We examine to what extent several recently discovered narrow resonances can be interpreted as conventional [Formula: see text] bound states describable using a potential model. In doing so, we use a semirelativistic approach, which includes both the v2/c2 and QCD one-loop corrections to the short distance potential and a long range linear potential together with its scalar and vector v2/c2 spin-dependent terms.

The effect of the long-range confining potential on the two gluino bound states has been studied in a particular potential model. Some useful inequalities for the value of the wave function at the origin, [Formula: see text] have been derived for a more general class of potentials. The results will be useful for estimating various decay widths.

Abstract We propose a simple but unexplored model for the semiconductor band bending with the aim to obtain a relatively simple expression to calculate the energy spectrum for the confined levels and the analytical expressions for wave-functions. This model consists of a linear potential but it is bounded or trimmed in energy unlike the well known wedge potential model. We present exact solutions for this potential in the frame of the effective mass approximation and they are valid for electron or hole confinement potential. This model provides a more adequate physical scenario than the wedge potential since it takes into account the charge balance involved in the band bending potential. These results allow to treat confined potential problems as in the case of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a simplified way. We discuss the application of this approximation to the recombination time of electrons an holes and for the Franz-Keldysh effect.

Abstract Quantum mechanical systems with long-range interactions between quasiparticles provide a promising platform for coherent quantum information technology. Superconductors are a natural choice for solid-state based quantum devices, while magnetic impurities inside superconductors give rise to quasiparticle excitations of broken Cooper pairs that provide characteristic information about the host superconductor. Here, we reveal that magnetic impurities embedded below a superconducting La(0001) surface interact via quasiparticles extending to very large distances, up to several tens of nanometers. Using low-temperature scanning probe techniques, we observe the corresponding anisotropic and giant oscillations in the LDOS. Theoretical calculations indicate that the quasi-two-dimensional surface states with their strongly anisotropic Fermi surface play a crucial role for the focusing and long-range extension of the magnetic bound states. The quasiparticle focusing mechanism should facilitate the design of versatile magnetic structures with tunable and directed magnetic interactions over large distances, thereby paving the way toward the design of low-dimensional magnet–superconductor hybrid systems exhibiting topologically non-trivial quantum states as possible elements of quantum computation schemes based on Majorana quasiparticles.

A scattering process can be a natural process or a process carried out in a laboratory. The scattering of particles from targets has resulted in important discoveries in physics. We discuss various scattering theories of electrons and positrons and their applications to elastic scattering, resonances, photoabsorption, excitation, and solar and stellar atmospheres. Among the most commonly employed approaches are the Kohn variational principle, close-coupling approximation, method of polarized orbitals, R-matrix formulation, and hybrid theory. In every formulation, an attempt is made to include exchange, long-range and short-range correlations, and to make the approach variationally correct. The present formulation, namely, hybrid theory, which is discussed in greater detail compared to other approximations, includes exchange, long-range correlations, and short-range correlations at the same time, and is variationally correct. It was applied to calculate the phase shifts for elastic scattering, the resonance parameters of two-electron systems, photoabsorption in two-electron systems, excitation of atomic hydrogen by an electron and positron impact, and to study the opacity of the Sun’s atmosphere. Calculations of polarizabilities, Rydberg states, and bound states of atoms are also discussed.
