We investigated 563 German–English nouns for the purposes of identifying cognates, false cognates and non-cognates. Two techniques for identifying cognates were used and compared: (i) De Groot and Nas's (1991) similarity-rating technique and (ii) a translation-elicitation task similar to that of Kroll and Stewart (1994). The results obtained with English-speaking participants produced 112 cognates, 94 false cognates, and 357 non cognates and indicated that the two techniques yielded similar findings. Rated similarity of German–English translation pairs and translation accuracy were positively correlated. We also investigated whether the presence of German-specific characters and the availability of German pronunciation information influenced similarity ratings and translation accuracy. Ratings for translation pairs in which the German word contained a language-specific character were lower and the word was translated less accurately. Participants provided with pronunciation information rated German–English translation pairs as being more similar and translated German words correctly more often than participants who did not receive pronunciation information. We also report the relationships among word frequency, rated imageability and the performance measures. The resulting database of information is intended to be a resource for researchers interested in cognitive processing in German–English bilinguals.

In the process of English translation, traditional interactive English translation system is not obvious in English semantic context. The optimal feature selection process does not achieve the optimal translation solution, and the translation accuracy is low. Based on this, this paper designs an interactive English Chinese translation system based on a feature extraction algorithm. By introducing the feature extraction algorithm, the optimal translation solution is selected, and the semantic mapping model is constructed to translate the best translation into English Chinese translation. The real experiment results show that the interactive English Chinese translation system based on feature extraction algorithm can get the best solution.

Many ironic, cynical, and sarcastic expressions are found in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk trilogy. Because of the differences of situational context and cultural background, it is not easy for the target readers to grab the information and mission or messages delivered by Ahmad Tohari in the source text. Some techniques might be chosen by the translator. The accuracy, acceptability or naturalness, and readability of the ironic, cynical, and sarcastic expressions should also be considered. The aims of the study were first to identify the translation techniques of ironic, cynical, and sarcastic expression in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk trilogy from Indonesian into English, and the second, to explore the translation accuracy, acceptability, and readability of translating ironic, cynical, and sarcastic expression in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk trilogy from Indonesian into English. The object of this study was Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk trilogy written by Ahmad Tohari translated by Rene T.A. Lysloff. This study employed embedded research design. It combined or integrated qualitative and quantitative data. The data analysis was deductively built from particular to general. The result of the translation techniques analysis shows that the most dominant translation techniques are established equivalent, reduction, and modulation. Based on the analysis, it reveals that the translation quality of ironic expression translation possesses the highest score compared with cynic and sarcastic expressions translation. It can be concluded that translation techniques influence the translation quality. It might be suggested for the future researchers to investigate how translation technique influences the translation quality.

This research dwells upon prominent Russian writer Alexander Pushkin’s poetry in light of translation. More specifically, one of Pushkin’s most famous poems – “Winter Evening” has been selected to be analyzed with regard to its translation in Armenian and English. This study aims to reveal the major challenges that the translators have faced while rendering the poem from Russian into Armenian and English as well as to disclose the discrepancies that exist between the original and the translated texts. Also, an attempt will be made to identify the major lexical, grammatical, stylistic and syntactic shifts that have occurred in the translation process in order to assess the degree of translation accuracy and pinpoint whether or not the translated texts impact the target-language readers to the same extent as the original.

Neural machine translation has been widely concerned in recent years. The traditional sequential neural network framework of English translation has obvious disadvantages because of its poor ability to capture long-distance information, and the current improved framework, such as the recurrent neural network, still cannot solve this problem very well. In this paper, we propose a hybrid neural network that combines the convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) and introduce the attention mechanism based on the encoder-decoder structure to improve the translation accuracy, especially for long sentences. In the experiment, this model is implemented based on TensorFlow, and the results show that the BLEU value of the proposed method is obviously improved compared with the traditional machine learning model, which proves the effectiveness of our method in English-Chinese translation.
