The stringy description for the instabilities in the RR charged [Formula: see text] pairs is now well understood in terms of the open string tachyon condensation. The quantum interpretation presumably via the stringy description for the instabilities in the NSNS-charged [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] pairs in IIA/IIB theories, however, has not been fully established yet. This would be partly because of the absence (for the [Formula: see text] case) or our relatively poor understanding (for the [Formula: see text] case) of their world-volume (gauge theory) dynamics. In the present work, using the well-known quantum description for instabilities in the RR-charged [Formula: see text] systems and in the M-theory brane–antibrane systems and invoking appropriate string dualities, the stringy nature of the instabilities in the NSNS-charged [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] systems both at strong and at weak couplings has been uncovered. For the annihilations to string vacua, the quantum, stringy interpretations are simple extensions of Sen's conjecture for those in RR-charged brane–antibrane systems.

We investigate an effective torsion curvature in a second-order formalism underlying a two-form world-volume dynamics in a D5-brane. In particular, we consider the two form in presence of a background (open string) metric in a U(1) gauge theory. Interestingly the formalism may be viewed via a noncoincident pair of [Formula: see text]-brane with a global Nereu–Schwarz (NS) two form on an anti-brane and a local two form on a brane. The energy–momentum tensor is computed in the six-dimensional (6D) conformal field theory (CFT). It is shown to source a metric fluctuation on a vacuum created pair of [Formula: see text]-brane at a cosmological horizon by the two-form quanta in the gauge theory. The emergent gravity scenario is shown to describe a low-energy (perturbative) string vacuum in 6D with a nonperturbative (NP) quantum correction by a lower (p < 5) dimensional Dp-brane or an anti-brane in the formalism. A closed string exchange between a pair of [Formula: see text]-brane, underlying a closed/open string duality, is argued to describe the Einstein vacuum in a low-energy limit. We obtain topological de Sitter (TdS) and Schwarzschild brane universe in six dimensions. The brane/anti-brane geometries are analyzed to explore some of their characteristic and thermal behaviors in presence of the quantum effects. They reveal an underlying nine-dimensional type IIA and IIB superstring theories on S1.

Abstract A classical Ed(d)-invariant Hamiltonian formulation of world-volume theories of half-BPS p-branes in type IIb and eleven-dimensional supergravity is proposed, extending known results to d ≤ 6. It consists of a Hamiltonian, characterised by a generalised metric, and a current algebra constructed s.t. it reproduces the Ed(d) generalised Lie derivative. Ed(d)-covariance necessitates the introduction of so-called charges, specifying the type of p-brane and the choice of section. For p > 2, currents of p-branes are generically non- geometric due to the imposition of U-duality, e.g. the M5-currents contain coordinates associated to the M2-momentum.A derivation of the Ed(d)-invariant current algebra from a canonical Poisson structure is in general not possible. At most, one can derive a current algebra associated to para-Hermitian exceptional geometry.The membrane in the SL(5)-theory is studied in detail. It is shown that in a generalised frame the current algebra is twisted by the generalised fluxes. As a consistency check, the double dimensional reduction from membranes in M-theory to strings in type IIa string theory is performed. Many features generalise to p-branes in SL(p + 3) generalised geometries that form building blocks for the Ed(d)-invariant currents.

Abstract The boundary state corresponding to the Dp-brane with a transverse rotation in the presence of the Kalb–Ramond and tachyon background fields and a U(1) internal field will be constructed. We shall investigate effects of the open string tachyon condensation on this brane via its boundary state. We demonstrate that the background fields and transverse rotation cannot protect the brane against the collapse. Our calculations are in the context of the bosonic string theory.

A novel Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory of gravity in D = 15 based on an octicE8 invariant expression in D = 16 (recently constructed by Cederwall and Palmkvist) is developed. A grand unification model of gravity with the other forces is very plausible within the framework of a supersymmetric extension (to incorporate spacetime fermions) of this Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory. We review the construction showing why the ordinary 11D Chern–Simons gravity theory (based on the Anti de Sitter group) can be embedded into a Clifford-algebra valued gauge theory and that an E8 Yang–Mills field theory is a small sector of a Clifford (16) algebra gauge theory. An E8 gauge bundle formulation was instrumental in understanding the topological part of the 11-dim M-theory partition function. The nature of this 11-dim E8 gauge theory remains unknown. We hope that the Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory of gravity in D = 15 advanced in this work may shed some light into solving this problem after a dimensional reduction.

Abstract We construct the M-Theory lifts of type IIA orientifolds based on K3-fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds with compatible involutions. Such orientifolds are shown to lift to M-Theory on twisted connected sum G2 manifolds. Beautifully, the two building blocks forming the G2 manifold correspond to the open and closed string sectors. As an application, we show how to use such lifts to explicitly study open string moduli. Finally, we use our analysis to construct examples of G2 manifolds with different inequivalent TCS realizations.

We review in a pedagogical manner some of the efforts aimed at extending the gauge/gravity correspondence to nonconformal supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. After giving a general overview, we discuss in detail two specific examples: fractional D-branes on orbifolds and D-branes wrapped on supersymmetric cycles of Calabi–Yau spaces. We explore in particular which gauge theory information can be extracted from the corresponding supergravity solutions, and what the remaining open problems are. We also briefly explain the connection between these and other approaches, such as fractional branes on conifolds, branes suspended between branes, M5-branes on Riemann surfaces and M-theory on G2-holonomy manifolds, and discuss the role played by geometric transitions in all that.
