In NW Turkey, the medium-grade Kemer micaschists of the Biga Peninsula record NE-directed extension related to ductile to brittle–ductile shearing during the Palaeogene period: a lower limit for their exhumation is given by the Late Maastrichtian age of the HP–LT metamorphism of a similar nearby area (Çamlıca micaschists); an upper limit is given by the Early Eocene intrusion age of the post-kinematic Karabiga granitoid, dated as 52.7 ± 1.9 Ma using the U–Pb LA–ICP–MS method on xenotime. Correlations with the northeasterly Rhodope region and integration into the geodynamic regional frame indicate that the Kemer micaschists experienced an extensional deformation connected to a collisional context in latest Cretaceous–early Tertiary times. The Kemer micaschists therefore represent a new area (the first in Turkey), which suffered synorogenic extension in the north Aegean domain at the very beginning of Tertiary times.

A Prospective Study

One of the biggest challenges of our time is climate change. Every day, at different places of the world, the planet sends alarming messages about the enormous transformations it is experiencing due to human-based activities. The latter are responsible for changing weather patterns that threaten food production, energy production and energy consumption, the desertification of land, the displacement of people and animals because of food and water shortages due to the reductions in rainfall, natural disasters and rising sea levels. The effects of climate change affect us all, and if drastic measures are not considered in a timely manner, it will be more difficult and costly to adapt to the aforementioned effects in the future. Considering this context, the aim of this work is to implement a prospective study/structural analysis to the identified sectors of a regional plan of adaptation to climate change so as to promote the resilience of the region against the negative phenomena generated by the climate crisis. This was achieved in two steps: first, we identified the relationships between the strategic sectors of the plan and organized them in order of importance. Second, we assessed the effectiveness of several public policies oriented towards a city’s resilience according to their impact upon the strategic sectors of the plan and the co-benefits generated by their implementation for society. The results highlight that the most essential sectors for the mitigation of climate change are flood risk management, built environment, forest ecosystem management, human health, tourism and rise in sea level. As a consequence, the most important measures for the resilience of the North Aegean Region against climate change are the ones related to the preparation of strategic master plans for flood protection projects.

AbstractThe Biga Peninsula of NW Turkey is host to six major halloysite deposits in the Go¨nen, Yenice and Balya districts. Mineralization took place in areas of Permian limestone blocks where the Triassic Karakaya Complex is in contact with early Miocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks. Hypogene halloysite mineralization was controlled by the intersection of minor faults in the vicinity of clay deposits. During the Pleistocene, activity of the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) brought ascending geothermal solutions through the fault zones to the surface, which led to hydrothermal alteration and halloysite formation. N-MORB normalized element values for each halloysite deposit and the volcanic rocks suggest genetic links. Alunite and halloysite were formed in the Turplu area where upwelling hydrothermal waters contained major H2S and SO2acids. Only halloysite mineralization occurred in outflow areas of the same fossil geothermal field.Pyrite and alunite samples from the Turplu deposits have δ34S values of 0.6–1.8% and 4.8–7.9%, respectively, with values for gypsum of 3.1–3.5%. The δ34S values of pyrite suggest that local meteoric waters had partially mixed with the dominant fluid during the closure stage of fossil hydrothermal activities. The range of δD values of halloysite samples from Turplu is –58.4 to –68.6%. The δ18O values for halloysite are in the range 16.7–18.1%. All halloysite deposits in the study areas are either overlying or adjacent to limestone blocks, and these provide excellent drainage for the discharging geothermal waters. Subsurface drainage systems in the karstic environment and the SO2-bearing thermal waters indicate the importance of acidic waters and the continuous leaching of elements in forming relatively pure hydrated halloysite. A steam-heated dissolution-precipitation model is proposed for the occurrence of all halloysite and alunite deposits. Sulphur gases (H2S-SO2) of hypogene origin rose from deep in the fault zone to the surface where they encountered oxygenated groundwater at the water table. The occurrence of H2SO4in this hydrothermal system enhanced the acidity of geothermal waters provoking advanced argillic alteration. Hypogene alunite deposits also have large P2O5contents, suggesting a parent material with a magmatic origin deeper than the alkaline tuffs. Halloysite is a fast-forming metastable precursor to kaolinite.

As the tourism sector is continually evolving, touristic destinations and service providers should give close and thoughtful attention to customers’ satisfaction, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic period. Tourism for Greece represents one of the most valuable pillars of the economy and the impact of the pandemic to the sector and GDP will be significant. In this era, it is evident the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals and effective Destination Management that will take into consideration all aspects of the local communities. Customer satisfaction is crucial to improving strategies that destinations must follow to service quality and satisfaction management strategies. Recent consumer and technological trends make customer satisfaction more important than ever. This paper aims to investigate the characteristics, preferences, images, satisfaction levels, and the overall experience gained by the tourists visiting Lesvos island in the North Aegean Region Greece. Primary research was conducted and the airport of the island during departure in 2019. The useful gathered questionnaires (201) provided helpful information to the island’s DMO related to the visitors’ demographic characteristics, destination perception, awareness and competitiveness, satisfaction and overall experience. The basic research findings were the strong impression of the visitors about the authenticity of the destination. They also believe that prices are excellent and the rate of value for money is high. At the same time, visitors think that the island is not promoted very good and the image/brand of the island is not very clear and well defined. It is the first research conducted to visitors departing from Lesvos island to the authors’ best knowledge. The results and discussion of this study will be useful to the islands’ DMO and the island’s tourism authorities and the North Aegean Region and other similar island destinations, which wish to maximize the benefits of tourism development. Η σωματιδιακή ρύπανση αποτελεί μείζον περιβαλλοντικό πρόβλημα στις αστικές και απομακρυσμένες περιοχές, προκαλώντας δυσμενείς επιπτώσεις στην ανθρώπινη υγεία και επιδρώντας άμεσα ή έμμεσα στην κλιματική αλλαγή. Τα αιωρούμενα σωματίδια (ΑΣ) μπορεί να ποικίλουν σημαντικά στο μέγεθος, στη χημική σύσταση και την προέλευση τους. Ως εκ τούτου, πολυάριθμες επιστημονικές μελέτες έχουν διερευνήσει την έκθεση σε σωματιδιακή ρύπανση και τις επιπτώσεις της παγκόσμια, περιλαμβάνοντας την περιοχή της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου. Η συγκεκριμένη περιοχή θεωρείται μεγάλου ενδιαφέροντος σχετικά με την κλιματική αλλαγή, καθώς επηρεάζεται έντονα από τη μεταφορά ατμοσφαιρικών ρύπων από την Ευρώπη, την Αφρική και την Ασία. Παρά τα ευρήματα αυτά, υπάρχουν ακόμη ελλιπείς πληροφορίες σχετικά με την ποιότητα του αέρα στις νησιωτικές παράκτιες περιοχές στο βόρειο τμήμα της περιοχής της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου, δηλαδή στο Βόρειο Αιγαίο (ΒΑ), και της συμβολής των τοπικών και των μακρινών πηγών που την επηρεάζουν.Σκοπός της παρούσας διατριβής είναι η εκτίμηση των φυσικοχημικών ιδιοτήτων των ΑΣ σε αστικές και προαστιακές περιοχές του ΒΑ καθώς και η σύγκρισή τους με άλλες περιοχές της Βορειοανατολικής Μεσογείου. Αρχικά η διατριβή παρέχει πληροφορίες για τα επίπεδα συγκέντρωσης των ΑΣ10 στα δύο μεγάλα αστικά κέντρα της Ελλάδας, συγκεκριμένα την Αθήνα και τη Θεσσαλονίκη κατά την περίοδο 2001 έως 2010. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν ότι οι περισσότεροι σταθμοί στα δύο μεγάλα αστικά κέντρα στην Ελλάδα, παρουσιάζουν υψηλές συγκεντρώσεις ΑΣ10 και υπερβαίνουν τα ετήσια και 24ωρα όρια της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (ΕΕ) κατά τη διάρκεια της ερευνητικής περιόδου, αν και ήταν χαμηλότερες συγκριτικά με άλλες ευρωπαϊκές και αμερικανικές πόλεις του ίδιου μεγέθους. Με εξαίρεση τρεις προαστιακούς σταθμούς στην Αθήνα και έναν σταθμό στη Θεσσαλονίκη, όλοι οι άλλοι παρουσίασαν τις υψηλότερες και τις χαμηλότερες μηνιαίες μέσες συγκεντρώσεις ΑΣ10 κατά τη διάρκεια του φθινοπώρου/χειμώνα και των θερινών μηνών, αντίστοιχα. Για τους προαστιακούς σταθμούς στην Αθήνα, οι υψηλότερες τιμές παρατηρούνται κατά την άνοιξη και οι χαμηλότερες κατά τη διάρκεια του χειμώνα, ενώ ένας σταθμός στη Θεσσαλονίκη δεν παρουσίασε εποχικότητα λόγω της εγγύτητάς του σε βιομηχανική ζώνη.Δεύτερον, η διατριβή αναφέρεται σε μετρήσεις ΑΣ σε απομακρυσμένες και αστικές περιοχές στην περιοχή του ΒΑ. Μετρήσεις αιωρούμενων σωματιδίων διενεργήθηκαν στην απομακρυσμένη περιοχή του ΒΑ υπό συνοπτικές μετεωρολογικές συνθήκες την θερινή περίοδο (δηλ. κατά την περίοδο των Ετησίων ανέμων). Οι μετρήσεις έδειξαν ότι η μεταφορά των ατμοσφαιρικών ρύπων σε μεγάλη απόσταση από βιομηχανικές και αστικές περιοχές, μπορεί επίσης να επηρεάσει σημαντικά την ποιότητα του αέρα σε απομακρυσμένες περιοχές. Όταν επικρατούν ισχυροί βορειοανατολικοί άνεμοι, οι αέριες μάζες περνούν πάνω από την ευρύτερη περιοχή της Κωνσταντινούπολης. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα την μετατόπιση των υψηλότερων τιμών των σωματιδίων σε μικρότερα μεγέθη (δηλ. από 100 σε 20 nm), ενώ παρατηρείται αύξηση έως έξι φορές της αριθμητικής συγκέντρωσης, καθώς και υψηλοί ρυθμοί αύξησης του μεγέθους των σωματιδίων (περίπου 9.0 nm h-1). Μια επιπλέον ένδειξη ότι τα σωματίδια που παρατηρούνται στην περιοχή του ΒΑ σχετίζονται με μεταφερόμενη ρύπανση σε μεγάλη απόσταση από αστικές ή/και βιομηχανικές περιοχές αποτελούν οι αυξημένες τιμές των θειϊκών και νιτρικών, καθώς και της αναλογίας οργανικού προς στοιχειακό άνθρακα κατά τη διάρκεια των ημερών μεταφοράς των ατμοσφαιρικών ρύπων σε σύγκριση με την υπόλοιπη περίοδο δειγματοληψίας.Επιπλέον, τα χαρακτηριστικά των αιωρούμενων σωματιδίων και των δυνητικών πηγών τους ερευνήθηκαν σε έναν αστικό σταθμό δειγματοληψίας στην περιοχή του ΒΑ κατά τη θερινή και χειμερινή περίοδο. Οι μέσες συγκεντρώσεις ΑΣ2.0 και ΑΣ1.0 στο κέντρο της πόλης ήταν χαμηλότερες των αντίστοιχων τιμών που καταγράφηκαν σε μεγάλες πόλεις της περιοχής (δηλ. στην Αθήνα και στη Θεσσαλονίκη). Υψηλότερες μέσες τιμές τόσο για την συγκέντρωση μάζας όσο και για την αριθμητική συγκέντρωση παρατηρήθηκαν το χειμώνα σε σύγκριση με αυτές του καλοκαιριού, λόγω των πρόσθετων εκπομπών οικιακής θέρμανσης και της ασθενέστερης ατμοσφαιρικής αραίωσης. Ωστόσο, και στις δύο εποχές, οι εκπομπές των ΑΣ σχετίζονται με τοπικές φυσικές και ανθρωπογενείς πηγές. Η στοιχειακή ανάλυση σε δείγματα που συλλέχθησαν κατά την διάρκεια των μετρήσεων έδειξαν επίσης ότι οι φυσικές πηγές όπως το θαλάσσιο αλάτι και η επαναιώρηση της σκόνης συμβάλλουν στο φορτίο των σωματιδίων στην ατμόσφαιρα της πόλης. Από τις πηγές κυκλοφοριακής κίνησης που δεν σχετίζονται με τα καυσαέρια βρέθηκαν επίσης σημαντικές συνεισφορές, ενώ ισχυρή συμβολή των τοπικών πηγών κίνησης εντοπίστηκε επίσης και από τις αυξημένες αριθμητικές συγκεντρώσεις των σωματιδίων της περιοχής ‘Aitken’ κατά τις ώρες αιχμής. Εκτός από τις τοπικές πηγές, η μεταφερόμενη ρύπανση σε μεγάλη απόσταση, κυρίως από τη Βορειοανατολική Τουρκία, εμπλούτισε τα συλλεγέντα δείγματα σωματιδίων με στοιχεία εδαφικής και ανθρωπογενούς προέλευσης (δηλ. K, Ca, Ti, Mg, Fe, As, S), συμβάλλοντας στην υποβάθμιση της ποιότητας του ατμοσφαιρικού αέρα στην περιοχή του ΒΑ. Τέλος, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη την επίδραση παραγόντων όπως οι μετεωρολογικές συνθήκες και το υλικό του φίλτρου στις μετρήσεις ΑΣ, επιχειρήθηκε να εκτιμηθεί η απόκλιση μεταξύ της μεθόδου απορρόφησης Β-ακτινοβολίας (ΒΑM) και της σταθμικής μεθόδου (gravimetric; GM) μετρήσεων ΑΣ σε ένα προαστιακό-υποβάθρου σταθμό στη περιοχή μελέτης. Παρατηρήθηκε υπερεκτίμηση των μετρήσεων ΒΑM, η οποία ήταν ~ 30% για τα ΑΣ2.5 και ~ 10% για τα ΑΣ10. Οι διαφορές μεταξύ των μετρήσεων BAM και GM στα ΑΣ2.5 αυξήθηκαν με: α) την αύξηση των πιθανών υδρατμών, γεγονός που υποδηλώνει ότι το δεσμευμένο νερό στα αεροζόλ έχει ισχυρή επίδραση στις μετρήσεις, β) την χρήση εξαιρετικά υδρόφοβων φίλτρων Teflon για την μέθοδο GM όταν η ατμοσφαιρική πίεση υδρατμών αυξάνεται, και γ) την πιθανή πτητικότητα ή σταθερότητα στη σωματιδιακή φάση ειδών όπως το νιτρικό αμμώνιο. Καλύτερη συσχέτιση μεταξύ των μετρήσεων με τις μεθόδους GM και BAM παρατηρήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια της χειμερινής αντί της θερινής περιόδου και όταν τα δείγματα της GM μεθόδου συλλέχθηκαν σε φίλτρα κατασκευασμένα από ίνες υάλου, δηλαδή το ίδιο υλικό με αυτό της ταινίας διηθήσεως στην μέθοδο ΒΑM. Αυτή η μελέτη στοχεύει στην καλύτερη ερμηνεία των μετρήσεων των ΑΣ που διεξάγονται με διάφορους ελεγκτές εκπομπών μεθόδου απορρόφησης Β-ακτινοβολίας.
