Bipodal ligand 5,15-bis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (H[Formula: see text]DCPP) was designed and synthesized. By adjusting the molar ratio of H[Formula: see text]DCPP, ancillary ligand 4,4-bipyridine (bpy) and zinc acetate salts, three novel coordination assemblies, namely, zero-dimensional dimeric [Zn[Formula: see text](H[Formula: see text]DCPP)[Formula: see text] ·bpy] ·4H[Formula: see text]O ·4DMF (Zn-D), two-dimensional polymeric {[Zn[Formula: see text](DCPP) ·bpy[Formula: see text] ·H[Formula: see text]O ·DMF[Formula: see text]] ·solvent}[Formula: see text] (Zn-2D), and three-dimensional polymeric [Zn[Formula: see text](DCPP) ·bpy[Formula: see text]][Formula: see text] (Zn-3D) were assembled. Due to the delicate integration of multiple chromophores in the coordination space combining bpy, DCPP and MLCT emissions together, photoluminescence (PL) of the three porphyrin-zinc coordination assemblies differ from each other and color tone is tunable from blue to orange with changes of the excitation wavelength. In particular, white light emission (WLE) can be observed by the excitation of 270 to 290 nm, representing the first examples of single component WLE compounds based on porphyrin ligands. Furthermore, temperature-dependent luminescence results in a linear [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] relationship in Zn-2D and Zn-3D assemblies, applicable for long wavelength red-emitting thermometers.

Clusteroluminogens (CLgens) refer to some non-conjugated molecules that show visible light due to the formation of aggregates and unique electronic properties with through-space interactions (TSI). Although mature and systematic theories of molecular photophysics have been developed to study conventional conjugated chromophores, it is still challenging to endow CLgens with designed photophysical properties by manipulating TSI. Herein, three CLgens with non-conjugated donor-acceptor structures and different halide substituents with secondary TSI are designed and synthesized. These molecules show multiple emissions and even white-light emission in the crystalline state and the intensity ratio of these multiple emission peaks is easily manipulated by changing the halide atom and excitation wavelength. Experimental and theoretical results successfully disclose the electronic nature of these multiple emissions: through-space conjugation for short-wavelength fluorescence, through-space charge transfer based on secondary TSI for long-wavelength fluorescence, and room-temperature phosphorescence. The introduction of secondary TSI to CLgens not only enriches their varieties of photophysical properties but also inspires the establishment of novel aggregate photophysics for clusteroluminescence.

Semiconductor nanocrystals are promising for display and lighting devices. Herein, we report a facile one-pot synthetic route to fabricate white light emitting CdSexSy nanocrystals with enhanced quantum yield using CdO, S powder, and Se powder as precursors. The phosphine-free route was adopted, employing paraffin oil as the reducing agent and solvent for the fabrication. The optical properties can be effectively tailored by controlling the reaction time and the molar ratio of Se/S. The emission of pristine CdSexSy nanocrystals covered a broad visible range from 400 to 750 nm. The CdSexSy nanocrystals (Se/S = 0.4) exhibited white-light emission with quantum yield of 50 ± 3 % and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates of (0.30, 0.31). The band-edge (~400-450 nm) to trap-state (~550-750 nm) emissions was tuned by controlling the Se/S ratio, and the different shades of white light were obtained. Furthermore, the quantum yield and CIE coordinates of the CdSexSy nanocrystals (Se/S = 0.4) were found to be similar even after 30 days of fabrication, showing the high stability of nanocrystals. The white light emission was retained in nanocrystals-embedded poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin film and also in the hydrogel matrix. The one-pot, low-cost, scalable fabrication of white light emitting CdSexSy nanocrystals demonstrated in the present study offers promising scope in the solid-state display applications. <br>
