The discrete model, approximating with exponential accuracy the set of interacting closed vortex lines in an ideal fluid, is proposed and investigated by means of the computer. The vortex lines move in their own velocity field according to the Biot-Savart law. This is a generalized Hamiltonian system possessing in addition an infinite number of conservation laws. Nevertheless, the motion becomes stochastic for certain initial conditions, and may be interpreted as marking the onset of turbulence.

In this paper, piston wind effect on smoke diffusion characteristic in subway tunnel is studied by using three-dimensional transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. In the first simulation case, fire disaster is simulated with homogeneous resting initial field condition. In the second simulation case, the train’s decelerating process till stopping in the tunnel is simulated for getting three-dimensional tunnel air velocity field distribution. Then the final heterogeneous air velocity field when the train stops in the tunnel is taken as initial field condition and the same fire scenario as the first case is simulated again. The data obtained under both initial conditions are compared by detecting people evacuation safety and the influence of initial air velocity field is analyzed. The results show that the inertial air velocity field caused by train’s movement has significant influence on smoke diffusion at the first few minutes of fire disaster, which is the key time for people’s evacuation. The adopted method in this paper and the simulation result could be used in establishing more effective subway fire evacuation plan.

The scaling laws for the reconnection of isolated pairs of quantised vortices are characterised by numerically integrating the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equations, the simplest mean-field equations for a quantum fluid. The primary result is the identification of distinctly different temporal power laws for the pre- and post-reconnection separation distances $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}(t)$ for two configurations. For the initially anti-parallel case, the scaling laws before and after the reconnection time $t_{r}$ obey the dimensional $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\sim |t_{r}-t|^{1/2}$ prediction with temporal symmetry about $t_{r}$ and physical space symmetry about the mid-point between the vortices $x_{r}$. The extensions of the vortex lines close to reconnection form the edges of an equilateral pyramid. For all of the initially orthogonal cases, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\sim |t_{r}-t|^{1/3}$ before reconnection and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\sim |t-t_{r}|^{2/3}$ after reconnection are respectively slower and faster than the dimensional prediction. For both configurations, smooth scaling laws are generated due to two innovations. The first innovation is to use an initial low-energy vortex-core density profile that suppresses unwanted density fluctuations as the vortices evolve in time. The other innovation is the accurate identification of the position of the vortex cores from a pseudo-vorticity constructed on the three-dimensional grid from the gradients of the wave function. These trajectories allow us to calculate the Frenet–Serret frames and the curvature of the vortex lines, secondary results that might hold clues for the origin of the differences between the scaling laws of the two configurations. Reconnection takes place in a reconnection plane defined by the average tangents $\boldsymbol{T}_{av}$ and curvature normal $\boldsymbol{N}_{av}$ directions of the pseudo-vorticity curves at the points of closest approach, at time $t\approx t_{r}$. To characterise the structure further, lines are drawn that connect the four arms that extend from the reconnection plane, from which four angles $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{i}$ between the lines are defined. Their sum is convex or hyperbolic, that is $\sum _{i=1,4}\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{i}>360^{\circ }$, for the orthogonal cases, as opposed to the acute angles of the pyramid found for the anti-parallel initial conditions.

Numerical studies of an apparently stable knotted singularity are used here to seek out regularities of vortex dynamics in three-dimensional excitable media. Initial conditions were contrived to produce a vortex filament in the form of a trefoil (3:2 torus) knot, using the piecewise linear 'B-kinetics', with excitability parameter 'g' set to 0.9. The simulation was pursued for 3000 time units, or about 125 wave rotations, during which time the knot was observed to rigidly 'precess' about its symmetry axis, completing one turn every 96 wave rotations, and also translate along that same axis, at about 1 percent of wavespeed. These motions, described with respect to the local Frenet frame, were shown to be highly correlated with local geometry and twist, yielding possible 'laws of filament motion', which might prove viable in other contexts. The trefoil knot is the first organizing center to be studied in detail which exhibits nonuniform twist, and its dynamical behavior supports the notion that the arclength derivative of twist is an important determinant of filament motion, first postulated by Keener in 1988. The knot also exhibited changes in twist distribution, and, to a lesser extent, local geometry, within one wave rotation period, adding an unforeseen complication to efforts at understanding vortex dynamics. The knot is compact, only about a wavelength in radius, so filament interactions may play a prominent role in determining the stability and behavior of the object. The locus of wave collisions was determined for the knot; in places this surface apparently adjoins the filament itself. In the course of this study, two different criteria for locating the filament were compared, and many analytic and graphical utilities were developed, which may prove useful in further studies of three-dimensional excitable media.

Development of the technologies simulating optical processes in an arbitrary dispersed medium is one of the important directions in the field of optical instrumentation and can provide computer simulation of the processes instead of using expensive equipment in physical experiments. The goal of the study is simulation of scattering of optical radiation by aerosol media using the finite element method to show a practical significance of the results of virtual experiments. We used the following initial conditions of the model: radius of a spherical particle of distilled water is 1 μm, wavelength of the incident optical radiation is 0.6328 μm, air is a medium surrounding the particle. An algorithm for implementation of the model by the finite element method is proposed. A subprogram has been developed which automates a virtual experiment for a group of particles to form their random arrangement in the model and possibility of changing their geometric shape and size within predetermined intervals. Model dependences of the radiation intensity on the scattering angle for single particle and groups of particles are presented. Simulation of the light transmission through a dispersed medium provides development of a given photosensor design and determination of the minimum number of photodetectors when measuring the parameters of the medium under study via analysis of the indicatrix of scattering by a group of particles.

Three-dimensional interactions between grouped aerial predators (frontal discs of aircraft engines), either linearly arrayed or clustered, and flocks of small birds were studied using interactive computer simulation techniques. Each predator modelled was orders of magnitude larger than an individual prey, but the prey flock was larger than each predator. Expected numbers of individual prey captured from flocks were determined for various predator speeds and trajectories, flock–predator initial distances and angles, and flock sizes, shapes, densities, trajectories, and speeds. Generally, larger predators and clustered predators caught more prey. The simulation techniques employed in this study may also prove useful in studies of predator–prey interactions between schools or swarms of small aquatic prey species and their much larger vertebrate predators, such as mysticete cetaceans.The study also provides a method to study problems associated with turbine aircraft engine damage caused by the ingestion of small flocking birds, as well as net sampling of organisms in open aquatic environments.

A theoretical framework is developed to describe, in the limit of small but finite Re, the evolution of dilute clusters of sedimenting particles. Here, Re =aU/ν is the particle Reynolds number, where a is the radius of the spherical particle, U its settling velocity, and ν the kinematic viscosity of the suspending fluid. The theory assumes the disturbance velocity field at sufficiently large distances from a sedimenting particle, even at small Re, to possess the familiar source--sink character; that is, the momentum defect brought in via a narrow wake behind the particle is convected radially outwards in the remaining directions. It is then argued that for spherical clusters with sufficiently many particles, specifically with N much greater than O(R0U/ν), the initial evolution is strongly influenced by wake-mediated interactions; here, N is the total number of particles, and R0 is the initial cluster radius. As a result, the cluster first evolves into a nearly planar configuration with an asymptotically small aspect ratio of O(R0U/N ν), the plane of the cluster being perpendicular to the direction of gravity; subsequent expansion occurs with an unchanged aspect ratio. For relatively sparse clusters with N smaller than O(R0U/ν), the probability of wake interactions remains negligible, and the cluster expands while retaining its spherical shape. The long-time expansion in the former case, and that for all times in the latter case, is driven by disturbance velocity fields produced by the particles outside their wakes. The resulting interactions between particles are therefore mutually repulsive with forces that obey an inverse-square law. The analysis presented describes cluster evolution in this regime. A continuum representation is adopted with the clusters being characterized by a number density field (n(r, t)), and a corresponding induced velocity field (u (r, t)) arising on account of interactions. For both planar axisymmetric clusters and spherical clusters with radial symmetry, the evolution equation admits a similarity solution; either cluster expands self-similarly for long times. The number density profiles at different times are functions of a similarity variable η = (r/t1/3), r being the radial distance away from the cluster centre, and t the time. The radius of the expanding cluster is found to be of the form Rcl (t) = A (ν a)1/3N1/3t1/3, where the constant of proportionality, A, is determined from an analytical solution of the evolution equation; one finds A = 1.743 and 1.651 for planar and spherical clusters, respectively. The number density profile in a planar axisymmetric cluster is also obtained numerically as a solution of the initial value problem for a canonical (Gaussian) initial condition. The numerical results compare well with theoretical predictions, and demonstrate the asymptotic stability of the similarity solution in two dimensions for long times, at least for axisymmetric initial conditions.

A quasi-three-dimensional hydrodynamic model is presented to simulate shallow water phenomena. The method is based on a finite-volume approach designed to solve shallow water equations in the time domain. The nonlinearities of the governing equations are considered. The methodology can be used to compute green water effects on a variety of platforms with six-degrees-of-freedom motions. Different boundary and initial conditions can be applied for multiple types of moving platforms, like a ship's deck, tanks, etc. Comparisons with experimental data are discussed. The shallow water model has been integrated with the Large Amplitude Motions Program to compute the effects of green water flow over decks within a time-domain simulation of ship motions in waves. Results associated to this implementation are presented.
