Peripheral nerve injuries are a common condition in which a nerve is damaged, affecting more than one million people every year. There are still no efficient therapeutic treatments for these injuries. Artificial scaffolds can offer new opportunities for nerve regeneration applications; in this framework, chitosan is emerging as a promising biomaterial. Here, we set up a simple and effective method for the production of micro-structured chitosan films by solvent casting, with high fidelity in the micro-pattern reproducibility. Three types of chitosan directional micro-grooved patterns, presenting different levels of symmetricity, were developed for application in nerve regenerative medicine: gratings (GR), isosceles triangles (ISO) and scalene triangles (SCA). The directional patterns were tested with a Schwann cell line. The most asymmetric topography (SCA), although it polarized the cell shaping less efficiently, promoted higher cell proliferation and a faster cell migration, both individually and collectively, with a higher directional persistence of motion. Overall, the use of micro-structured asymmetrical directional topographies may be exploited to enhance the nerve regeneration process mediated by chitosan scaffolds.

The mechanical stimulation from extracellular matrix could regulate physiological behavior of cells through the mechanism of mechanotransduction. Previous researches had shown that apoptosis could be regulated by the size of the cell adhesion area. However, the regulation of cell apoptosis by different adhesion shape with the same area is still unclear. This workfocused on the regulation of apoptosis for bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by different circularity and area of adhesion geometry. We manufactured micro-pattern surface which was suitable for adhesion of MSCs by the technique of micro-contact printing. Three typesof geometry for individual is land of micro-pattern were designed. We adopted terminal-deoxynucleoitidyl transfer as emediated nick end labeling (TUNEL) method to detectcell apoptosis. This research shows that the adhesion geometry which has smaller area and greater circularity will promote apoptosis of MSCs. This indicates that MSCsmay prefer to live on the surface without any restrict. Ourstudies focused on the significantly important problem about interaction between extracellular matrix and physiological behavior of mesenchymal stem cells.

Through computer aided design, manufacturing and evaluation, various ceramics dendrites with spatially ordered micro cavities were successfully fabricated by utilizing stereolithography. Micrometer order ceramic lattices were propagated spatially in computer graphic space. Ceramics nanoparticles were dispersed in to photo sensitive liquid resins to obtain thixotropic slurries. The paste material was spread on a grass substrate by using a mechanical knife edge, and an ultra violet micro pattern was exposed to create cross sectional solid layer. After the layer stacking process, the obtained composite precursor was dewaxed and sintered in an air atmosphere. By the micro patterning stereolithography, solid electrolyte dendrites of yttria stabilized zirconia with spatially ordered porous structures were fabricated for fuel cell miniaturizations. Gaseous fluid profiles and pressure distributions in the formed ceramic lattices with various porosity percent were visualized and analyzed by a finite element method. Subsequently, alumina micro photonic crystals with a diamond lattice structure were fabricated. Electromagnetic wave properties were measured by using a terahertz time domain spectroscopy. A complete photonic band gap was exhibited, and a localized mode to select the wavelength was obtained by introducing a defect cavity.
