At RFNC-VNIIEF on the basis of a “Gamma-1” high-current pulsed accelerator there is being developed a four-module “Gamma-4” electrophysical facility. A synchronization system of the "Gamma-4" facility is meant for a simultaneous (with precision not worse than ±3 ns) triggering of high-volt gas-filled trigatron type switches of modules' pulse forming systems (144 items, operating voltage ≤ 1 MV), modules' pre-pulse switches (24 items, ≤ 3 MV) and 8 Marx generators (40 items, ≤ 100 kV). The synchronization system comprises 54 pulse generators, involving 25 generators on the basis of water insulated forming lines with distributed parameters and multi-channel gas-filled switches. On matched cable loads with resistances 0.45 Ohm these generators form voltage pulses with amplitudes 100 kV with durations 25 ns. A jitter of switches of these generators does not exceed ± 2 ns. To raise the amplitude of pulse drivers of pulse forming system switches and pre-pulse switches of modules in the facility synchronization system there are used step-up transformers based on pulsed high-voltage cables.

The pulse generators were developed to trigger the high-voltage dischargers of magnetic systems and the dischargers of the generators of pulsed voltages used by the relativistic electron beam (REB) accelerator “TEMP-B”. The description of the triggering pulse generators designed by the NSC KIPT to actuate the dischargers of the pulsed voltage generators (PVG) and the dischargers of magnetic systems has been given. These are used by the commutation systems of capacitor banks with the stored energy margin in the range of 60 to 150 kJ. The generators provide the generation of voltage pulses with the amplitude of up to 20 kV.

This article describes the principles of operation and the parameters of the SINUS setups designed at the Institute of High-Current Electronics, Siberian Division, Russian Academy of Science, over the period from 1990 to 2002. A characteristic feature of accelerators of the SINUS type is the use of coaxial forming lines (in particular, with a spiral central conductor) which are charged by a built-in Tesla transformer to produce the accelerating high-voltage pulses. This ensures a reasonable compactness and long lifetime of the setups.

The influence of the periodicity of diagnostic measurements on the operational state of high-voltage transformers is considered. Examples of defects of switching devices of converter transformers and methods for their detection are given. The rationale for the importance of recognition of defects at an early stage of their occurrence is given. The influence of the multiplicity of overvoltages on the service life of converter transformers in the aluminum industry is investigated. Based on the analysis of the service life of converter transformers of one of the powerful aluminum plants, where 83% of converter transformers have exhausted their standard service life, it is shown that in 40% of cases it would be possible to avoid their failures, with timely detection and elimination of emerging defects. Examples of defects of OLR (on-load regulators) of converter transformers and methods for their detection are given. The importance of recognition of defects at an early stage of their occurrence is substantiated. A method for chromatographic analysis of dissolved gases in transformer oil has been developed for the qualitative determination of defects and ways to eliminate them. Examples of diagnostics of converter transformers at operating voltage and working load are given, providing the best quality operational characteristics of converter transformers. The periodicity of diagnostic measurements and the reduction of defects and failures has been substantiated. The question of diagnosing the state of the converter transformer TDNP-40000/10 at an enterprise of the aluminum industry is investigated. Currently, diagnostic methods are being developed based on chromatographic analysis of dissolved gases in transformer oil. The presented method of evaluating the operating parameters of transformers allows for the safe operation of high-voltage transformers and enables to increase the reliability of the power supply scheme of aluminum industry plants.

Chemical sources of current are investigated as lines with distributed parameters. Analytical expressions are obtained for the voltage and active power values of the source at different distances from the beginning of the cell as well as dependences of the working voltage and active power on the source length. Effects of a reduction in the operating voltage and active power are due to the flow of electric current along the source during operation. The magnitude of these effects depends not only on the length of the source, but also on the ratio of characteristic resistance to the load resistance.<br>
