AbstractWe test the validity of a possible schematization of DNA structure and dynamics based on the Chern–Simons theory, that is a topological field theory mostly considered in the context of effective gravity theories. By means of the expectation value of the Wilson Loop, derived from this analogue gravity approach, we find the point-like curvature of genomic strings in KRAS human gene and COVID-19 sequences, correlating this curvature with the genetic mutations. The point-like curvature profile, obtained by means of the Chern–Simons currents, can be used to infer the position of the given mutations within the genetic string. Generally, mutations take place in the highest Chern–Simons current gradient locations and subsequent mutated sequences appear to have a smoother curvature than the initial ones, in agreement with a free energy minimization argument.

Up to 10 crossing numbers, there are two knots, 942 and 1071 whose chirality is not detected by any of the known polynomials, namely, Jones invariants and their two variable generalizations, HOMFLY and Kauffman invariants. We show that the generalized knot invariants, obtained through SU(2) Chern-Simons topological field theory, which give the known polynomials as special cases, are indeed sensitive to the chirality of these knots.

A procedure for constructing topological actions from centrally extended Lie algebras is introduced. For a Kac–Moody algebra, this produces the three-dimensional Chern–Simons theory, while for the Virasoro algebra, the result is a new three-dimensional topological field theory whose physical states satisfy the Virasoro Ward identity. This topological field theory is shown to be a first order formulation of two-dimensional induced gravity in the chiral gauge. The extension to W3 gravity is discussed.

A class of topological field theories like the BF model and Chern–Simons theory, when quantized in the Landau gauge, enjoys the property of invariance under a vector supersymmetry, which is responsible for their finiteness. We introduce a new type of gauge fixing which makes these theories invariant under an extended BRS symmetry, containing a new type of field, the ghost of diffeomorphisms. The presence of such an extension is naturally related to the vector supersymmetry discussed before.

We study three-dimensional gauge theories based on orthogonal groups. Depending on the global form of the group these theories admit discrete \thetaθ-parameters, which control the weights in the sum over topologically distinct gauge bundles. We derive level-rank duality for these topological field theories. Our results may also be viewed as level-rank duality for SO(N)_{K}SO(N)K Chern-Simons theory in the presence of background fields for discrete global symmetries. In particular, we include the required counterterms and analysis of the anomalies. We couple our theories to charged matter and determine how these counterterms are shifted by integrating out massive fermions. By gauging discrete global symmetries we derive new boson-fermion dualities for vector matter, and present the phase diagram of theories with two-index tensor fermions, thus extending previous results for SO(N)SO(N) to other global forms of the gauge group.

Chern–Weil theory provides for each invariant polynomial on a Lie algebra 𝔤 a map from 𝔤-connections to differential cocycles whose volume holonomy is the corresponding Chern–Simons theory action functional. Kotov and Strobl have observed that this naturally generalizes from Lie algebras to dg-manifolds and to dg-bundles and that the Chern–Simons action functional associated this way to an n-symplectic manifold is the action functional of the AKSZ σ-model whose target space is the given n-symplectic manifold (examples of this are the Poisson σ-model or the Courant σ-model, including ordinary Chern–Simons theory, or higher-dimensional Abelian Chern–Simons theory). Here we show how, within the framework of the higher Chern–Weil theory in smooth ∞-groupoids, this result can be naturally recovered and enhanced to a morphism of higher stacks, the same way as ordinary Chern–Simons theory is enhanced to a morphism from the stack of principal G-bundles with connections to the 3-stack of line 3-bundles with connections.

Abstract We consider symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy in AdS3/CFT2 coupled to U(1) Chern-Simons theory. We identify the holographic dual of the charged moments in the two-dimensional conformal field theory as a charged Wilson line in the bulk of AdS3, namely the Ryu-Takayanagi geodesic minimally coupled to the U(1) Chern-Simons gauge field. We identify the holonomy around the Wilson line as the Aharonov-Bohm phases which, in the two-dimensional field theory, are generated by charged U(1) vertex operators inserted at the endpoints of the entangling interval. Furthermore, we devise a new method to calculate the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy by relating the generating function for the charged moments to the amount of charge in the entangling subregion. We calculate the subregion charge from the U(1) Chern-Simons gauge field sourced by the bulk Wilson line. We use our method to derive the symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy for Poincaré patch and global AdS3, as well as for the conical defect geometries. In all three cases, the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy is determined by the length of the Ryu-Takayanagi geodesic and the Chern-Simons level k, and fulfills equipartition of entanglement. The asymptotic symmetry algebra of the bulk theory is of $$ \hat{\mathfrak{u}}{(1)}_k $$ u ̂ 1 k Kac-Moody type. Employing the $$ \hat{\mathfrak{u}}{(1)}_k $$ u ̂ 1 k Kac-Moody symmetry, we confirm our holographic results by a calculation in the dual conformal field theory.

We show that the two-loop contribution to the coefficient of the Chern–Simons term in the effective action of the Yang–Mills–Chern–Simons theory is infrared finite in the background field Landau gauge. We also discuss the difficulties in verifying the conjecture, due to topological considerations, that there are no more quantum corrections to the Chern–Simons term other than the well-known one-loop shift of the coefficient.
