of oxygen in graphite surface layers. The C 1s and O 1s photoelectron spectra are consistent with presence of two major oxygen species involving C-O and C=O type linkages which are not homogeneously distributed within the graphite surface layers. Two effects were observed on oxidized surfaces: an increase of palladium dispersion and interaction of the metal clusters with surface oxygen groups. Using the simple interpretation of the modified Auger parameter the relaxation and chemical shift contributions to the measured Pd core level shifts are estimated. In the region of low surface coverage by palladium the effect of palladium-oxygen interaction on Pd core level binding energy exceeds the effects of increased dispersity.

Copper adsorption on Ru(0001) has been studied by synchrotron radiation. The clean Ru 3d 5/2 spectra were found to consist of two components with a binding energy shift of 400 meV. The component with the lower binding energy represents the first layer of ruthenium atoms. Adsorption of copper gives rise to core level shifts of the Ru 3d 5/2 components, which were studied as a function of Cu coverage. Experiments were carried out with copper coverages varying from the submonolayer range up to two monolayers of copper. The binding energy of the Cu 2p 3/2 level was measured by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy.

Abstract The measured O Kα X-ray emission spectrum of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x is compared with a spectrum based on local density band structure calculations. By taking also into account the shape of the measured O 1s X-ray photoelectron spectrum an energy level diagram for the O 1s core-level binding energies of the three different oxygen sites is constructed. The O 1s binding energy in the Bi2O2-layers is found to be about the same as that one in the SrO-layers, whereas the binding energy in the CuO2-layers is lower by about 0.5 eV.
